Super big fan! Keep up the good work! Was wondering if you ever thought about doing a video on incredbly consistent players in baseball. Such as Kyle Seager consistently hitting 20 homers a season, or Davis hitting .247 4 years in a row in Oakland...stuff like that. As always, love the videos!
2:35 i wish you would've at least mentioned Matt Bush a HS SS who went #1overall couldn't hit, got switched to a pitcher then did 3 YEARS IN JAIL for running over a 70yr old mans head while drunk! Then (because he was on house arrest) tried out for the rangers in a Golden Corral parking lot and could still throw damn near 100 and finally made the majors at like 30
WOW. I knew about Bush's run-in with law enforcement due to the drunk driving incident, but I never knew that he started out as a failed shortstop. There truly is more to every story than you could possibly imagine.
Another fun draft draft story including an MLB player (but not the MLB draft) is that Tom Glavine is one of three hall-of-famers drafted by the Los Angeles Kings. Glavine was actually drafted ahead of both Luc Robitaille and Brett Hull. Never actually played in the NHL though.
I thought I'd see a story about some draft pick the Expos made in 1995 of some California high school player who didn't play pro baseball but went to U of Michigan to be on their quarterback depth chart. Whatever happened to him? 😃
Ironically in the video the Expos drafted other player in 71 draft. He turn out be a good CFL quarterback Condredge Holloway. He played with CFL Toronto Argonauts in the early 80's.
0:46 And had that rule not changed, the Mariners would have had the top pick in 2009 as they had the worst record in 2008, and the worst AL team got the pick in odd number years, so they could've gotten Strasburg had the rule not changed.
In 1992 the Mariners, finished with the worst record in the American League. So like they did in 1987, the first overall pick pick was waiting for them. Last time they rolled the dice on a 17 year old and it worked out, so they did it again. He was a shortstop and quarterback at a private school in Miami who go down as the greatest hitting shortstop and the greatest hitting third baseman of all time. His name was Alex Rodriguez.
As a pirates fan I had NO IDEA we actually had a chance to get ken griffrey. Just imagine if we had Griffey van slyke and bonds in the same outfield. Especially in the early 90s we could have won more World Series. And like you said we actually had a worse record than the mariners that year. Crazy
Did it seem weird that Condry and Phelps were 5 rounds apart, but only 9 picks apart? Was that the expansion year for TB? Filling up the minors with 90 rounds of picks? Something there puts an asterick on those late round MLBers
At the time, teams could draft as many players as they wanted, so most teams would have stopped by that point. The Yankees actually took the draft to Round 100.
My brother dislocated his shoulder sliding back to first base his first year on a non little league field because he was used to bags that weren’t pegged into the ground. Surprised it doesn’t happen more often.
I think that’s a mistake he was on the Phillies 40 man roster in spring 2017 but was designated for assignment and took a few years off. He’s back in their farm system and is playing well enough that he could get called up as a reliever this year, but as of yet he’s never played an MLB game.
When he said “they actually sat one spot behind the Pittsburgh Pirates” I think he meant they sat one spot behind them for last place aka 1st draft pick.
If you study injury rates you reasonably can conclude that it is not the best idea to draft high school catchers or second basemen. Drafting a high school pitcher? Hah.
Mariners existence has been pushed to the limit many times
The Blue Jays as tribute drafted Roy Halladay's son Braden in 32nd round in 2019.
Was just about to comment the same thing

Those names have been put in my notepad before, but for different reasons. Thanks for watching!

I didn't even know that Griffey story! (I doubt I would've been a M's fan if he wasn't drafted)
Surprised it didn't get even a brief mention on Dorktown
Im sorry that he did get dragted there then LOL
i’m a mariners fan too! and don’t worry abt my profile pic bc that team is poverty and doesn’t deserve to be in the MLB after this past month! 😃🔫
You poor soul
Loved this video!! Love draft content, can't wait for the draft!

Lol he did suck in college and the expos folded for a reason, always trying to sign 2 sport athletes 😀
Obviously you just did a Mariners video but I think it’d be awesome to see a Yusei Kikuchi video about his turnaround. He’s been great.
Your comment didn’t age well

Ouch. Imagine getting Dustin Ackley instead of Stephen Strasburg because of a rule that dumb
Missing out on Strasburg and placing all hopes in Dustin Ackley is the most Mariners thing ever
2009 was the Mike Trout draft so they didn't even get the best player regardless

I see Dorktown

Great research
was not expecting to see Yankees pitching coach Mike Harkey in this video
Matt Blake is the pitching coach mike Harley is in the bullpen
I'm just curious, where did you get that statistic that says 1 in 200 HS seniors gets drafted?
Did it seem weird that Condry and Phelps were 5 rounds apart, but only 9 picks apart? Was that the expansion year for TB? Filling up the minors with 90 rounds of picks? Something there puts an asterick on those late round MLBers

Yep, that was TB/ARI's first draft.

Trae Griffey actually plays slow pitch softball now for a team out of Massachusetts
I mean technically there are 2 other first overall picks (to my knowledge) to never make it. Brady Aiken and Mark Appel
Riley Pint
@@aidensones was he a number 1 pick?
Oh, I thought you meant first round
Funny how the Astros tanked in those years and only wound up with Correa as a top 10 pick. They did get Bregman afterwards
I see we're forgetting Mark Appel. First overall pick by the Astros, never made it.
Us Astros fans also like to forget that happened as well
I think he was left out because he’s attempting a comeback. I got to see him pitch a bunch this year in Reading and Lehigh Valley
5:19 uhhh Ohtani wasn’t drafted if I remember correctly so he went undeafted…
He is considered international not undrafted
International prospects aren't eligible for the first year player's draft
@@mharp8090 but we wasn’t drafted… therefore he was un drafted.
It is a joke after all

Hey.... What about mark appel???
Rangers pitcher Taylor Hearn was drafted 4-5 times. Can’t remember the exact number.
Looks like 4 times
Great youtuber.
How would I go about evaluating Ohtanis JAWs rating?
Herrington sounds like the baseball version of jay berwanger
What about mark Appel? He was taken 1st overall and never made it
He could still make it though as he is in Triple A with the Phillies
@@elifricke3807 he's no an entrepreneur anymore?
@@seijibott8629 he’s attempting a comeback
Mariners got lucky by drafting Griffey Jr., who would go on to have a hall of fame career!
damn i didnt know mark appel ended up making the big leagues (#1 draft pick in 2013)
I think that’s a mistake he was on the Phillies 40 man roster in spring 2017 but was designated for assignment and took a few years off. He’s back in their farm system and is playing well enough that he could get called up as a reliever this year, but as of yet he’s never played an MLB game.
Why does Todd Van Poppel kinda look like Matt Chapman?
Hey sportsstorm small error at :45 the Mariners were one spot ahead of the pirates
When he said “they actually sat one spot behind the Pittsburgh Pirates” I think he meant they sat one spot behind them for last place aka 1st draft pick.
How the hell is Griffy the first #1 overall pick to be in the hall
If you haven’t watched the butterfly effect series go watch them all…now.
When are they moving back to 40 rounds because 5 rounds isn’t enough
Its 20 rounds
Mark Appel, the number 1 overall pick in 2013 has never made the big leagues and there is a good chance he doesn't either.
Brady Aiken the next season as well
Mark Appel was drafted number 1 over Kris Bryant and never made it to the big by leagues
If you study injury rates you reasonably can conclude that it is not the best idea to draft high school catchers or second basemen. Drafting a high school pitcher? Hah.
Harrington; classic case of greed.
I have a mike Harkey rookie card
Doesn’t count if player doesn’t sign.
Of course it does, they lose the pick
