    the " hand-werpen" thing is a legend , folklore
The real thing....Antwerpen is derived from the latin (Roman) name Antverpia
Antverpia would come from Ante (before) Verpia (deposition, sedimentation), indicating land that forms by deposition in the inside curve of a river
Antwerpen is the 2nd biggest port in Europe and the largest petrochemical port in the world

The Antwerp City Hall (and the Brabo statue) is not located on the Groenplaats but on the Grote Markt (Grand Market)
On the Groenplaats there's the statue of the painter Pieter Paul Rubens :)

Dutch does have a lot of words which are French in origin (but not as much as English). This dates from the time that French was the "lingua franca". Not because it was conquered by France. This only happened once in history during the reign of Napoleon.

It's a waste to travel and not learn the language where you are, it's only smart and respectful it shows you care.

This is a story told by a Dutch citizen and the history is not at all correct. He does not talk about the ages 12 until 15 when Flanders was very rich. For a moment Gent and Brugge were the second biggest towns in western Europe after Paris. He talks mainly about Antwerpen which became an important town and port much later

trams never run on time here (because they get stuck by traffic, meaning cars) but I recommend using a bicycle : as a local, you can get anywhere within 15 minutes (is this a new beat callback? Yes it is : 15 minutes)

In the Netherlands they like to use foreign words in French, English and even German. In Flanders they try to use Dutch words instead of French words (ambulance in Netherland, ziekenwagen in Flanders).
