    It's time to wake up little Articos after a long winter. We stay on the boat for two nights, doing some cleaning, checking the engine and just have a cosy time. Back on the farm we start ripping up some cedar for the hull!
    We are a Swedish family who have sailed the world since 2016 while sharing the adventures here on TH-cam. While we are still sailing our main focus now a days is building RAN III, a 50 ft sailboat that we are building from scratch. We post a new episode every Friday so make sure to subscribe and hit the bell to be the first to know when there is a new episode!

    Vera is beyond cute! It looks like you are also teaching her English as she responded "yes" when you asked her how she slept in English. That is terrific and amazing how children pick up languages so easily.

    Johan, wax your table saw table and buy a piece of formica to adhere to your outfeed table. This will dramatically reduce friction and make it much easier to push planks through.

    • @torbjornahman
      @torbjornahman ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Is wax the best option? Would it perhaps interfere with the epoxy later on? There are other lubricants that will not leave a residue on the wood. I have something for my planar but not sure what it is really.

    • @seanlathbury5410
      @seanlathbury5410 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Wax and Formica are good options but polyethylene varnish is less expensively than Formica and lasts longer wax. Just my thoughts. 😊

    Vera is growing so fast. Always fun to see her play and enjoy her life. I am an old grandma and today was hoping I live long enough to see the finish of your boat and the day she splashes. She is coming along so good and I cant wait to see the end result. You both work so hard it was nice to see you have a somewhat relaxing day on your little boat. Have a great weekend!

    With so much wood to rip, and your fence being wood, I think the fence will wear pretty fast. I have been doing woodworking all my life and I would highly recommend using Formica covering on the fence. It will last and be very slick and not create so much resistance as the wood fence will. You might be able to find a Formica table leaf or something like that locally in an old furniture sales shop. It should be cheap and work rather well for you. Good Luck. Carl

    14:49 if you figure that you want more, you could unscrew those two bolts there and slightly bend the sheet metal (it won't mind) so that you can put two wood wedges and expand the surface area of the rectangle to match that of the circle. As for the adapter, personally i'd just get some cereal box cardboard, have the two (rectangle and cylinder) bosses made out of wood on both ends and wrap the cardboard to make an adapter that's a transition from shape one to shape two. Some aluminium tape will provide the necessary strength and sealing power when you meet the saw and the hose. Maximum air transfer.
    17:55 you can always buy a bigger motor (cheapo second hand pump motor should do the trick, usually changing the bearings and brushes brings them back to life) and that should be more than enough to help you cut that kind of wood (given the size i observed). Matthias Wandel (great feller, worth following on YT) has made his own band saws out of wood and he's been using them for years now, with motors that are quite a bit bigger than the size of the apparent machine. His middle sized one is actually twice stronger than what you'd get on the market (as far as i could get them near me, at least).
    19:33 unless that's max saw blade height (in which case use a few drops of concentrated liquid soap or some warmed up duck fat, whichever you feel ok with using), raise the blade just a hair above and have the missus use a laundry soap on the exposed teeth every few pushes. That will load up the blade and allow it to slip. Before i install my new blades, i take a piece of rough sand paper and rough up the surface, the scuffed up surface allows me to load up the two sides of the blade with laundry soap (which has a lot of fat and therefore very slippery) which in turn gives me a head start whenever we cut old beams (in the field of restoration, we're not allowed to modify or alter the faces of the beam, but we are allowed, in some cases to make the faces into veneer for carbon fiber beams. That wood is so dry and being old, so difficult to cut, that it's basically like trying to cut wet wood with a dull saw blade).
    One extra trick is to cut the separator fin out of a thicker piece of metal and then using a grinder, shape it such that it becomes a wedge, at the front end, same thickness as the existing one, and at the back, thicker by at least one mm on the side opposite to the fence. Polishing it to a mirror will also help AND important, clean the teeth of the saw blade with a brass brush. Gummed up teeth don't cut as good as clean ones, obviously, sharpening them helps a lot as well, for which i recommend a cheap, but effective tool AKA "the machinist's synthetic ruby stone". Found in the usual places online, it's excellent to sharpen these kinds of teeth. I'd get the 5 stone set (rod, wedge, and the assorted flat types) because you never know what else you'll need them for.

    Considering how much you have to rip ,being a life long woodworker and cabinet maker I'd strongly recommend buying at least one more blade two would be better and change them out before the blade starts to get dull. You could use a new sharp saw blade while you have the dull blade sharpened. Using a sharp blade is not only easier on you and the saw but you will get cleaner accurate cuts that will make your job so much easier. I change my saw blades as soon as I feel drag or hear the motor having to work harder. I always have three blades so I can have one being sharpened ,one to work with and a spare in case I chip a tooth or it starts to cut harder. My saw flier can usually get my saw blades sharpened in three to five days depending on his work load. I only use carbide tooth blades because they cut better and last a lot longer then conventional blades.
    It may also pay you to purchase a hand held metal detector.
    They have a metal detecting wand that people who use metal detector use to check the holes they dig to find the metal objects thier large metal detectors locate. The wand is about 10 inches long and two inches around. They work very well finding any metal that could be hidden in a plank or beam. They only cost around one hundred dollars and could save you the costly expense of having to replace a carbide tooth or a saw blade. One nail or bullet can really ruin your day on a job of this magnitude. Good luck ,looking forward to watch your progress on this huge build.

    Nice work , nice days at the dock. The reason you saw is jamming is due to the long extension board you made.
    Or better said the reason the original extension tool is short has to do with the free run at the back and of the circle saw. Having the wooden extension it tends to run stiffer. The saw is almost cutting twice what take more energy.

    Johan, I'm wondering (since your boat will be around 50 feet long), if you will be scarfing the planks together or using butt joints, and butt blocks? I know that scarfing will actually reduce the coverage of those planks (hence, you'll need more cedar boards), and an abundance of butt blocks can have its own negative impact. As you're a very intuitive man, and you think like an engineer, I'm sure you've weighed these two methods out fully in your mind-- I'm just curious what you've decided? I'm seriously interested in your build, and I'll enthusiastically watch every episode as you release them. This is a major journey, and I look forward to the entire build! My best, from USA.

    Looks very promising.. Step by step and take the time to set up the ripping and planing..

    Nice! That saw is a little monster! I thought it would take much longer time to rip those thick planks! I'm eager to see how you attach the strips to the temporary frames so the frames can be removed later on...hmmm. I know you have it figured out :) :)
