  • Claire Brock is joined by Ciaran Mullooly, Eoghan Corry & Rebecca Roche to discuss the recent report that found 70% of young people in Ireland are considering emigration.
Eoghan tells Claire that his nephew, who has trained as a doctor chose to emigrate due to a combination of cost of living and for better quality of life.
Eoghan Corry compares the emigration trend now to the eighties, stating,"it was a life choice then, it's more a lifestyle choice now."
Rebecca Roche disagrees with the idea mass emigration is a "lifestyle choice" and points to the life she had to leave behind.
"I had a life in Ireland, but towards the end it felt like I was being pushed out by Ireland itself."

It's a horrible place for us young people... We all have to leave and go elsewhere, this place is impossible to make any progress.

Housing shortage but asylum seekers are told they will be offered free housing, even though most of them are arriving from war free countries, including the UK.

Oh shut up with your blaming them for problems caused by the rich of our countries. We're all in the same boat

As a Canadian living in New York City, I have met a lot of people from Ireland who came to Canada and New York. Their conversation was similar to what the young lady at the end of the video said. I was shocked that young people from Ireland considered Vancouver and Toronto a better deal on income, housing and opportunity than Ireland. It sounds like Ireland has a political problem where FG and FF represent the landlords and not the emerging generation. If they leave for North America, you are creating a demographic time bomb.

But that's what they want, and they already have our replacements arriving in droves.

The panel is so out of touch, it is not a lifestyle at the moment for young people, the issue is they have no chance of getting on the housing ladder and rents are insane. You definitely get better value of living in other countries even in countries with a high cost of living such as Switzerland in which you get a lot higher wages.

The age profile of this panel is an absolute joke especially when discussing this topic. Granted you did have a call in from a younger Irish lady discussing her experience. However disgraceful not a single person under 50 on the live panel!!

money just doesnt go far enough in ireland. its a land of constant hidden costs everywhere.
also there is not enough of real large scale home grown irish industry in ireland. the country too reliant and affected by external market forces.
and last, public transport in ireland us very hit and miss and poor.

I wouldn't agree with you about public transport, I've seen big improvements in recent years, but Ireland is unaffordable for young people who want to buy their own homes

How can they even put up that insulting headline? It's because of housing third level charges cost of living.

Ireland is a small very badly run expensive country for most people. Thw average job pays badly thats why half the country is on social welfare or income support. The weather is awful and a health hazard with the dampness.
It costs too much to build anything or rent anything. Apart from that if your Mammy lives down the road you might save a few bob on child care which is also extorsonate. For young people go somewhere else for a few years and see how oth countries are run. Some are better some are not.
