As a ranch worker/farmer who doesn't ride horses. Square toe is by far the most comfortable boot style. I have passed out in my boots many times after a hot summer day's work, waiting on dinner. I always know new boots fits right when I wake up from a cat nap, and forget my boots are still on, they feel as comfortable as house slippers when they are right

As an Englishman I am about as far from a cowboy as you can get but I have always loved cowboy boots. Each time I visit the states I return with a couple pf pairs and have about 9 pairs of Lucchese exotics snip toes. However I have discovered the barn boot and have to say these square toe boots are so comfortable even over a 10 to 12 hr day it is unreal, so yes whilst they are not as downright handsome as the traditional toe they make up for it in comfort,

Great breakdown of the square toe boot. I quit wearing boots altogether because my feet hurt too much in the point of the toe bunched together. I started wearing round toe cowboy boots when I was in high school, stopped wearing them for awhile, then got back into wearing them, but started wearing J toe boots. Since then, I went back to wearing round toe and medium round toe boots again and then started wearing snip toe boots. Like many other guys, I wasn't a fan of square toe boots, but that changed after I got my first pair. Now I love and own many different toe style boots, a couple different heel styles, as well as many different skins. I absolutely love wearing cowboy boots. If more guys would try wearing them, they may understand why those of us who already wear them, actually wear and love them.

I have recently found your videos and I am hooked! Great breakdown on the square toe. I can say I prefer the square toe due to the fact that I have a very wide foot and anything less than custom hand made boots my foot feels cramped after a long day. Take a look at cavalry boots from the 1800s most were square toe or the snip toed boots. I can't say I have a preference for looks, that just depends on the boot. Great video, keep up the great work!

Pointed toe boots don't squeeze toes by default it's all in the sizing. I've found that much of this myth has come from stores and companies not educating their customers so many people get the wrong size to begin with. Happened to me too. I had my toes cramped for years and thought that was just the way it was but once I got the right size and width I realized toe shape does not correlate to comfort when you have the correct size. That being said, square toes are the most forgiving if you have the wrong size which is another reason why companies push them so much

Never been a fan of square toed boots. I've been wearing pointed X-toe and narrow J-toe boots since the late 80s and early 90s. An old girlfriend of mine also just wore pointed toe boots. I read in a book on cowboy boots that different toe and heel styles all come and go, as well, and come around again.

My first pair of boots back on 24th September 1994 was a pair of Tony Mora nubuck square-toed boots. Living in Ireland, there wasn't many options for boots back then, but my next couple of pairs were Sendra square-toed boots. Then I moved on to Loblan 295 wide-square toes, and the narrower square toe. From there I moved on to Loblan 548 style with a kinda chisel/snip toe - but relatively narrow square to.
I've had a pair of Tony Lama 3R square toes (which I was thoroughly unimpressed with), and a pair of Boulet Buckaroo 17" shaft, with a wide - but flat - square toe. I really liked the Boulets but they were an E sizing, so I had some loose play to contend with.
I want to get a pair of Boulet Stovepipe "Shooter" boots, but I'm kinda tempted to go with the round toe this time, instead of the square toe...

I was told by a working cowboy (i.e., he runs a ranch here in Texas and rides a horse) that he and others prefer square toes because it's easier to mount and dismount. That was interesting and something I'd never considered. I prefer round toes myself. The Sunday-go-to-meetin' comment earlier made me chuckle.

The truth is that those "square toe" boots that look like skin diving flippers with the corners rounded off are great for getting to shore if your horse throws you into the river and that's all they're good for. If your toes are really spread out that much, you need to have a couple of them on each foot amputated.

My first pair of cowboy boots were Acme brand, with a narrow square toe, somewhere between square and snip toe. And this has just stuck in my mind as proper cowboy boots ever since. I really long for the return of Dan Post El Paso boots, but just a dream more than likely. I have one pair that I cherish. I totally understand about the comfort factor of the square toe. In my younger days, for fashion sake, I wore the pointy toe boots. I still have them! But, for comfort sake, I now wear the round toe. In fact, my foot is small enough to wear a child's size 6 and they always have a good arch! Now that I'm much older though, I even put an extra gel cushion inside. Doing retail for 36 years kinda "killed my feet"! Retired now, so I can relax! Enjoyed the video. People should just wear what they, but if you want comfort, go square or round!

The first cowboy boots had a tapered square to as jetmobile stated. The also had a tall (around 2”) heel with a spur shelf. The shaft was also tall, somewhere around 18”. And the top of the shaft was even all the way around. No cuts as modern day boots have. Every part of the cowboy boot was designed for a specific purpose.

revisiting this after I just bought 2 square toe boots the Boulet 6266 and Double H bison boots.
My thing with square toe boots is the extra toe room is very welcomed and just allows for more options for sure and reduces the risk of rubbing or crushing my toes. However, I tend to stay away from the wide wide square toes and while companies will market their square toes as wide there are def differences. I like to think of it as a spade square toe vs a slight taper square toe which is what i see the Boulet and the double H as. Also, the way the welts are done IMO affects the look. Some double stitch welts make the boot look even bigger than it is. I usually shoot for boots with a single stitch welt but if the toe looks good as in not super wide I will get it with the square toe double stitch like the double H's.

Jeremiah, I'm CERTAIN square toed boots (I call them Frankenstein boots) are more comfortable. I just can't go there, and doubt I'll be able to. I'm too much into what looks good to me and "tradition". That's why I like buckaroo style boots with a medium round toe, tall tops, and 2"+ heels (Olathe, and your Hondo 2012, 2670, 8504 and 8506 for example). I'm not a working cowboy, but have always liked traditional cowboy stuff. You're right - the whole reason more pointed toes were developed was so the rider could more easily shoot his foot into the oxbow stirrup. Half (medium) round toes were easier to walk in than super pointed ones. The big heels kept your foot from slipping through the stirrup and you getting drug to death. Those boots were made for RIDING, and most old cowboys hated walking in them. Kind of like women in high heeled shoes. Everyone has switched to low heels and square toes. If comfort is the main concern, why didn't we just stick with ropers? Kind of the same thing isn't it? Anyway, that's just me - to each his own....🙂

I used to drive cattle to the market about 25 years ago. Most of the drivers wore boots out of the truck. And sandals inside the truck.
The cattle were in 60-80 lb boxes. So many drivers wore safety toe boots.
Back in the 70's I rode a motorcycle for commuting. I preferred the sqaure toe harness boot for toe room and a taller boot over the calve. I would have bought the riding boots that went over the knee. But I didn't make that much back then. And when I lived on my sister and brother in laws horse ranch. I wore rubber boots, to deal with all the muck!
Today, I have the budget to own all types of boots for work or at home. I have both square and round composite safety toe and regular soft toe. I usually were Keen sandals when not on the job or working on my property. But always carry some kind of boot when driving one of my trucks. Because the side off the road can be very hazardous.

I have a pair that kind of look like the ones with the Thin Red Line flag(I'm a firefighter/medic who now works in the pipefitting industry) that I bought for my wedding 3 years ago(I married a horse trainer's daughter who barrel raced in her teenage years) that I wear for special occasions. They are polished up so much I can wear a suit or tux with them.

I just bought my first pair of boots and when I was at the store I couldn't decide on a tapered square or round. I had in my head square toe but actually seeing them on me they looked more like work boots and less feminine to me. I decided on the round toe. I have very small and skinny feet so I don't think I'll have a problem with toe space. It's only been a day and I'm still trying to break them in but so far so good. I still would eventually want to get a tapered square toe and rock the look. :)

I'm in the saddle at least 5 day's a week, have been for many years. I wear Ariat square toe boots, size 11EE. When your sitting in the saddle 3-4 hours a day, the blood in your legs has a tendency to settle in your feet. It's nice having the wider toe cavity to allow your toes to spread out more. As for the ease of getting your feet in the stirrups easier, if you ride enough that's not even an issue. Wear what's comfortable. Believe me, your horse will notice if your in a bad mood if your feet hurt, and will usually act accordingly.

I live in West Texas and have square toe boots which I love and I get constant compliments on them (though I prefer round toe). However, what I don't like is that square toe boots (at least here) are the only thing I can buy in store. My city has 7 western clothing stores and in all of them 95% of the boots on the shelf are square toe. Maybe you're right and Texas just has an affinity for square toe boots, but it is pretty annoying.

They have the 7 Toe (or Western Square Toe. Think medium round, but squared for right at the tip) with a 1-1/2” Cowboy Heel. The leather is grey Sanded Shark. They remind me of the old Clint Eastwood Spaghetti Westerns. Love ‘em.

After many years not wearing cowboy boots, I recently got a pair of all leather boots with the square toe. I preferred the narrow square but could not find any in my price range. Add to that -- I've owned block-toe motorcycle boots before and liked the look. The cowboy square toe is similar in my view. So, I committed to a pair. Wearing them, I can say they look all right. Manly, definitely the cowboy look in every other respect. Mine have the lower heel which I guess is called a "roper heel" (?). I want to wear them extensively and felt that the taller heel would impede that. Long story short -- I expect to keep them. They are pretty cool and comfortable. Now I have to slather all that leather with shoe conditioner -- because these boots have some heavy-duty breaking in yet to happen!

Compete in ranch rodeo events, including annually at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, won my share of buckles and saddles. Can ride confidently in bare feet, sandals, combat boots (I’m a veteran) or just about anything. Yes square toes are superior in comfort, have three pair of Anderson Bean’s. A real COWBOY doesn’t care about fashion or trends, Wranglers and Pearl Snaps hang in my closet. From head to toe a cowboy is all about utility. Boots are a piece of equipment, plain and simple. A place to mount my spurs and protection from the elements. Just like the sidearm on my hip, knife in my pocket and bandanna (scarf) around my neck. Happy Trails Y’all.

My main complaint on any cowboy boots is that many manufacture's no longer offer the narrow widths like B. No one carries them in the store anymore. Hondo and Ariat , and others have left me high and dry. They say just add an extra cushion sole. Well that sucks, and is not a true fit. Been wearing boots 60+ years. The square toe is also more awkward walking in tall grass. Narrower toes help part the grass, making it less tiring.

I grew up in a suburban town that was attached to a major city. My childhood was grounded in good country music (thanks Mom) and going out to the country to stay at my grandparents. I wore cowboy hats for portrait pics and walking around out in the country. I loved the style, but I knew in my high school located in suburbia, I'd be made fun of for dressing that way, so I never did. Say what you want, but the high school social climate matters to over 90% of kids and it did to me too. So I settled with dressing for the times. My high school was mainly Abercrombie, Hollister, Ecko and fubu, mixed with a little punk rock (and no, I didn't wear that stuff lol). Now that I'm 37, watching Yellowstone reignited my love for the western fashion and memories I grew up on. Being married and no longer giving a damn about what people think, I've bought a couple cowboy hats and have purchased a couple of square toe boots as well. Super comfortable and man I love wearing this stuff. I feel.... at home. Thanks for being real and I know, I'm late as hell to this video lol. You got a sub outta me friend. Keep up the good work.
