If everyone practised juijitsu or judo breakfalls I'm sure it would save so many injuries. Granted, falling from a bike is different to falling from a person but the principles of injury prevention by learning how to fall properly crossover fine. For example I learned some jujitsu when I was 18, I then went on to become a fairly competent freerider and being fast n confident riding double black diamond grade trails and I have never broken any bones in 18 years of riding DH bikes. Yes I've hurt myself a lot, but learning to fall so it became a reflex has saved me a lot of time that would have otherwise been spent off my bike. *edit: hands do get mangled though, we're not falling on judo mats; I've reset my own dislocated fingers a fair few times.
I always think the best way to avoid injury on a crash is try to roll your body... this way the impact don't need to be absorved and the rolling will dissipate the energy
My right elbow is clicking and locking out when i bend it and sometimes makes me drop (fx. milk, food, even dropped my fox dhx... but this didn't happen because of biking tho...
