    It looks stunning. I have the BB58 but I'm really tempted to get the 54 as well. There are definitely enough differences between the two. I also tend to agree with those that believe the 54 looks more refined than the 58.

    This is my opinion for this very cool subject:
    I have a family heirloom Rolex 6538 but will never wear it in the wild. As a matter of fact it is in a safe in a vault. I bought 5-digit sub back in 05-06 and still love it to this day and will always be in my rotation, but I also wanted to wear something vintage but there was nothing out there until the first Blackbay back in I guess 2010s some time. In hopes it would feel like the 6538, I found it was not and did not wear like it. 2018 comes around and the BB58 arrives.
    The BB58 wears almost exactly the same as a Rolex 6538. The BB58 is 39mm x 11.9mm in height x 47mm lug to lug and a lug width of 20mm. The crown is 6-6.5mm. The Rolex 6538 is 38mm x 15.2mm in height due to the doomed x 47mm lug to lug and a lug width of 20mm. The crown is I believe 8mm last I checked.
    I tried the BB54 and it was an awesome watch! Love the fit and feel but also did not fit like a 6538 at all which makes sense because it is a nod to an older vintage but even then it is it’s own thing as the vintage it is based off from 1954 it is based off is larger lug to lug and thickness. So the BB54 does not wear like a vintage but it wears very different in a good way. For me I wanted something like the 6538 and the BB58 is my preferred. Specifically, the Gilt dial. Lastly the lume on the BB54 is not as good as the BB58.
    I think depending on which vintage you like most would determine which you prefer. Another option is simply owning both the BB58 and 54. For me I am waiting for 2028. I have a feeling they will make some refinements with the original BB58. They will make changes with the gnarling on the bezel and crown and may shrink it down to 38mm. Now that is a watch worth waiting for in my opinion. But no one would be wrong to own that nice BB54.

    I have the BB58 and love it. I’m sure the 37mm watch on rubber is super comfortable, but the BB58 in 39mm is just a great size to display that beautiful dial, and very comfortable too. I switch from my Sub when I want a more casual wear(and no, they don’t really compare apples to apples). Nonetheless, a great watch on its own merit.

    Before watches and wonders I was going to the Tudor boutique on a weekly basis and complaining about how I just wanted a 6204 that I could wear at all times. I had them set a bb58 black aside for me and was about to pull the trigger when I thought that maybe I should wait for watches and wonders just in case, and low and behold

  • @SlimWhittman

    I bought a new BB58 in blue last year and was very disappointed with the mass on my wrist. It is extremely thick and wore like a Rolex Deep Sea. I sold it after 3-4 times of wear for a considerable loss and bought a new no date Submariner as a replacement. The sub is a perfect watch. I also have a 2006 Daytona, 2023 rose gold date just on oyster and an identical datejust on jubilee. Of these the sub is the watch I pull from the case most often because it is the most satisfying to wear.

    Your review was great, as usual. I love the secret measurement part. This is a great release, but I tried on the rubber strap version (super comfy) and it ended up looking like a toy in the distance shots (full length mirror). It does wear bigger than one might think for 37mm, but it was still ultimately too small. I do think it was a bit small on your wrist in the distance shot, but not massively as on mine. My favorite of the more compact Tudors is the Pelagos 39, which I feel gives that vintage (39mm vintage, not early '50s vintage) Sub feel. Having tried on a vintage Sub, it felt eerily similar, with a much better build quality, naturally. I'm not afraid of smaller watches. I did just pick up a used SPB159 Alpinist on Seiko bracelet (like the bracelet on the SPB155), and at 38mm that is great on my wrist, even in the distance shots. That's about as small as I tend to want to go though.
    I was able to try on a lot of 36mm watches at the recent Chicago Windup Watch Fair. While the CW C63 36mm wore bigger than expected due to the bracelet and the Nodus Unity 36.5mm looked bigger than expected, it wasn't quite there for me. Both were very nice watches by the way. For average or smaller people, those may work great on wrist.

    • @EscapementWatch
      @EscapementWatch  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      the secret measurement was wrong in the video it is actually 29mm even. Anyways, that is all just personal preference, but I think it looks perfect on my wrist from far. BTW my wrist size is now 6.65inch. It grew as I just check recently. Been working out alot! Soon I will be able to wear my dream the Seiko turtle!

    • @RedwoodAggie
      @RedwoodAggie ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@EscapementWatch Ah, that makes sense on the secret measurement. I checked my new Alpinist and it was barely bigger than the one in this video. That was surprising due to the smaller size and the dive bezel. 29 makes more sense. That's cool that your wrist size went up. I lost just a little bit of weight and mine went from 7.25 to 7 inches! I was shocked as my wrist looks skinny anyway.

  • @porscheoscar
    @porscheoscar ปีที่แล้ว +3

    $3600 is steep for a not really inouse movement. At that price COSC is a must for a simple 3 hand movement. Meanwhile the Longines Zulu Time is a more complicated, a true GMT that ALSO meets COSC for only $3k. Longines as a brand has an extra 150 years on Tudor, and that's heritage as one of the few brands that were building their own Chronographs including the famous flyback. Seems the more of this around rhe clock attention Tudor gets the more I realize how Rolex got so big with such a scant history of innovation. They knew how to maximize marketing and media to the limit.
    What bugs me about this homage to a vintage watch in particular is that because Rolex calls the shots all Black Bay models can ONLY have snow flake hands and they cant use Mercedes hands nor the Submariner name despite both of these things being a long standing part of Tudor history. That seems like a forced hierarchy to upsell to Rolex Submariners at a wildly inflated premium now. You used to be able to buy Rolex Submariners (even adjusting for inflation) for what you can only get a Tudor for now. Yet is Rolex delivering a five times better 3 hand diver over the 54? Not remotely the case.
    Btw, in my opinion the best value proposition between Rolex and Tudor is the Black Bay chronograph. Its a bit more money than the 3 hand BBs but at least your getting a more complicated movement on a panda dial which is timeless.
    Rolex prices are just beyond absurd for a brand that doesn't make a grand complication and has no heritage as an inhouse movement maker. But you cant argue with the masses. I just hope they dont start looking at Grand Seiko HiBeat GMT, Longines Heritage tuxedo Chrono and Zenith Pilot Auto and drive their prices up.

    It is perfect - design, size, tech, materials..but..it is just toо pretty to be dipped in either Sea or pool. A great diver/beater but for millionaires. I'd be happy enough with a Baltic Aquascaphe.

    Your wrist looks bigger than 6.5 inches. Is that accurate?

    • @EscapementWatch
      @EscapementWatch  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      my wrist is being pushed up against my other arm making it wider on the thumbnail shot probably. And I just remeasured as of now it is 6.7inch. It does swell in the summer heat? or it could just be bigger due to workouts. But I measure every couple months.

      This will never happen. Rolex will never allow Tudor to use the Submariner logo on their watches because it will immediately damage the Rolex Submariner sales. Common sence

    The Tudor used to be the poor man's Rolex but since a decade ago, it's a stand alone brand. Altho I do appreciate from every aspect the Tudor, whether it's 58 or 54 , pelagos 39 or 42 it hasn't clicked for me yet. When finally Rolex adopted the ceramic insert, back in 07, saw each and every aluminum insert model as outdated (with just one as an exception) and rushed to buy the sub and the GMT master ii. Sold almost every aluminum bezel insert models. Now, in the year 2023, Tudor still use aluminum inserts......many have no issues with that, but I do and that's what matters. At the end of the won't be the aluminum insert fan that will pay for my watch, I'll be paying it and want it with ceramic or sapphire. As for this model in the vid, am not a huge fan of vintage or vintage look or vintage remakes. Despite my age(and should have been attracted to vintage) I prefer classic but with modern applications watches. Same way I do with cars, won't go to extravagant modern designs but anything with classic and elegant lines, has to be updated with modern materials and technologies. Would I opt for an electric car, same way I reject anything battery/quartz/solar powered in watches, electric car is a firm no go as well. Thanks for the vid.

      its not that bad....but yea its weak compared to the Seiko I just reviewed. Kinda sucks when spending so much. When I compared it to a microbrand with 15 layers of bgw9 the tudor did decent....But against the SJE093 its like 50% as powerful. bummer.

    Too small. There was a reason vintage divers got bigger. 40mm is the perfect size for a dive watch in my humble opinion. That being said it'll make a good desk diver for most city dwellers.

    • @TreborTnemorf
      @TreborTnemorf ปีที่แล้ว +7

      May be too small for your taste but not too small for many.
      One reason vintage divers got bigger was fashion, hence why many got much larger than 40.
      The 54 wears larger than its 37mm due to its lug to lug.
      Looks good on my 7" wrist.

    • @stevebennett7783
      @stevebennett7783 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TreborTnemorf I'm glad you like it, so much so that you've obviously been out and bought one. I use my dive watches as a back up to my computer as well as snorkeling and kayaking so I prefer the legibility that you get with a 40mm+ watch. My current "Go to" watch is a Seiko tuna. Big watch but perfect for my needs. I have owned 2 x BB58s and they're just not my cup of tea. Enjoy your watch in good health.

    • @dstfno
      @dstfno ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stevebennett7783 Legibility is all about the handset style, not size of a watch. Whether you have this 37mm Tudor or their biggest 41mm one, you can read them all the same.
