How I trained the

  • The #SnootChallenge craze is all the rage on twinstagram just now. This is how I trained my border terriers to do it in about 5 minutes (just over). It uses shaping, a training method that lets the dog figure out what you want by gradually rewarding progressive steps towards the behaviour you want. The most effective steps are shown from about 2:00 onwards and if I were starting again with a new dog, this is where I would start.
A lot of the footage is from our first session, but some was out of shot, so I had to film some extra bits. Apologies that some still is out of shot, but the gist is there most of the time!
My dogs are used to shaping, so they offer behaviours when something new is around or I'm doing something different. Not all dogs are used to this and so this method might not work well for you (or it might take longer [or shorter for those more accomplished!]). You can lure the trick (also shown, and some of my steps involve a little bit of luring [that is using the treat to get the dog in the right position]).
Most important thing is to have fun with your dogs, whether or not they ever 'snoot'!

Wow. Your BT is so clever whereas or little girl is well, how can I put it?😂 She's great at giving high 5s though. Tried to teach her to lie down and she just looks at me as if I'm repeatedly showing her a card trick. I'd like to think she's saying to herself "what do I want to lie down for as I'm perfectly happy sitting," but I suspect there's a far a simpler explanation 😂

They each have their own characters! She sounds very endearing 😆 Love a strong-willed terrier. They're a nightmare to train, but hilarious and creative to live with! ❤️
