Today James reviews Robocop. The movie takes place in a violent, near-apocalyptic Detroit. An evil corporation Omni Consumer Products wins a contract from the city government to privatize the police force. To test their crime-eradicating cyborgs, the company leads street cop Alex Murphy (Peter Weller) into an armed confrontation with crime lord Boddicker (Kurtwood Smith) so they can use his body to support their untested RoboCop prototype. But when RoboCop learns of the company's nefarious plans, he turns on his masters.

One very small but important correction: Murphy wasn't a new recruit. He worked the Metro South precinct before being transferred to the much more dangerous Metro West. The transfer was done under the guise of OCP "restructuring" the Detroit PD, but the real reason was that Murphy's service record and psychological profile made him a prime candidate for the Robocop program. By transferring him to Metreo West, OCP increased the odds that he'd be killed in the line of duty and thus be of use to them. It's alluded to in the film, but it's only a couple of lines if I'm remembering correctly.

He isn't supposed to be a superhero at all. At least that's not what Verhoeven and the writers intended I don't think. It's a story about a man trying to find his humanity again after losing it to a rotten crime-riddled society and corporate greed.

One of my favorite movies ever. So many quotable lines. Great action scenes and amazing soundtrack. I feel bad for anyone who didn't see this when it was relatively new. It was mind blowing back then.

One of the greatest films ever made.
The remake is garbage. Void of every thing that made the original special. It was clear they were trying to make something more in line with Marvel or Batman rather than honor the 1987 classic.

To be honest I thought the remake was okay, the problem is the the original was TOO EPIC, it’s truly hard for any director to beat or even come close to it, another thing is that as time goes we seem to live in a softer society that wouldn’t allow for such raw movie like it did in the 80s

I do agree! But as hard as it is for me to admit liking anything about it... the scene where they disassemble him was prob the only thing I liked about it.

The corniness of the original just aged really well. Superhero movies just have to embrace their special status and power fantasies.

My mom worked part time at the movie theater while she was in the police academy. When this movie came out I was obsessed with it. She surprised me one day and brought me home the actual movie poster from the theater she worked at and the standee. Wish I still had them.

In the not too distant future, a large percentage of the human population will opt to become cyborgs to increase their life-span or replace old or broken parts(limbs, and even organs can be replaced by mechanical and computerised parts)...or just to augment their strength & their senses(electro/hydraulic arms & legs, optical implants, miracle ears, etc)

    • @PredatoryQQmber

You should be mad about yourself then because synthetic organism is still an organism. Word "cyber" only means that it's a complex autonomous system and "organism" means entity that is a subject, capable of acting on its own initiative over objects, rather than an object.

@@deezy81 Yes, and yes (about electrical parts). By a strict current (2020) definition of the term. But it will probably be called something else once medical science gets better and more and more of a human can be replaced. Terms in science update with the science itself.
Kind of like the term "computer" meant something radically different before the 70s (EG: a human that use calculus).
