Ravi brought me here.I've listened to him for years.my parents were hippies and they had a hell of a record collection that is mine now.thanks for the video man,I've always been curious to know how sitars are played.
Very straightforward explanation of the various parts of the instrument. I found the detail regarding the arrangement of the strings and how they’re tuned to be helpful. Thank you.
+William Bugg Thank you for your interest. Please contact me at npatwardhan@gmail.com if you have any questions. All the best with your journey with this wonderful instrument!

Your introduction is really great. You explained all about the sitar and it’s components in very simple and clear terms that any beginner would understand. Thank you so much Looking forward to follow your next lesson. Would it be on TH-cam.?
Hey Guys, thank you for all your comments, support and likes! So excited to revive this series. I will be posting a basic Sitar tuning lesson this week. Please do subscribe and stay "tuned" for the tuning lesson 😊
greeting from France and thx for the video. I am really showing more and more interest about buying and learning to play the sitar as a psychedelic rock musician . loving all those orientals sounds !
Sitar has a Music for spiritual growth, you say. I guess now I realise why I feel Internal Deep Peace and Mysteries whenever I hear it's Magical Sound 😄
This is incredibly helpful, thank you so so much for uploading this! I've been wanting to play sitar since I was 10 years old and now I finally decided to start playing. I subscribed! Thank you so much again!
Hi Kiki, you are most welcome, and thank you so much for your compliments. Please do contact me at npatwardhan@gmail.com, if you have any questions. I do teach on Skype as well. Thanks and may music light your path forever!

Wow sounds great! I also teach on Skype if you would be interested :) Wish you all the best, may this music enrich your life and bring you eternal peace and happiness!
Thanks for making this informatice sitar tutorial Nikhilsitar. I myself just got back to the sitar and wanna advance in this amazing instrument. Xavier
just awesome sir.your teaching style is really good... nd in this video one thing is touching my heart is.. u said that it isn't just showing to u a skill.. or showoffs but it is for spiritual..(something like this) it's really a nice.. thank you sir.
That was really great Nikhil Sir, especially what you said about your "Gharana" and spiritual connection. I really want to start learning Sitar. I will be in touch. Thank you very much.
+Mark Straka Thank you for your interest. No, I have not mentioned this. I will release a video soon to explain the tuning. Please also contact me at npatwardhan@gmail.com.
+nikhilsitar In many cases, when I listen to Indian classical music, I hear and am much fascinated by the ringing sympathetic strings. For one example, sarangi players will swipe across their sympathetic strings to sound them like a full and very rich chord. Your tanpura on this video also seems, sometimes, to play out the whole array of the notes of the raga. Is this an electronic tanpura that can play the notes of the raga?
Wow great presentation! You have a beautiful sitar I was always wondering about it and you answered all my questions at once. Just one question are there different cords on a sitar EX:open chords, power cords; or is it just "plucking" for lack of a better word
Kris8530 Thank you for your compliments! Sorry for getting back late. Yes there are chords where you can play on two strings at the same time, sort of like the guitar. Index finger on one fret on the first string and the middle finger on the same or another fret on the second string. Otherwise it is mostly plucking. Please email me on npatwardhan@gmail.com, I teach on Skype as well if you are interested. Thanks!
Like the fact you explain that it is a spiritual practice rather a show off . Would be intersted to learn more . I have learned sitar long time ago in school . know the basics and want to learn more .
+ready teddy There used to be the Hiren Roy Sitar from Kolkatta. I don't think they make them anymore and if they do, it will be on the expensive side. If you are interested in buying a decent priced Sitar, please do contact me at npatwardhan@gmail.com. All the best!
Nikhil Patwardhan Hi mr. I'm looking for a surbahar of great quality but not expensive. Because i live in Canada and add the shipping to. How mush with the case and shipping?
The sound is created with an instrument called a Tanpura. It is used to keep the base sound, as a reference to tune the Sitar in case it goes off tune while playing. One of the best electronic tanpura players is the iTablaPro on the iPhone.
Hey great video it was very helpful, I am looking into buying a sitar sometime this month. I have been a musician for 10 years I play all percussion and guitar but I've wanted a sitar for so long and now is the time. I do have a few questions like where is the best place to purchase a sitar like yours?

Im just wondering as an american with no sitar teacher( most of my lessons would be youtube ) If its possible to learn how to create simple but harmonious and beautiful tones on the sitar. Please reply and give me some advice i always love to take advice from someone experineced
Oran , I'm a generic guitarist . I've been playing a long time. The sitar is indeed a spiritual instrument . It is a simple instrument as well. I believe that you will make an excellent sitarist , based on your post comment. You MUST follow your heart . I'm not gonna give you any advice , other than , GO FOR IT ! You'll do just fine.
There are many factors but the three important ones are 1) the sustenance of the note, 2) mellowness of the sound (should not be too sharp) and 3) the resonance of the sympathetic strings. Go for a non-epoxy bridge.
Hello great video! I just want to know if you could make some video tutorials in helping people tune the sitar in different keys? I just purchased a sitar and am struggling to learn different types of tuning other than C which I have it in now. I would also like to learn to tune the 12 resonant strings below as I find having the right keys difficult. Your help would be much appreciated :)

What is the sound playing in the background?
333FB The sound in the background is generated with an Apple App called iTablaPro. It is a simulated sound of an instrument called a Tanpura. This is a 4 (for vocal) and 5 (for instrumental) stringed instrument and it's main purpose is to keep the base tune so that the main instrument can be re-tuned if it goes off-tune.
