I sat on a bench outside a coffee house one summer night some years ago and struck up a conversation with a random stranger. We talked awhile about many thing other than music and I remember how down to earth he was and very humble. He introduced himself as Dougie, and we left it at that. I finally asked him if he played music himself and I remember him lowering his head with a big smile on his face. He then patted me on the back and said. "Yes, I've been around a few stages" Shortly after we shook hands and he eventually left with some people. It wasn't until later on that night when people told me who he was...Great man indeed.

The only thing more beautiful than Dougie MacLean's music is his music paired with strings. Heart-wrenchingly beautiful, Dougie speaks to my soul with his soothing yet emotive voice and music. Sigh.

Dougie is a good guy, down to earth, if you order from him direct he will probably autograph the cds for you.. Just tell him Doug in Alaska said to do it..lol.. Dougie taught me how to play his song, Ready For The Storm.. I recorded it on my Cd, The Alaskan mile.. He is a great teacher too..

I have always enjoyed watching a guitarist who obviously enjoys what he is doing (think: James Taylor) and Dougie certainly qualifies....and he can't help himself from doing a little slow dance as he plays, something he almost always does...beautiful work, as usual.

I opened up for Dougie many years ago up here in Alaska. We sat at the bar after the concert and picked guitars and traded odd tunings back and forth til around 8 am.. He had to play that morning at a book store in another town, and it was painful for him because of all the drinks and no sleep.. He calls me every now and then and reminds me that we should not make a habbit of doing that next time.. Dougie is a great guy and his picking is so clean..Thats what comes from constant playing..

I also love the male fiddle player wearing spectacles at the back on the right as you look at it. He is obviously loving it - absolutely wonderful.

l was fortunate to see and hear Dougie play at the Burns Humanitarian concert at the Brig O Doon Hotel Alloway. His music blows me away. Afterwards while standing outside the hotel chatting to people about what an amazing evening listening to Dougie when he came out and spoke to us. Hes a true gentleman , humble and down to earth. Definately a memory l will hold dear in my heart.

I first saw and heard him many years ago on several American talk shows. Loved him and his music then and still do.
My heart lifts with every note he sings.
The only American singer that came close was Don Williams who passed away several years ago.
Both were & are in Dougie's case, fine and humble gentlemen of song.

The more of his work that I get to listen to & I have been listening for 1/4 century or more, the more I rate him as a true genious, yet I work in a company of approx 400 & a safe bet is that 1% have heard of him let alone have his CDs or have been to some of his concerts & I will be the only one who has ever met him. Same with Harvey Andrew, Jez Lowe, Bob Fox & loads other greats.

I'd like to hear what this song means to you as well Seby.. I think it means something different each time to me. Today, when I listen to the song, I feel the tall trees represent older people, facing west into the setting sun of life. Motionless, on the cliff. I have an image of birds waiting on the cliff for that gust of wind to send them into the sky. This represents all the dreamers in society, who have never been encouraged to fly, or are stifled by fear. Maybe we are always waiting for the right gust. Maybe there is no gust, or when we have the chance, we just aren't able to fly, we haven't learned to trust our intuition because we have been told time and again that you can't trust it. The shouting loudly part seems to represent all the useless ideas that have been put forward, sold to us by experts and politicians, who either knowingly or out of ignorance lead society down the wrong path. Some of us see through the smokescreen, and when we speak the truth we are told it is impractical or not "cost effective", which really means there no way to screw over anyone for profit. But, our false leaders ignore the truth, the truth that nature speaks daily to those who listen. The little ones must walk on, and there are fewer and fewer ways for that to happen every day. It's depressing and anyone who really sees that, can't feel truly at ease. Planting a garden without chemicals, however, helps heal nature and heal ourselves emotionally and physically. Some of us don't have a clear direction. We see many possibilities and we pursue many paths, never finding the right place to match our idealistic vision. Sometimes, we long to break away, but then we hit the snooze button, brew some coffee to mask our tiredness, and hop into a machine, put the pedal to the metal and let her roar. So we are the dreamers, the ones on the cliff top waiting. Waiting for Gudot. But I'm ready for the storm. I think. I guess I'll see when the rains pours. But having Dougie's music makes that much more possible for me, and for my son. I've taken my son twice to see Dougie play, once in Seattle and once in Perth. When my son was younger we would listen to the entire "live from the ends of the earth" daily as we got ready for bed. And by the time "green grow the rushes" started playing it was time to hop in bed, and sing along to the last few songs. A fabulous routine and the stories Dougie tells, remind me of my own, sometime peril-packed youth experiences climbing in the mountains of Utah with my reckless friends. It's a wonder we survived climbing slippery waterfalls, or crossing ice fields in sneakers without any gear - next to huge cliffs. I'm glad it's just broken wings. I think Dougie has inspired many people to look for the truth, and live their lives accordingly and to strive for a closer relationship to Mother Earth. Thanks to Dougie. Much love, respect, and admiration!
