interesting question! i'm not 100% certain but i know the japanese word ayatori is related to "string figures" en.wikipedia.org/wiki/String_figure so i suspect during early prog it was just from calling it "string figure strat" since the mechanic is representative of that visually. my group learned this strat during early prog from a clip one of us found on twitter from a really awesome jp player
