I had one these cars. The following is a list of maintenance problems I had in 12 years: 1. The battery died because it was super old. 2. A headlight bulb went out because it was super old. 3. Nothing else.

The Logic behind replacing both Front Rotors , ALL Spark Plug Wires or all Spark Plugs is because what happened to a Franchise called "Tune-Up Masters" in the 1970's. Tune-Up Masters replaced only one spark plug on a Womans car. 3 months later, other Plugs failed..She took T.U.M. to court for Inconveience..The Judge sided with the Woman : Said you shoulda known better T.U.M., if ALL of those Spark Plugs were NEW on a certain date when they were installed , you shoulda known that the rest were soon to follow. So don't let a "Saw Mill Mechanic" just change "one" spark plug or do the Left Front Brakes & not the Right Front Brakes @ the Same Time.

There was no good reason for me to watch this video. I don't have a rav4 and I'm not running a p0301 on my 98 tacoma. I watched the entire video anyways. This should be the format of every car repair/car education video. Good video, clear audio, no frills, no clickbait. Keep it up! Wish you were on the east coast for the repairs that I still don't feel comfortable attempting.

I had the exact same problem on an old ford truck. I finally figured it out doing a similar method to diagnose, but i got lucky by checking under the hood at night and I could see one of the spark plug wire arcing, and it was worn out and needed replaced - did them all. Runs perfect now.
Can't believe you don't have more followers, great vid love your diagnosis, i,ll certainly will be watching more but I have an ulterior motive as I've a 2014 RAV4 don't do my own maintenance because of serious back injury but now I can at least tell the mechanic what is wrong but hopefully because it's a Toyota I'll not be visiting him often, keep up your great work you're a genius
I suggest if you are not a daily shop mechanic, that you never tell the mechanic what's wrong. Tell him (or her HELLO FAYE!) the symptoms you have, no detailed lists. Have him figure it out. A good mechanic will. Pointing them in a direction may lead them down a wrong path and it may be his error, but his business side told him to listen to you the customer. Let them find it. And with your own knowledge you can better figure out if they are right or wrong. But in case you are wrong, their diagnosis is their time as well. But that cost should be put towards the repair.
Don't know they were brilliant cars we have a 05 Corolla verso whit about 245 thousand kms and the chain rattles but outher wise it still runs good and even arfter sitting for a year or more it fired straight up

Peter, great video and diognostics. I wish you were close to were I live, southern Calif. I am having anti knock sensor problems, 5k miles after replacing both of them on my 2000 Sienna. I used Beck/Arley knock sensors that were claimed to be made by Denso. The wiring harness that connects to them was also replaced (factory Toyota part),as were the spark plugs (Toyota Iridum Denso), plug wires (NGK), pcv valve and injector O rings (Toyota parts). I have cleared the codes and they come back withing 5 miles.
Jose, stop changing parts and go to a Toyota Dealership and have the car diagnosed. Get the diagnosis in writing to estimated cost to repair-labor and parts separate. Then order your parts on www.rockauto.com and fix it yourself. I would also ask the dealership to show me the problem.
And don't trust that Beck/Arnley part was actually made by Denso if the salesman felt that if he said that would get you to buy it. Some parts are, some aren't. Agreement with Mangar, stop throwing parts at it hoping something sticks.
Densos lasted 170 or so in an ES300 I did. It was time. Mileage cost about $100 extra in gas every month. Ten months that's a thousand lost. Could also have been the wires. They were originals. 20 years. But the plugs on one side were in the back crammed against the firewall. Superhot back there by the rear manifold. Cooked the wires on. Stuck worse than the #1 here in this video. Dielectric probably liquified long ago.
Mechanic missed 1 plug at 120k mile first tune up. Changed plugs again at 175k cos i bot wrong plugs first time. Ngk irridium. Looked totally fine, cud have gone another 100k easy.. but changed to all brand new iridium.
I don't know about these Toyota's, but for a Honda I also look after, every internet forum tells me not to go near Bosch plugs or I'll have serious problems. I recently pulled the plugs just to check their state while I was doing other maintenance and guess what I found? Bosch plugs. The engine runs fine with no hesitation or any other noticeable issue. But according to the internet this car almost shouldn't be running. Seems there could be as many myths about plugs as there is engine oil lol.
@@chocolate_squiggle Hondas might be able to handle it. But for Honda NGK is better. Next time it's the turn to change them, go NGK and see if you have better mileage and improvements you don't notice because you're used to your car. Bosch may be good for other German or American designed cars, but for Toyota, go Denso.
I used autolite iridium for my 03 Camry and I noticed my gas mileage drop so threw them away and went with Denso and back to normal. Like he said, spend the money.
@@johnaustin2276 tipoff is he went from dual to single. Brand NGK or Denso doesn't matter. But he changed the spark characteristics. Would bet if he put new duals back in he'd get better mileage. Problem is people don't want to because stores can charge $15 for each pencil thin spark plug of some engines.

Good mechanics keep all kinds of old parts. Not every old part, but Car Wizard keeps old bearings and brake shoes to even things up when using his press or other similar tasks. When he moved, he was upset his easier way of doing things was disrupted because the scrap guy took all of it from the old shop.
@@paulc2548 From the way you speak I believe you have very little experience with this. You need to do your research because there is so little I know about your vehicle. But I do know you have a fourth generation that is years 2013-2018. No dipstick, and leveling straw after drain plug removal. If you don't know what that means, I suggest you take it to a mechanic for a spill and fill. Around $50. WS fluid only. Open the fill plug first always. Because if you open the drain plug and the fill plug can't be opened. You'd have to figure a way to pump in the fluid through the drain hole. I don't recommend an aggressive flush machine unless you have proof it has had frequent and on time trans service. You may want to read online on forums however know that there is a lot of pissing matches online and moderators are full of themselves and their egos to help. Many just give opinions or harassment. Read, but don't participate.

This is a good way to do a more complete flush. Again he shows the side fill hole above the fill line on the side of the unit.
Love the channel, but a tip in the future, try not to touch the spark plug wires with bare hands while the car is running, if one of the wires has a small hole in it and you run your hand across it you will be shocked extremely painfully. Let’s just say it’s not a fun experience.
Any tip for cyl 2 running rich? Sparkplug has carbon. Other sparkplugs looks normal. we change cyl 2 fuel injector. Engine vibrates when on full stop but runs fine. Coil, wires for cyl 2 all working. Thanks in advance.
Yeah I hate mechanics like that!! Metal clunk noise? Go change the struts, all of them!! SMH NOPE!! Was a loose bolt. Or guessing which part is bent. And changing the wrong part. Wtf. Shows how good a mechanic he is! This guy is amazing!
A bad ignition lead can cause intermittent misfire when engine is NOT under heavy load. Bought an old car ages ago with a cylinder down , reportedly because of bad compression. Yes, it was a bit low on compression on that cylinder, but after replacing the leads it went for another 6 years without a problem.
I have rav4 model 2009. Error in cylinder 3 when I reach high speed or climb high level. Changing sparks and coils plus swapping injectors but still same code. Checking cylinder 3 compression it is ok.what do you purpose please.
Hello Sir I bought a 2002 Toyota Sequoia 2 wheel drive. The gentleman that I bought the car from was a mechanic and forgot what coolant he used. First he said Dexcool than Asian. When I look at the coolant it is pinkish/red. I don't feel comfortable and would like to flush the whole system and put back oem coolant. Would you do a video on this topic.
Toyota engines or the same relative vintage are the same way to service as most engines generally. Google Dec-Cool and you will know it's not that in your system. Pink Red is Toyota's coolant color.
what test could have been done to see that the wire was bad? could you have done the water test in a dark room? where you spray the wire with water and watch for spark?
spray over the wires, but don't waterlog it. don't spray too much wires down the spark tubes. You could try spraying on the distro cap if you have an older car that has one. Again don't super drench anything, just mist enough for it to arc or make ground through the conductivity of water. Too much and you won't see it jump.
Not enough to diagnose on. Pull over and check code immediately or buy a device that logs the codes real time. Check all the basics, petrol cap. And work around to plugs wires, and injector ohms.

Toyota I got a problem with a 2010 rav4 4cinders,p0303 code,exchange injector,coil,spark plugs from a known good piston same problem,comprecion is good.Most of the time the problem is only at high speed or climb a high hill.thanks in advance for your help.
I have a 2006 Avalon. It had the same code and the solution was the same. Since replacing wires/coils is a bit more involved, just opted to replace all the plugs too while they had the intake manifold off.
@@davidnull5590 Are you confusing it with another engine? It has the 2GR-FE and it is very tight up in the back valve cover. Maybe you can reference a video of someone actually removing them? But most shops will try to make you take the intake off for the V6 engines. Maybe you're thinking of the AR engines in the camry where the plugs are straight across in front of your face. I will say on a DIFFERENT engine I worked on, the 1MZ-FE not this gen, but previous as in late 90's you could get a stubby and short extensions and pull them out that way no intake plenum removal necessary. But it may be on a 2GR-FE Avalon 2006.
I have a 1999 Toyota rav4 and its idle runs high and hot. What is the problem? It should be just below 1 but it idles above 1 almost at a 2 if you know what i mean. Is there an easy fix... I just sub too

I had 3 cylinders misfiring before replacing valve cover gasket on my 3.4 ‘01 tundra. Now I have 5 cylinders out of 6 misfiring as well as the MAF and intake temperature sensor codes going off. Any hint? I also replaced the intake plenum gaskets

Sheet metal and even thick frame rails don't last much more than ten years without proper and religious underbody treatment and even cleaning off the salt every time it was driven in snow. If I lived in the area, I'd have a winter vehicle and a non snow no salt contact vehicle I'd want to keep forever.
Yeah plate frame says Carlsbad. Probably given to her by her grams or bought from a grandma no longer driving, and other than the drive to go to college there, probably doesn't really see any mileage in that small town area.
That other shop that told her it was her computer needs to be reported to the Attorney General and she needs to put a review on Google to warn other customers to avoid that shop like the plague. Also I would change all the spark plugs to DENSO-original, and new set of wires. She can also get the leaks fixed.
He said at the end, for the student, he just charged her an hour. But actually spent more time but didn't say normal video recording time 2-3 hours or more.
I have the same car, similar issue with one spark plug getting dirty because oil leaks in one spark plug. 4 spark plug changed. And workshop has order a sealing for the cover. Until that my car loses power from 1,500-2,500 rpm
got one of these and it turned out and O2 sensor was causing issues but wasn't causing a check engine light telling me was the O2 sensor, bank 1 sensor 1 in my case but I have a v6
That's the problem with Toyota. They know throwing on the money light causes many cars to fail reinspection for the state. Especially in Japan. Where more cars are 5 years old or less. This keeps costs low and planned obsolescence a nonstarter. What was your first hint? Extremely low gas mileage?
I had a similar problem.They spray misted Water on my wires and dragged a test light over the wires .changed All wires and plugs double iridium. AND her case maybe OEM cap and rotter(old school)

Denso spark plugs lasted me 159k miles, I changed them because I was bored that weekend 😂.

I took out NGK dual electrode iridium replaced with Denso iridium single electrode fuel mileage went down

So if you have a P0300,301 and 302 it may be plug wires? The plug wires were replaced 15,000 miles ago.

Because if you open the drain plug and the fill plug can't be opened. You'd have to figure a way to pump in the fluid through the drain hole. I don't recommend an aggressive flush machine unless you have proof it has had frequent and on time trans service. You may want to read online on forums however know that there is a lot of pissing matches online and moderators are full of themselves and their egos to help. Many just give opinions or harassment. Read, but don't participate.

This is a good way to do a more complete flush. Again he shows the side fill hole above the fill line on the side of the unit.

Love the channel, but a tip in the future, try not to touch the spark plug wires with bare hands while the car is running, if one of the wires has a small hole in it and you run your hand across it you will be shocked extremely painfully. Let’s just say it’s not a fun experience.

Any tip for cyl 2 running rich? Sparkplug has carbon. Other sparkplugs looks normal. we change cyl 2 fuel injector. Engine vibrates when on full stop but runs fine. Coil, wires for cyl 2 all working. Thanks in advance.

A bad ignition lead can cause intermittent misfire when engine is NOT under heavy load. Bought an old car ages ago with a cylinder down , reportedly because of bad compression. Yes, it was a bit low on compression on that cylinder, but after replacing the leads it went for another 6 years without a problem.

Hello Sir I bought a 2002 Toyota Sequoia 2 wheel drive. The gentleman that I bought the car from was a mechanic and forgot what coolant he used. First he said Dexcool than Asian. When I look at the coolant it is pinkish/red. I don't feel comfortable and would like to flush the whole system and put back oem coolant. Would you do a video on this topic.
Toyota engines or the same relative vintage are the same way to service as most engines generally. Google Dec-Cool and you will know it's not that in your system. Pink Red is Toyota's coolant color.

what test could have been done to see that the wire was bad? could you have done the water test in a dark room? where you spray the wire with water and watch for spark?
spray over the wires, but don't waterlog it. don't spray too much wires down the spark tubes. You could try spraying on the distro cap if you have an older car that has one. Again don't super drench anything, just mist enough for it to arc or make ground through the conductivity of water. Too much and you won't see it jump.

Not enough to diagnose on. Pull over and check code immediately or buy a device that logs the codes real time.
Check all the basics, petrol cap. And work around to plugs wires, and injector ohms.

I’d recommend OEM spark plug wires. I’ve been stung twice by cheaper (and new) aftermarket wires and returning to OEM fixed it both times.

I have a 2006 Avalon. It had the same code and the solution was the same. Since replacing wires/coils is a bit more involved, just opted to replace all the plugs too while they had the intake manifold off.
'06 Avalon has coil packs instead of plug wires. And you don't have to remove the intake manifold to get at them.
What did the shop do to your Avalon?
@@davidnull5590 Are you confusing it with another engine? It has the 2GR-FE and it is very tight up in the back valve cover. Maybe you can reference a video of someone actually removing them? But most shops will try to make you take the intake off for the V6 engines. Maybe you're thinking of the AR engines in the camry where the plugs are straight across in front of your face. I will say on a DIFFERENT engine I worked on, the 1MZ-FE not this gen, but previous as in late 90's you could get a stubby and short extensions and pull them out that way no intake plenum removal necessary. But it may be on a 2GR-FE Avalon 2006.

Last time I got the P0301 was a crack spark plug, but, on a Dodge, it was a faulty coil. NGK for me.
I agree with either NGK or Denso spark plugs. I do prefer Denso sparks for my 2002 Toyota Tacoma 4x4 double cab.
I have a 1999 Toyota rav4 and its idle runs high and hot. What is the problem? It should be just below 1 but it idles above 1 almost at a 2 if you know what i mean. Is there an easy fix... I just sub too

I had 3 cylinders misfiring before replacing valve cover gasket on my 3.4 ‘01 tundra. Now I have 5 cylinders out of 6 misfiring as well as the MAF and intake temperature sensor codes going off. Any hint? I also replaced the intake plenum gaskets
Clean MAF with a can of MAF cleaner? Inspect and maybe replace engine air filter? That's what I would do

Sheet metal and even thick frame rails don't last much more than ten years without proper and religious underbody treatment and even cleaning off the salt every time it was driven in snow. If I lived in the area, I'd have a winter vehicle and a non snow no salt contact vehicle I'd want to keep forever.
Yeah plate frame says Carlsbad. Probably given to her by her grams or bought from a grandma no longer driving, and other than the drive to go to college there, probably doesn't really see any mileage in that small town area.

That other shop that told her it was her computer needs to be reported to the Attorney General and she needs to put a review on Google to warn other customers to avoid that shop like the plague. Also I would change all the spark plugs to DENSO-original, and new set of wires. She can also get the leaks fixed.

I have the same car, similar issue with one spark plug getting dirty because oil leaks in one spark plug. 4 spark plug changed. And workshop has order a sealing for the cover. Until that my car loses power from 1,500-2,500 rpm

That's the problem with Toyota. They know throwing on the money light causes many cars to fail reinspection for the state. Especially in Japan. Where more cars are 5 years old or less. This keeps costs low and planned obsolescence a nonstarter. What was your first hint? Extremely low gas mileage?

I had a similar problem.They spray misted Water on my wires and dragged a test light over the wires .changed All wires and plugs double iridium. AND her case maybe OEM cap and rotter(old school)
OEM everything when repairing a Toyota.
