  • David Martin marks the anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor with a report on a long-unsung hero of that day: Boatswain's Mate Second Class Joseph L. George, whose actions saved the lives of six crewmen from the flaming hulk of the USS Arizona, but whose identity was unknown for decades.

    In the early 80’s when I was active duty Marine, I spent many days sitting and listening to the Pearl Harbor survivors stories. Greatest generation indeed.

    Thankyou all of our veterans who served and lost their lives on this horrific day. We will keep the memories of Pearl Harbor alive . My daughter who is 15 didn’t even know about Pearl Harbor. A lot of young people have no idea the history of USA . Thankyou for all our veterans 🇺🇸🇺🇸 special thanks to Joseph L. George, a veteran of Pearl Harbor.

      And THAT is the SADDEST part of it for me. Fifteen years old and had no idea of the real history of the United States. It seem to me that some of the most important moments in our history are no longer taught in schools anymore... it's lost.

    This sailor deserves a medal!

  • @32a34a
    @32a34a 5 ปีที่แล้ว +46

    They say he threw a heaving line 70 feet to those sailors and dead on target on the first try. From what I hear
    that's pretty hard to do under normal circumstances let alone under intense fire and being shot at by enemy
    aircraft. He should have received the Medal of Honor.

    • @wilhard45
      @wilhard45 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      32a34a -- No, the Bronze Star with a "V" for valor sounds about right. Maybe a Silver Star but not a Navy Cross and certainly not a MOH. Sailors and Marines have very high standards when awarding a medal. Probably why those two branches have such a low percentage of medals issued. Just showing up is not enough to win a valor medal.

    • @kvbm
      @kvbm 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@wilhard45 Yeah, getting a medal or recommendation for valor is not the first thing these servicemen is thinking at first. Rescuing fellow servicemen/civilian or defuse dangerous life threatning situations in combat is.
      If anybody joining the armed forces or any rescue services (Police, Firefighter or Ambulance services) for the sole purpose of seeking valor, recommendations or medals only. In my opinion have nothing to do there.

    • @liftedchevy303
      @liftedchevy303 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree with willhard. A Medal of Honor would be something like going above and beyond, even though shot and wounded they still did their job, defied orders to save more life and render aid, just when the battle was thought to be lost the low ranking enlisted soldier took charge and devised a plan that saved the group of soldiers and won the battle. Scenarios like that are where a Medal of Honor might be do. Throwing a rope to some buddies who need help, I just am not seeing the hero, extraordinary, above and beyond in that.

    was in the base hospital that day & Ed was a Navy Chief at 7:00 a.m. Mass on
    Ford Island, who went on to become a Lieut. in a 30 year career! The"Tennessee"

    Their were so many heroes that day and many will never be immortalized. I am thankful for the ones that are but it is painful to know it has been over 80 years and they will never know that that they were American heroes. They were just happy to of saved some shipmates !lives being a hero was not on their minds !! In my early days in the Navy I served with a couple Pearl Harbor survivors and that day took a tole on them for the rest of their lives!!! I have never seen a movie of Pearl Harbor that really showed the heroes that day.

    but would you please stop with the god comments. God was not involved in any of this action. If he was why did he allow the enemy attack in the first place? God was not the one who displayed Valor. God was not the one who did any action whatsoever that day. The credit goes to the man who acted and only the man who acted.
