    I have had trouble with the brakes for some time. The tractor was starving for hydraulic fluid due to the screen being clogged with brake material so I decided to tackle the job myself. I hope this helps some of you, if you decide to take on this size of a project. I was able to get discounted John Deere parts with coupon from greenfarmparts.com.

    Thanks for the video! Our 5105 has similar brake issues and the hydraulic screen was all clogged up; it was obviously time to service the brakes. Your video certainly helped me know what I'm about to get into one of these weekends.
    Side note to others - if the inlet screen gets really clogged up you may hear a periodic 'psssp' noise at higher RPMs in the hydraulic pump (right side of engine) as the hydraulic suction side cavitates. Don't ignore it, hydraulic pumps aren't designed to pump air ;-)

      That cavitation is what got my attention real fast. I knew it was not getting fluid and screen was caked up. Thanks for watching

      Crap! I have been hearing a hissing sound from the pump on my 5105 2WD and now I know what’s coming. The brakes have chattered on mine since it was bought new in ‘05.🥺😭$$$$$$$ Thank you for making this video. There is another out there on a 5200, disassembly is the same. Brake disc assembly is a little different.

    Great video. My 5205 is having the same issue. Not nearly as nervous about doing this job now.

      It wasn’t near as bad as I thought it would be and brakes are still working like they should.

    Just want to thank you for the video. I have my 5520 jacked up and one tire off but nervous about the jacks. You put two jacks side by side with a 6 x 6 on both to hold the weight. Much better idea!

      It kept wanting to tilt on me. Best solution I had at the time and it worked. Thanks for watching.

    Thanks for the video! I've got a two wheel drive that needs brakes. Figure I'll give it a shot. Especially after John deere said they'd do it for 3800.00 bucks!

      It wasn't that bad of a job once I got started. The hardest part is draining the fuel and getting it stripped down to break the axles down. I realized that the only parts I needed were the brake discs. the other metal plates were able to be reused and would have saved some money. Good luck to you.

      I have another video where I break down the left axle and its more in depth. Hope your project goes well.

    Thanks for this I just bought a 2003 5105 with 1200 hrs. How much did it cost you for all the parts?

    how often do these need to be serviced? I wonder why we don't have them on cars.

      I am not sure. Ive had the tractor for 12 years and my dad had it for 8 years before that and never had the brakes checked. There are adjustments that can be made on the brake tension to each side that I did as needed. My issue started as one wheel sticking. If the tractor was rolling and you applied the clutch it would stop itself even on a hill. I knew it was past time to open it up. Thanks for watching.

    was it dragging? i got a 5105 that drags, getting worse. running and hit the clutch instead of rolling freely to a stop it stops almost immediately, moaning a little now after a long day. how much time in this repair? thanks

      It was like the brake was constantly on. It started on one side and then moved to the other. Now that I have repaired it, I could do it in about 4 hours by myself. First time took about 8. Just took my time to ensure everything was right and double checked everything. If i did it again i would not have purchased the spacer plates. They hardly ever get damaged.
      Thanks for watching and good luck with your repair. I have another video where I tear it down again. Had a gear that broke on one side and just went through the whole process again.

    Do you wet the friction discs with oil before installing them?

    • @4csadventures
      @4csadventures  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I did. I used the oil and wet both sides of the brake disc's and plates before putting it back together.

    Do you think that the brakes is what clogged up the filters

    • @4csadventures
      @4csadventures  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Most definitely. I didn't get a picture of the screen but it was covered in brake material. It wasn't allowing any fluid to go through the filter to get to the pump.

    I am about to tear into my 2000 5310. Did a fluid change in December last year and lost one brake just lost second brake so I believe you have solved my question as to cause. In your video it looks like you replace all 4 (?) discs. Is that necessary or are brakes pads the only necessary parts?

    • @4csadventures
      @4csadventures  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are correct. The Brake pads are the only ones I would have replaced knowing what I know now.

    • @dougbhatt7079
      @dougbhatt7079 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Are there two pads on each side?

    • @4csadventures
      @4csadventures  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dougbhatt7079 Yes, Two brake pad plates per side. Unless you get in there and the spacer plates are damaged, I would not mess with them.

      I received coupon code by email and I think the total cost for all parts and fluids was about 1000.
