  • Whilst I've got it out of the car I thought I'd give you a quick look at a fuel distributor from a Bosch KE Jetronic or CIS injection system. Popular with Porsche, Mercedes and VW/Audi in the 80s and early 90s before EFi became more ubiquitous.
    This setup is out of my 1994 Audi 80 2.3e that has the NG engine.
    Here's a link to the Mercedes Source video about cleaning CIS/KJet injectors:

    Just as an aside if a K-Jetronic car seems to be suffering from fuel starvation be aware that at least in some of these there's tiny fuel filter on the main inlet. If this gets blocked then you're going no where fast. I was told by a Audi dealer in the UK that it was meant to be removed at the first service after delivery e.g. 1000 miles but they never are.. Mine lasted until 135000 miles until nearly coming to a halt on the UK M6. This particular car was a 2004 Audi Coupe 5E and after establishing it was a fuel issue it was pretty soon obvious as soon as I began to disassemble the system. I can't remember if I actually removed it just pushed the innards out with a screwdriver but problem solved and it ran for another 100000 miles before getting rear-ended and written off.

    Eugh, I do NOT miss seeing those. Not one bit! Nope nope nope~
    If you do rebuild your distributor, keep watch for the...compensation port? Forget what it's actually called, but there's a tiny, easy-to-miss pinhole in the diaphragm that lines up with pinholes in each half of the distributor. As I recall (at least with the six-banger), the diaphragm will seem to fit right side up or upside down, except that pinhole is offset... It also loves to get clogged, and hates to get cleaned! Be cautious if you're using shellac or some other adhesive on the diaphragm, as it will find that pinhole and plug it right up.
    Wish I hadn't sold off that Crate'O'Parts(tm) when I moved from California! I had over a hundred Jetronic injectors I'd acquired from junkyards and ebay for $3-$5 each, all back-flushed and ready to go!

    • @Badgertronix
      @Badgertronix  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm rather partial to them but then I've only had to look after ones I've maintained myself and not neglected customer ones.
      I'll have a go at rebuilding one as soon as I have a spare one. I'd rather not brick my daily!
      What I'd do for a stack of kjet injectors!

    If all injectors are firing at the same time isnt that uneconomical? What about bore wear from the fuel washing the bores continously?

    • @mcplutt
      @mcplutt 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are not really firing, they are flowing constantly (Constant Injection System). Flow is regulated by the fuel distributor control plunger. Ofcourse electronic injection or direct injection is better for economy, but fuel wasn't so expensive 30-50 years ago 😃 All they wanted was more power than the carbureted version. There is really no bore wear, the Audi engines are really long lasting. There isn't enough fuel to wash the bore, if everything is working OK.

    • @robwilde6857
      @robwilde6857 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mcplutt "All they wanted was more power than the carbureted version."
      Then they should have switched to a multi carb set up. The airflow sensor plate caused a massive restriction in the inlet tract and the fact that it was continuous meant it provided no advantage over carbs in terms of allowing large valve overlaps.

    • @tonyreyes9969
      @tonyreyes9969 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Kp Raz; The K-Jetronic is a driveless mechanical injection system which needs no intervention of Electronic Control Unit function. The air-flow sensor and the fuel distributor are assemblies which form part of the mixture control unit. The amount of air sucked in by the engine is controlled by a throttle valve and measured by an air-flow sensor. An electrically driven fuel pump delivers the fuel to the fuel distributor via a fuel accumulator and a fuel filter. The fuel distributor allocates this fuel to the injection valves and the injection of fuel takes place continuously. That's where the "K" comes from, which stands for the German word CONTINUOUSLY. I hope this help you with your questions. All the best, cheers!!!

      KE Jetronic has electronic control of fuel and ignition. Electronically controlled mechanical fuel injection 👍

    • @tonyreyes9969
      @tonyreyes9969 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The well proven K-Jetronic fuel system was now uprated to a more intelligent and more efficient system by the addition of electronic circuitry. The K-Jetronic mechanical basic functions coupled with electronic adaptation and optimization functions is now called KE-JETRONIC -management of combined mechanical and electronic fuel-injection system ONLY. "Motronic" does the management of Combined ignition system and fuel-injection system.

    Hi Badger. I have a Volvo 740 K jet. Fuel only coming from 1 & 2 injector. 3 & 4 injectors are not blocked. Car was stood for 5 years. I assume if the diaphragm was knackered, it would affect all 4 injectors? I have had it running but the wiring for the fuel pump had been bodged and was only getting 9.6v with in tank pump not working at all. New tank pump and fixed wiring to main pump and I'm thinking I've pushed some muck into the fuel distributor. Any suggestions? I'd rather not crack open the distributor if there's a way of cleaning without. Sorry this is so long.

      @@Badgertronix Thanks Badger. I've done some research on CIS. I pulled the unit out and gave it a good external clean as the plunger operated by the air metering unit was a bit gummy. My working theory is that the control pressure has been adjusted to compensate for low fuel delivery from under powered pump. Now pump is getting full voltage, pressure is too high to allow metering plate to be lifted by vacuum. Just a working theory. Need to get the special bits of kit to test pressures and finding out what they're supposed to be would be an advantage as well. Injectors sing and spray well and equally when plate manually raised.
