When Ren says “retake” he means it is a cover. “Back on 74” is originally by Jungle and “Message in a Bottle” is by Police. So he didn’t write those lyrics. But the rap interlude was cheeky Ren 😼 He loves paying tribute to songs and artists that inspire him.
From Ren’s BTS - he put this entire project together in 10 days when he was back in the UK for the holidays last year. The first full rehearsal with Scarlett Fae and Sylvia - the lovely ladies - was 2 days before filming. And the bassist is Kai, the Kool Kat 😎, who played the part of Kujo in the Kujo Beat Down video.

Retakes and covers are different things tho. In a retake the original might even not be recognizable as opposed to covers. Every cover os a retake but not every retake is a cover.

    • @GarnetJ
      @GarnetJ หลายเดือนก่อน +6

@@1individeo I was using it in a broad term … yes, it’s a retake not a cover since it’s a mashup with his own original section incorporated, which I clearly outlined. I was mostly trying to clarify for him that there isn’t another “official version” from Ren that he missed … which he was asking for clarification.

I will go out on a limb and say, yes, Ren is the greatest artist of all time. He does what he does without spending all the money that is and was splurged on building up mainstream musicians, and at the same time he is battling serious health issues. Ren doesn’t even start on a level playing field, and (in my opinion) is heads and shoulders above all other artists, past and present.

52 here. Grew up on Dolly Parton and Doc Watson, got into The Police, Bad Brains, The Clash, Sinead, Bowie, The Pogues, too much to mention. Got seriously into hip hop in my late 40s, after years of not being very excited about any new music I heard. Over the last few years, that has changed, largely because of Tyler Childers, Eminem, Ren, Billy Strings, RMR, and you might shit a brick, but Lil Nas X. I haven't been this excited about music in a long time.
And i see a lot of similarities between Ren and Sting. A lot but not only in the vocals and the bass playing (gotta say Ren frankly smokes Sting as a lyricist, though. I love Sting but lyrically, Ren's got him.)
Definitely a once-in-a-generation talent, at least.

There isn't another version. When Ren says retake, he is either doing a mashup of covers, or rapping over the beat of a song he likes. He has several of them. This is by far my favorite. It's a mashup of Back On 74 by Jungle and Message In A Bottle by The Police, with a rap by Ren in the middle. By the way, the cool guy on the bass is Kai Lacey from Ren's team. He shaved his head to play Kujo in Kujo Beat Down.

The lyrics for Message in a Bottle were written by Sting. The original song is by The Police (the amazing band Sting was in). I'm sure you've heard Sting sing before, but if you haven't you really need to check out the original version of this song and you'll understand. Sting was a brilliant lyrcist as well and I believe a great inspiration for Ren.
'Massive like Jungle' is likely to be Ren giving kudos to the band who sung Back on 74 originally, ie Jungle (quite a new song whereas The Police are from the 80s btw). It might also be a double bc in the 90s (Ren's era), Jungle is Massive was a really famous tune (I freaking love it btw...check it out also), in fact Jungle is a whole genre of music in case you weren't aware.
I cant believe you put Ren up there with MJ, Prince and the rest; that is a statement and a half!!! 😮 But I love it! Ren is a Jack of all Trades and a Master of them All. He puts 200% in everything he does and deserves you accolades. I believe you are well and truly a Ren Stan 😅❤

“Massive Like Jungle” is a double yes but I very much doubt it has anything to do with Nas’ brother. First of all it is obviously yes a shout back to the band Jungle, no disputing that.
But secondly the phrase “The Junglist Massive“ was a hugely used and popular phrase in the U.K. back in the early 90’s. Referring to people who were into D & B/jungle music.
A phrase often used by artists and fans - it was used a lot by people like General Levy - “Wicked, wicked Junglist Posse” etc. It was pretty much an everyday phrase for a period.

I had my Jodeci phase, Tupac/Biggie phase, Stan (Em) phase, Outcast (NF) phase and now I'm a lifetime Renegade and Chillibean lol.
As others have said he just does these Retakes/Mashups for the love of the music/artists or idea, only on youtube because of fair use etc.
They are juicy bonuses for us fans and we love it.

Man you get it now. Ren is just different with his versatility and vision. He's not part of any race other than soul story telling musical experience genius.
But yes you're right about everything. We all are thinking the same thing.
Wait until you go deeper into the hole. Tracks like Heretic, insomnia, hold on... dude this man.
As for us watching it and vibing with it... I'm pretty sure what we RENegades do with Ren drops is watch them once and then hop on the reaction channel to see everyone else have a similar reaction to what we just had to it. To share in the fun!
Also the vast majority of us Renegades are older and super versed in most of the genres of music. I'm into genres and artists that are all everywhere on the spectrum. EDM/Hip Hop/Folk/Americana/country/rock/Alternative/Electronic/Industrial/goth/Punk/Metal. you name it. At least from my era.
I may not know everyone who is out now. but from 1980 thru 2010 I was on my game and I still listen to over 300 new songs a month.

The police are a very big influence of Ren's..

Ren isn't the greatest rapper, guitarist, singer, bassist, beat maker, lyricist, director, or performer, but he's in the discussion of every one of those talents. Add to that, he truly seems to be a genuinely good person. He probably would've been a great dancer too, but some time had to be dedicated to taking care of his health.

For me Ren is the greatest! I always have loved listening music, but never before have loved every single song and I have never bothered to know every song, video, song name ...everything about an artist before Ren! I like all kind of music, didn't like very much rap or hip hop I am more into rock but now I like rap and hip hop too if it's Ren who sing it! Before Ren I had only Facebook and I didn't use it very often but now I have all the social media that I can think of and that is so I can follow him on them (I feel like a stalker)😅

    1. Jungle is the name of the group who originally did Back On 74
    2. Ren always puts the lyrics in either the description or in a pinned comment.
    3. The dude playing the bass guitar is the one who played Kujo in Kujo Beatdown
This is my 2nd favorite Ren song of all time.

I will have to check you playlists. Not sure you have yet heard Ren's retake/mashup of Fred Again. More singing and guitar, if you are not familiar with those songs (and I was not) they still will move you. He took different songs and parts of them to express himself. A couple had me in tears. He was in Canada when that was done.

Lmao "Informer" - was a great song! Nostalgia! Totally stuck in my head now 😊
Rens Retakes are the original works with his changes over top. In this case it is also a Mashup of 2 songs with his own original rap to bridge them together.
Ren will definitely have meant all the lyrics to shout out Nas & Jungle. He is a student of music and dbl or triple meanings. The Jungle is a dbl too as this 74 track is originally by a group called Jungle.
FYI- a guillotine is the mechanical invention used by tons of governments, predominantly the French and English, to chop off people's heads at public executions. A LOT of royalty and upper class went under the guillotine. 15,000-17,000 people alone lost their heads during the French revolution - SO Ren has been getting A LOT of head hahahaha.
