To me; a 1911 is a cultural traditional weapon. It’s to Americans what the katana is to the Japanese. All gun owners should own one for ceremonial purposes (BBQ’s, etc)
I did a similar thing years ago with my dad, who was 70 at the time, and wanted a self-defense handgun. He qualed as expert in the Navy with a 1911 but that was back in the 60’s hadn’t shot handguns much since. Had him shoot several handguns; Springfield 1911 Loaded, Glock 23, Sig 229, S&W M&P 9, Glock 17, S&W 686 6”. He ended up going with the M&P 9 because it was easiest for him with his diminished hand strength from arthritis. The big takeaway is that the best thing to do for new shooters is to have them try several guns to see what works best for them.
I've said the same thing to multiple new shooters. I've even offered to take them to the range & let them shoot my handguns as well as rent "everything". DO NOT buy what "that guy" tells you to. Shoot them all & make your decision from there.
Could be it wasn't just a case of age and arthritis, but he just thought the MP9 was just a better piece in his eyes. I want to be absorbed into the Glock but every time I handle one at the store counter I get repulsed by the awkward grip angle. Why would I buy something I do not like the feel of just because someone from the cult told me too?
@@williamryan9195, I get the same feeling for the same reason. I have some experience with 80% builds & some Glock clones. I have shot real Glocks as well. Can I shoot them effectively? Yes. Do I LOVE my S&W handguns more? ABSOLUTELY! 🤣
@@williamryan9195 I always thought the same thing. The Glock grip angle is terrible. Then I handled a Polymer 80 frame and loved it. They are more of a 1911 grip angle and also have excellent stippling/texturing. Then I bought a gen 3 Glock 19 and put the parts into a Polymer 80 frame. It's perfect now. That may be something you want to look into.
There's not a lot wrong with Glocks -- other than the terrible sights and abysmal triggers. Once you fix those, they're passable, if you can ignore the mediocre accuracy.
@@starboy3735 I could consistently hit a 12" gong offhand from 100 yards with my model 19 S&W and 125 grain JHP handloads. Do you really think that your plastic-framed Glock can do that? I don't. The lousy trigger pull guarantees it. And before you start flapping your gums, I started serious pistol shooting at 12, and was doing structured drills at 14. I literally wore that model 19 out and replaced it with a model 66.

Always love listening to Clint as he is a no BS kind of guy! This is a straight up great vid of these two platforms and I agree with the pro’s and con’s of each platform. I’m a 54 year old gun guy that has had at one time or another had most of the major manufacturers designs and my conclusions are similar,.. love my 1911 , feels best in hand the trigger is sweet and just running the slide on a good one makes me feel warm inside! However , carrying maintaining and overall out of the box performance a G19 size polymer ( Glock/ M&P/ Sig M18) is my choice for carry for a SHTF handgun. Either way you are well equipped if your 1911/Glock is well vetted and you are trained with it. Great vid!

@@cutlerylover I have heard that Glock is VERY strict with their sponsorships and other PR programs. Quite a few gun reviewers lost their "review copy" privilege when the Glock 44 came out and they showed it failing.
5:20 I have found that new shooters seem to flinch way more when shooting at the end booth next to a wall. I was teaching someone to use an AR15 recently, and I found myself jumping every time she pulled the trigger, despite knowing when the shot was about to go off. Being next to a wall really increases the sharpness of the sound, and it makes a big difference no matter how good your ear protection is.

I own both a 1911 and Glock. I carry both (different times) and can operate both. It's not the gun as long as it works, it's the bone head behind it. It's far better to practice tactics, trade or field craft, and skill than spend a bunch of money and zero time at the range.
I see where ya got the jawline - sweet to see the way you spend time together, and I enjoyed the same things that she did when beginning shooting - the sense of there being a lot to learn, the mental aspect, the sense of continuous improvement... great vid!
I feel about 1911's the same way I feel about cars. I love old stick shift, carbureted, classic cars/trucks. I appreciate the old tech, classic lines and beauty of that old iron. They are fun to work on, and take out for a cruise now and then but I'm probably not going to use one as my daily driver or especially for long trips on a regular basis. The newer boring, plain Jane, Toyota Camry isn't much fun to drive and definitely isn't going to turn any heads but when I need to get from point A to point B reliably, I'll pick that car over the classic every time. In a nutshell, I appreciate the 1911's and they are super fun to take to the range now and then but for my money, the Glock would be the gun on my side on a daily basis.

I have the heavier Officer's ACP, and I have to admit that it has been to the farm with me late at night more than once. I use regular 7 round mags for the extra shot. That lighter Commander in 9mm sounds like a hoot; I have to try one! --Old Guy
As Clint said, if you are going to carry that bulky frame (lightweight 1911 is relative), why drop to the lighter caliber? If you are shooting 9mm, get a polymer gun. Makes zero sense.
@@Gates54 conceal ability of single stacks. I’m a hobbit so chunky wide grips don’t conceal all that great for summer carry, my Springfield EMP with its Bob tail though conceals very well. Could be that I just need to find better holsters, but until I figure that out, a 9mm 1911 like the emp is great. Also helps the emp has a smaller grip size than traditional 1911s
Im 6' 185. I carry a 1911 fullsize iwb every single day. Very rarely do i swap out for a smaller gun but sometimes its a necessity, when working or whatever.

Star PD .45ACP was my favorite carry for years. More accurate than any Colt I owned , never malfunctioned and light weight. I wish they still made them.
I just picked up a Walther PDP Conpact. It felt right from the start. I’m really digging it and it shoots spectacularly. I’m going to figure out a good holster system for it. For its size, it is really light. It is a good compromise of traits. So well designed.
My wife shot Glock, sig, and a 1911. She chose the 1911. She loves the trigger. Ended up with a Dan Wesson Commander. The best pistol is the one you shoot the best.
Your wife has great taste! Dan Wesson makes incredible 1911s. I have a DW Specialist and it felt like I was putting the bullets on target with my mind the trigger is so buttery smooth. I just really, really love how 1911s feel in my hand and the trigger on 1911s in general can't be beat. I usually CCW a g19 but that's honestly because it's just more concealable. At the end of the day carry what works best for you is what I say!

@@astang1072 We went to the range, rented guns (except my 1911) and bought ammo. And I let her go at it…. My wife will never, ever, take a 2 day pistol course. Not her thing. It’s amazing she finally decided to buy a pistol. We have property and she shoots her pistol there. Her operation and aim is getting much better.
@@Cumlordcasa correct. A Taurus G3, or G3c, depending on the occasion (although I find myself rarely carrying the G3C). It's a great pistol, with excellent reliability, and great ergonomics for a low cost. I also appreciate a manual safety, because I'm not law enforcement or former military.
@@Cumlordcasa The G2s was really the gun that put Taurus back on the map aside from revolvers. It's a great gun. I just got the G3c because it's the same pistol, but the newer model that fits in the same holster as the G3. Unfortunately, I have XXL hands. It makes shooting the G3c very difficult. I'm also a big guy, so it's easy for me to carry the G3 everywhere. I love the G3. I probably could have gotten an S&W M&P of the same size for $50 more on sale, in retrospect. That said, I think the G3 will eat more ammo than an M&P without a failure.
@@Cumlordcasa I carry my G3c in those rare situations when I can't wear clothing for the G3. For me, in the summer, I can put the G3c in the pocket of a pair of cargo shorts.
I carried my Springfield 1911 Government model on duty for about 10 years until I was told I had to go to a department issued weapon. I've probably fired 7-8k rounds through it. I'm sure I've had a failure at one time or other with it, but they were so rare I can't recall any if them.
Yeah, Springfield makes some of the best non-custom/semi-custom/ high end 1911s out there. My first 1911 was a Springfield Operator in .45(because despite me being a 9mm guy, there was no way my first 1911 was going to be anything other than a 5" in .45.)
I carry a 1911. Never jams as long as it's lubed and maintained same as a AR15. The glocs and other polymer guns just felt too light for me. It's all about what you are comfortable to shoot with. Not any one gun fits everybody. This just my opinion. Also, Connie should learn to ride the safety with her thumb. Helps with the recoil and you next shot lining up faster.
If you choose Glock over the 1911, I want you to remember this one thing...American to American...Glock was the ONLY major player against the Assault Weapons Ban in the early 90's, and Colt agreed with the bill. Glock...please make a Glock 11.
Force Multiplier That's the reason I will never own a Colt. I have a lot of 1911-2011 handguns. Unless someone gives me a Colt I will never own one. One of the first handguns I had was a Colt 1911 and it was junk. Don't forget Bill Ruger also told Congress that no ones needs more than 10 rounds when they asked him leading up to the ban.

I've shot Glocks and most striker fired pistols and I don't have a problem with them, they are excellent firearms. However (Comma) I'm in my late 50's and I have a touch of arthritis and the trigger pull of the 1911 just works better for me. I have no problem with the manual safety, nor the grip safety. The trigger on a quality 1911 is great. Carry or use whatever you like (God Bless America) but for me and many others the 1911 was designed right.
@@tidefanyankee2428 I agree, I am 60 and my eye are dim and my reflexes are not close to what they where. I own a large number of guns as I retired a few years ago and started back pow pow again. I have a number of Glocks and P 80s. Had I never had a well tuned 1911 - 2011 all would be well. There's something about a well tuned 1911-2011 trigger that on other gun can touch. [IMO] I carry a Sig 365 XL because of the size and the really hot summer days here in Florida. Glocks are good guns but {IMO} far from the best. Through the years I have carried many other guns. All in all I go back to old faithful 1911 when I can.

I'd also add that perhaps the fact that both the FBI HRT and Delta/CAG switched from 1911s to Glocks says a lot about which gun is the better fighting tool for most users, all things considered. And as an economist I couldn't agree more with Clint's answer in 14:09. In a world of limited resources, the Glock design is more often than not the most efficient use of money, for both the end user and Gaston's private jet fleet :)

I think it says more about the newer philosophy of use of handguns and the better choices of ammo now available for 9mm. That is like saying the AR/M4/M16 is a better fighting tool than the M14. If I had to pick up a rifle and get one shot on a bad guy it would be the 7.62 M14 all day long. If I have to hump a rifle up and down the mountains, I want an AR/M4/M16.

The Glock is easier to shoot proficiently than a 1911 is. The Glock is far more reliable. The fact the it holds twice as many rounds and is still lighter is simple extra. Price need not even be a consideration.
For a long time the 1911 was the shit if you didn’t want a revolver and in the late 80’s-90’s the Glock was the ticket. Luckily in 2022 there are other options that are as good or better than both the 1911 and Glock. What it comes down to is what works best for you and what you are willing to carry and use.
Still nothing better than a Glock IMO. I know there are guns with smaller frames that fit more rounds but if you just want one SHTF gun with parts everywhere, mags everywhere, endless mods, and light weight, they're still king. By miles.
@@chicomalo4862 The best gun in the current state of the world is different than the best gun when there is no state at all to the world and its all just hell break loose lol walther ppq and walther pdp are both better than a glock in terms of ergos and trigger, czp10c is just as reliable and has a better trigger also, beretta apx is nothing to sleep on top competitor with any pistol, SW M&P is just as good as glock in literally everything including availability being almost as good for parts and such, the HK USP has lots of weight and is old but is just as reliable as a glock against dirt and mud and is accurate and reputable as a glock so yea there are lots of great options that kicks a glocks ass. I love the glock 23 (40) and glock 32 in 357 sig and the glock 21 is probably the best 45 ever, and I would probably choose a glock for end of world BUT ONLY BECAUSE OF PARTS AVAILABLE BECAUSE THERE ARE MANY PISTOLS THAT ARE BETTER.
I prefer a Walther P99 or H&k vp9 if I’m going plastic I don’t like Glock for the simple fact that they “Austria” took Germany’s polymer H&k vp 70 design and striker system and made it some cheap ugly crap and now all Americans are eating it up like a Toyota Camry or a Chevy equinox. I get it it works….it’s not classy though lol says common man status I prefer to stand out with anything I own when I hear Glock I think average.
The only thing I change on my Glocks are the sites and everything else stays completely stock. I bought a gen 2 g19 that was a police trade in around the mid 90’s and other than replacing a few parts that wear over time (with oem parts of course) I’ve never had any problems with it and shot thousands of rounds through it and it’s still going strong to this day.
For me personally, there have been a few handguns that chose me. The IWI Jericho, the 1911, the Walther PDP Compact, and the Beretta 92FS (so far). Bottom line, I like Glocks and if a Glock 19 was given to me and I could only have that as a lifetime handgun, I could learn to love it. I LOVE 1911s (in 45 or 9mm) I love the way they handle, the way they point, etc. If I was given a 1911 as my lifetime pistol I would be happy with that being my do-all pistol.
@@Irish_Hooligan The supernatural pointability of 1911 comes from the whole design, not just the grip angle alone. And a CZ75 or a clone like Tanfoglio in 9mm or even 10mm is better then 1911. For actual target shooting the grip angle is best to be as angled as posible, even more angled then Glock has, so as to block the wrist in line with the forearm when recoiling, and Glock handle is more straight then that as a double compromise, one reason being to have reliable feeding with diferent bullets, and the other reason to be not that diferent compared to other contemporary guns. Luger P08 has a more angled handle, and the Steyr M9 unveiled in 1999 also has a more angled handle, and so are most real target pistols from top brands like Pardini, Morini, Anschutz, etc., and even russian ones like Margolin.
Still one of my favorite videos because it contains my two favorite guns the 1911 and the Glock. They both have a great reputations. I love firearms especially the great ones. I also happen to think Clint Smith is one of the most upfront and honest gun guys I’ve listened to over the years. He tells it like it is with a style all his own. Great video James and I think we should make it point to bring as many women , moms , daughters , sister and so on , into the gun community. This is something they could benefit from as well. Over the years, I've owned several 1911s and several Glocks. I like both of them. I currently own one of each and carry each of them. Some times the Glock, sometimes the 1911 and feel comfortable with with either. And sometimes, when small size is important, I carry either a Springfield Armory 911 in nine millimeter or a snub nose revolver in .38 special. At the end of the day, it comes down to carrying a firearm that you know is reliable and also being able to shoot said gun effectively.
Me too. But weight is a factor. So I bought and carry a Browning 1911 380 Black Label. It's 20% smaller than a full size 1911 and a lot lighter. Yet, it has all the features of the 1911. I love it and shot it at several Back Up Gun (BUG) matches with good results. I know, I'm a woos for shooting a 380 but ammo has come a long way.
I’m the same way. No hate towards the Glock, but I much prefer the 1911 platform. They fit my hands perfectly and when it comes to handguns comfort is a big factor to me
I thought the dude at the range said the Glock was "adorable" and I thought it was Fudd status confirmed. Took me a minute to figure out he was saying "durable."
I really enjoyed this. I have a Glock 22(gen 2), and a 1911 in .38 Super (among other stuff). The Glock was my duty carry for 5+ years, and a daily carry for a while after. I love it. I also love my 1911. It's my Sunday Go To Meetin Gun. I'd be interested in you getting Clint Smith back on and discussing the Indiana mall shooting, and exactly how frigging amazing the shooting was by that Hero Elisjsha Dicken (I agree with Colion Noir, he's a hero not a Good Samaritan).
Any video with Clint is a good video! He's like the Chuck Norris of gun realities. He's seen it all and the way he presents any reasonable argument that someone could launch against his logic for his opinion is impressive.
I love shooting the 1911 but as far as carrying one I'm not comfortable with it. I ended up carrying a CZ 75 it's the best of both worlds much more comfortable carrying on a double action trigger pull and I still get a beautiful single action trigger pull like a 1911. Plus I can get the capability of a Glock capacity wise.
@@StewieStew820 I've been checking out aftermarket triggers. I'm on the fence about it though seems pretty hard to find an enhanced action upgrade for an IWI Jericho specifically. Whether everything for a CZ or tangfolio will work inside a Jericho is up in the air.
@@chitterlingsrtasty lol I wish CZ mags are more expensive than 1911 or Glock. There's a trade off for everything. I did see that Alpha Foxtrot is making a double stack 1911 that actually does use the Glock magazines yesterday. They are a bit pricey though 1300$ is above what I would personally spend on something that only sees the range. Like I said I'm just not comfortable carrying a 1911 how it should be carried. My job is a bit rough on guns and the last 1911 I had most of the time I spent finding that the manual safety had been bumped off without me physically doing so.

Nice job James. Im 68 and a 1911 fan, but I own 8 Glocks in a variety of size and calibers and 6 1911s in 45 ACP and a variety of sizes. Clint is correct, 1911s are not for everyone And (my opinion) whether Glock or 1911 Most malfunctions are Operator error and or weapon modifications. Glocks are more forgiving of poor or no maintenance for sure. Training thousands of LEOs over a 25 year period we had many failures with the Glock and 99% were caused by "limp wristing." Never seen a limp wrist failure shooting a revolver 😙
No limp wrist, they just short stroke the trigger and skip a cylinder. When teaching new shooters I always load 1 round to see how they handle it before we move on. So when they short stroke the trigger on a double action pull, they hear a click instead of boom.
I don't know why others have problems with 1911s. After my 1911 was broke in, I've never had a single malfunction ever. And I've put thousands of rounds through it over the years. It also has aftermarket parts too.
I hate to be captain obvious here, but people who don’t have problems with the 1911, stock or not, probably clean them like they should and lubricate them properly. There are a myriad of reasons why a gun will stovepipe, failure to fire, failure to feed, failed to return to battery fail to eject etc. Usually the problem is between the gun and the ground. When it’s not that, it’s usually because the owner needs to be cleaned and/or lubricated properly. I shoot competition with a cult special combat government edition that is stock and I have never had a problem with it. I also shoot competition with 9 mm and I have only ever had two problems. Bad primers and Remington green box factory ammo. I love that ammo and it’s pretty much the only thing I shoot aside from my reloads. Just so you have an idea of the scope here we’re talking about over 10,000 rounds and I’m being modest with only two bad primers so please don’t think that I am knocking Remington ammunition. They are the best.
Every 1911 that I've seen malfunction, and there's been a lot of them, was modified from it's stock 5" configuration. And I'm a glock guy. Gov models will run well if treated well.
The biggest problems with the Glock are: bad ergonomics, bad trigger, bad sights. That's why I chose the CZ P-10: the Czechs pretty much copied the Glock design and it works the same way, simple and reliable, but they come from the factory with legendary CZ ergonomics, a smooth, crisp trigger that rivals the PPQ, and three-dot metal sights. For the same price.

The 1911 is the best looking handgun imo. It's got amazing history. It's fun to shoot. I own 3 and would buy more if money was no object and there weren't other guns I wanted as well. I carry a Glock 43 right now though. Thinking about changing to a Springfield Armory Hellcat Pro though.
The only time I ever had a failure to feed with a 1911 it was due to a magazine with a weak follower spring. I'm now very picky about 1911 mags. Only those with strong springs are picked for use.
My take on the 1911 has always been while I shoot them well, they handle really nicely, and they feel great in the hand, for the same size/weight I either want something with more rounds or something with more power on a round for round basis. Great examples, the Glock 19 is as Clint said... Lighter, more rounds, but more rounds doesn't mean you have to shoot them all off. Hell, even a Glock 21 is a good option if you want to stick with .45 ACP. In the case of more power, a S&W TR8 revolver is ounce for ounce nearly identical to most all steel A1 style 1911's unloaded. Fully loaded, it's often lighter due to ammunition weights, but nobody is going to be able to debate that .357 Magnum is more powerful than .45 ACP. Loaded up hot it's without question one of the most versatile handgun rounds out there but also has the luxury of being able to go super light with recoil on .38 Special. I like 1911's at the range, and while some lightweight models have good promise as carry guns they often are counter productive to what makes shooting the 1911 platform good. The removal of weight adds a lot of additional felt recoil which can be solved with a stiffer recoil spring, but it's still a relatively large gun and still close in weight to a G21. But, if you're a fan of the 1911 and shoot them really well, I suppose it would be a natural transition. TLDR: 1911 is good on the range but nearly any modern option is better for carry.
I dearly love my Springfield 1911a1. It was the first pistol I ever bought when I turned 21. I carried it for a decade. Then I bought a Glock 26 and have carried everyday since.
Shout out to the channel and the gun range. I work in Pensacola occasionally and the guys at the range are the best, and TFB is simply the best channel hands down….

@tonybranton I disagree. Revolvers are for trained professionals. Reloading and fixing malfunctions in a revolver is wizardry. A glock style pistol is easy.
The reason they say it's mispelled is because it's not worth spelling correctly. Glacks are gay AF and the fan boys are worse. No one cares if you run a glick. So does everyone else in the world. Stfu about it.
When I used to live in California, I couldn't afford a glock or a 1911, at the time so I bought a 92fs 11 years ago, to work as a armed security guard. I wanted the 1911 but, 11 year's later I want to get a 357 magnum as a back up gun, and a 1911 I'd carry every day.
Both are good guns. 1911s need a little more love to keep them running with high round counts. I like Glocks and my wife prefers slim gripped heavy 1911s. Nothing wrong with either, and LOL at the guy saying he saw a Glock catch on fire. It's been a long time since I've been in a gunshop and gotten to listen to their stories.
I absolutely adore 1911s. I shoot better with them, they feel great, they're absolutely awesome. My daily carry is a stock (aside from night sights) Gen 3 Glock 19. They work. Every time.
That's how I feel about 1911's.Loved the feel of them the first time you hold one in your hand but hate the high cost and the fact the you have to break them in,at least the cheaper ones.I to have a Glock 19 Gen4 with night sights and Never had a problem with it or any of the 3 magazines that came with it.
Well, that is the legend. More popular fiction that fact. I've seen many failures with Glocks. Anyone remember the chamber failures of the .40 cal Glocks? Glocks are very susceptible to limp wristing which is common with new shooters. And the elephant in the room is the Glock is a VERY unsafe for a new shooter. The lack of a real safety is a biggie. Yeah, it has a tab in the trigger and it can only go off if it is pulled. Wait, even though many other types of guns have no tab, don't you have to pull the trigger for the gun to fire? This is a Real safety? How? What I have never understood is the almost obsessive safety in shooting these days. (Such as being required to show the chamber is empty on TH-cam. Is the presenter going to shoot the viewers thru the computer screen? Really)? Yes it is very important. Extremely so. Yet over and over I hear instructors teach that an actual manual safety is a liability. Being more safe with a firearm is a liability? WTF??? Yeah, I know, the real safety is the mind. So you trust the mind of most of the public out there? Kinda naïve don't ya think? You may be exhausted, bad situation, rushed, do you always trust your actions completely. Does anyone? There is a good reason that the FBI labeled the Glock "The Toe Popper", and with the newer trend of appendix carry-hello!!! It is the very reason that Glocks are the number one returned new purchase by first time buyers to the store they purchased them from. They simply do not feel safe with the Glock. Oddly, in todays sue happy world, others Countries do require a real safety for Glocks purchased for their Law Enforcement uses as well as Military. But in our Sue happy Country, we do not. Odd to say the least! Only the Sig 320 has surpassed the Glock in AD's in Law Enforcements circles. This speaks volumes. Not so safe really. KnifeMaker
It has more A.D.’s because everyone carries Glocks. No large department carries a 1911. If you like 1911’s that’s fine. They are outdated and heavy. Glock all day long. Last month I purchased a brand new Smith & Wesson CSX. I'm used to carrying my glock 26. But there's just something about an all metal 1911 Style handgun. That the polymer gun just don't offer..
Better perceived recoil? I have a rotation I swap between at will for everyday carry. It could be a full steel gun it could be a polymer gun or it could even be a striker fired gun. Just depends on the mood I'm in when I open the safe.
"Mom" did pretty well. A range instructor at Camp Pendleton once told me that in most handgun engagements it would be more effective to hurl the pistol itself at the enemy vs. aiming and firing it. He felt that was the sorry state of handgun marksmanship generally. Interesting video.
I have a Colt Government 1911 and love shooting it, however; it only goes to the range or maybe as a back up for hog hunting. I don’t own a Glock, and probably never will, I hate how they handle. But if you pidgeon holed me into a Glock 19 vs my colt gov, I’d learn to love the Glock. As far as 1911’s being “horribly unreliable”, keep in mind, all Glocks are made by and QC’d by Glock. 1911’s range everywhere from hand built master pieces, all the way down to pot metal garbage that makes a Taurus look fantastic. So when someone tells you that 1911’s are unreliable pos’s, dig a little into that, they probably aren’t shooting something that was made correctly.
My daily carry Series 70 has an estimated 190,000 rounds through it. Its been maintained.. slide tightened, bushing replaced 4 times, 5 slide stops.. the usual.. but it shoots and shoots and shoots. My last jam was 10,000 rds ago.. bad charge of powder..only pulled the slide back 2/3rds the distance and stove piped.
Love my 1911s. They're easily my favorite to shoot out of my collection. I also naturally shoot better with them. That being said, I carry an Arex Delta gen 2 and Glock 45. Have to practice more with them to hit the same, but they just run and don't complain.
A 1911 if properly taken care of and not a crap brand will function just as good as any glock. I say this having owned multiple Glocks, in every caliber they offer besides .357 sig and 10mm, I've even owned the .45 GAP(shot fantastic), and having owned multiple 1911's.

I grew up with the 1911, I own 3 . Colt Commander and a Government Model both in 45 and then a Officers Model 1911 in 38 Super +p. Never saw a reason for anything else and yes, I've carried them in harms way.
Great video, as always. I have a few .45's (mine are reliable), but my SHTF gun might be an M-9 or a P-38, this last because after decades of shooting them I really don't have to think much about the gun so I can worry about my tactical situation. The quicker target re-acquisition of the 9mm over the .45 is a plus. If I am at the farm, I like a 686+ for its added power, and its ability to carry different ammo types in one cylinder. Got snakes? Coyotes? Bears? A revolver won't gag on different ammo. Your situation will dictate what you feel you should carry, and finances are a big factor, too. I personally don't like them because of the trigger, but I think they've gotten a bad reputation for reliability because of the high round count military firearms see.
@Contingency IBCT I got a G19 for that SHTF situation...you know in case my HK USP were to break where could I find parts? And then I remembered that USPs don't break.
I think that the 1911 "CAN" be a really reliable friend. IF the parts (extractor properly tensioned, quality magazines) are there, I've shot the darn things over 40 years with nothing more than the Series 70 magazines - today there are better ones from Wilson/Vickers. Set of decent sights and a 4lb trigger, that's pretty much it after you've vetted it by shooting a lot. Of course the G19 has more rounds on board. It can get the job done as well, it's just a bit harder to manipulate the long stroke trigger. Pays your money, takes your choice.
I have 38Super, 9mm, and of course 45ACP. I use Wilson Combat magazines almost exclusive with mine except on the range I will use the 1 mag that came with each. The ONLY times I have had reliability issues was when shooting underpowered reloads that were fired in a Glock first, and the 38 Super needed a break in period. All of my Glocks are golden right out of the box also. I have never shot any of my 1911's more than 400 rounds without cleaning. I use to take my Glock 22 out of my dusty truck door and shoot a 150 round match without a second thought. I would clean a 1911 the night before a match. lol Love them both for what each offers.
James - as always, great video. I pray every morning at the altar of the 1911, but couldn't agree more with Clint. A stock Glock 19 is an excellent 1st choice. Loved the portion with your Mom. Take good care of her - she's a cool cat.
I'm a 1911 guy, they're just what I'm comfortable with. I already have a metric butt ton of ammo, I know what to expect and how to deal with their quirks. But... When someone asks me what they should buy as a new shooter, I tell them to get a Glock. They're simple, affordable and reliable.
I have a Springfield 1911 Operator and I have had no malfunctions even through what would be considered the break in period. The slide is also very tight so it honestly surprised me.
The "best pistol" is the most reliable one you can shoot well. For me it's 1911, CZ and S&W. The caviat to the 1911 is it must be built by craftsmen/gunsmiths not mass produced garbage.

I did a similar thing years ago with my dad, who was 70 at the time, and wanted a self-defense handgun. He qualed as expert in the Navy with a 1911 but that was back in the 60’s hadn’t shot handguns much since. Had him shoot several handguns; Springfield 1911 Loaded, Glock 23, Sig 229, S&W M&P 9, Glock 17, S&W 686 6”. He ended up going with the M&P 9 because it was easiest for him with his diminished hand strength from arthritis. The big takeaway is that the best thing to do for new shooters is to have them try several guns to see what works best for them.
I've said the same thing to multiple new shooters. I've even offered to take them to the range & let them shoot my handguns as well as rent "everything". DO NOT buy what "that guy" tells you to. Shoot them all & make your decision from there.
Could be it wasn't just a case of age and arthritis, but he just thought the MP9 was just a better piece in his eyes. I want to be absorbed into the Glock but every time I handle one at the store counter I get repulsed by the awkward grip angle. Why would I buy something I do not like the feel of just because someone from the cult told me too?

@@williamryan9195 I always thought the same thing. The Glock grip angle is terrible. Then I handled a Polymer 80 frame and loved it. They are more of a 1911 grip angle and also have excellent stippling/texturing. Then I bought a gen 3 Glock 19 and put the parts into a Polymer 80 frame. It's perfect now. That may be something you want to look into.

Always love listening to Clint as he is a no BS kind of guy! This is a straight up great vid of these two platforms and I agree with the pro’s and con’s of each platform. I’m a 54 year old gun guy that has had at one time or another had most of the major manufacturers designs and my conclusions are similar,.. love my 1911 , feels best in hand the trigger is sweet and just running the slide on a good one makes me feel warm inside! However , carrying maintaining and overall out of the box performance a G19 size polymer ( Glock/ M&P/ Sig M18) is my choice for carry for a SHTF handgun. Either way you are well equipped if your 1911/Glock is well vetted and you are trained with it. Great vid!

5:20 I have found that new shooters seem to flinch way more when shooting at the end booth next to a wall. I was teaching someone to use an AR15 recently, and I found myself jumping every time she pulled the trigger, despite knowing when the shot was about to go off. Being next to a wall really increases the sharpness of the sound, and it makes a big difference no matter how good your ear protection is.

I own both a 1911 and Glock.
I carry both (different times) and can operate both.
It's not the gun as long as it works, it's the bone head behind it.
It's far better to practice tactics, trade or field craft, and skill than spend a bunch of money and zero time at the range.
I, too, have both 1911 and Glock 19, pistols in my carry rotation. Each has its strengths and weaknesses. A Glock in .45 ACP may be in my future!

I feel about 1911's the same way I feel about cars. I love old stick shift, carbureted, classic cars/trucks. I appreciate the old tech, classic lines and beauty of that old iron. They are fun to work on, and take out for a cruise now and then but I'm probably not going to use one as my daily driver or especially for long trips on a regular basis. The newer boring, plain Jane, Toyota Camry isn't much fun to drive and definitely isn't going to turn any heads but when I need to get from point A to point B reliably, I'll pick that car over the classic every time. In a nutshell, I appreciate the 1911's and they are super fun to take to the range now and then but for my money, the Glock would be the gun on my side on a daily basis.
Same reason I carry an 1851 Navy clone. It’s a hell of a lot of effort to make it work, but man, when it works well there’s no finer feeling gun.

I have a factory Colt 1911 Light weight Commander in 38 Super. Maybe I'm compensating. LOL!
I have the heavier Officer's ACP, and I have to admit that it has been to the farm with me late at night more than once. I use regular 7 round mags for the extra shot. That lighter Commander in 9mm sounds like a hoot; I have to try one! --Old Guy
As Clint said, if you are going to carry that bulky frame (lightweight 1911 is relative), why drop to the lighter caliber? If you are shooting 9mm, get a polymer gun. Makes zero sense.
@@Gates54 conceal ability of single stacks. I’m a hobbit so chunky wide grips don’t conceal all that great for summer carry, my Springfield EMP with its Bob tail though conceals very well. Could be that I just need to find better holsters, but until I figure that out, a 9mm 1911 like the emp is great. Also helps the emp has a smaller grip size than traditional 1911s

Im 6' 185. I carry a 1911 fullsize iwb every single day. Very rarely do i swap out for a smaller gun but sometimes its a necessity, when working or whatever.
I attended Thunder Ranch when they were in Texas. Mr. Smith is definitely a subject matter expert and it is always good to listen to the expert.

Star PD .45ACP was my favorite carry for years. More accurate than any Colt I owned , never malfunctioned and light weight. I wish they still made them.
I just picked up a Walther PDP Conpact. It felt right from the start. I’m really digging it and it shoots spectacularly. I’m going to figure out a good holster system for it. For its size, it is really light. It is a good compromise of traits. So well designed.
I always appreciate Clint and yourself getting together on these videos. Your practicality brings me back down to earth.
My wife shot Glock, sig, and a 1911. She chose the 1911. She loves the trigger. Ended up with a Dan Wesson Commander. The best pistol is the one you shoot the best.
Your wife has great taste! Dan Wesson makes incredible 1911s. I have a DW Specialist and it felt like I was putting the bullets on target with my mind the trigger is so buttery smooth. I just really, really love how 1911s feel in my hand and the trigger on 1911s in general can't be beat. I usually CCW a g19 but that's honestly because it's just more concealable. At the end of the day carry what works best for you is what I say!

@@astang1072 We went to the range, rented guns (except my 1911) and bought ammo. And I let her go at it…. My wife will never, ever, take a 2 day pistol course. Not her thing. It’s amazing she finally decided to buy a pistol. We have property and she shoots her pistol there. Her operation and aim is getting much better.
A double stack 1911 makes a great nightstand pistol. That's pretty much all I use it for. I CC a polymer frame pistol (not a Glock, but similar).

@@Cumlordcasa correct. A Taurus G3, or G3c, depending on the occasion (although I find myself rarely carrying the G3C). It's a great pistol, with excellent reliability, and great ergonomics for a low cost. I also appreciate a manual safety, because I'm not law enforcement or former military.
@@DDDYLN I carry a g2s I fell in love with the slim grip. Been wanting to get a Taurus pt92. Taurus has made some wonderful products over the years.
@@Cumlordcasa The G2s was really the gun that put Taurus back on the map aside from revolvers. It's a great gun. I just got the G3c because it's the same pistol, but the newer model that fits in the same holster as the G3. Unfortunately, I have XXL hands. It makes shooting the G3c very difficult. I'm also a big guy, so it's easy for me to carry the G3 everywhere. I love the G3. I probably could have gotten an S&W M&P of the same size for $50 more on sale, in retrospect. That said, I think the G3 will eat more ammo than an M&P without a failure.

I carried my Springfield 1911 Government model on duty for about 10 years until I was told I had to go to a department issued weapon. I've probably fired 7-8k rounds through it. I'm sure I've had a failure at one time or other with it, but they were so rare I can't recall any if them.

Yeah, Springfield makes some of the best non-custom/semi-custom/ high end 1911s out there. My first 1911 was a Springfield Operator in .45(because despite me being a 9mm guy, there was no way my first 1911 was going to be anything other than a 5" in .45.)
I'm a young guy and I absolutely love Clint. He reminds me of a great sports coach but for guns.
I carry a 1911. Never jams as long as it's lubed and maintained same as a AR15. The glocs and other polymer guns just felt too light for me. It's all about what you are comfortable to shoot with. Not any one gun fits everybody. This just my opinion. Also, Connie should learn to ride the safety with her thumb. Helps with the recoil and you next shot lining up faster.
If you choose Glock over the 1911, I want you to remember this one thing...American to American...Glock was the ONLY major player against the Assault Weapons Ban in the early 90's, and Colt agreed with the bill. Glock...please make a Glock 11.

Force Multiplier That's the reason I will never own a Colt. I have a lot of 1911-2011 handguns. Unless someone gives me a Colt I will never own one. One of the first handguns I had was a Colt 1911 and it was junk. Don't forget Bill Ruger also told Congress that no ones needs more than 10 rounds when they asked him leading up to the ban.

I've shot Glocks and most striker fired pistols and I don't have a problem with them, they are excellent firearms. However (Comma) I'm in my late 50's and I have a touch of arthritis and the trigger pull of the 1911 just works better for me. I have no problem with the manual safety, nor the grip safety. The trigger on a quality 1911 is great. Carry or use whatever you like (God Bless America) but for me and many others the 1911 was designed right.

I have a number of Glocks and P 80s. Had I never had a well tuned 1911 - 2011 all would be well. There's something about a well tuned 1911-2011 trigger that on other gun can touch. [IMO] I carry a Sig 365 XL because of the size and the really hot summer days here in Florida. Glocks are good guns but {IMO} far from the best. Through the years I have carried many other guns. All in all I go back to old faithful 1911 when I can.

No...not really. I think it says more about the newer philosophy of use of handguns and the better choices of ammo now available for 9mm. That is like saying the AR/M4/M16 is a better fighting tool than the M14. If I had to pick up a rifle and get one shot on a bad guy it would be the 7.62 M14 all day long. If I have to hump a rifle up and down the mountains, I want an AR/M4/M16.

The Glock is easier to shoot proficiently than a 1911 is. The Glock is far more reliable. The fact the it holds twice as many rounds and is still lighter is simple extra. Price need not even be a consideration.
For a long time the 1911 was the shit if you didn’t want a revolver and in the late 80’s-90’s the Glock was the ticket. Luckily in 2022 there are other options that are as good or better than both the 1911 and Glock. What it comes down to is what works best for you and what you are willing to carry and use.
Still nothing better than a Glock IMO. I know there are guns with smaller frames that fit more rounds but if you just want one SHTF gun with parts everywhere, mags everywhere, endless mods, and light weight, they're still king. By miles.

The best gun in the current state of the world is different than the best gun when there is no state at all to the world and its all just hell break loose lol walther ppq and walther pdp are both better than a glock in terms of ergos and trigger, czp10c is just as reliable and has a better trigger also, beretta apx is nothing to sleep on top competitor with any pistol, SW M&P is just as good as glock in literally everything including availability being almost as good for parts and such, the HK USP has lots of weight and is old but is just as reliable as a glock against dirt and mud and is accurate and reputable as a glock so yea there are lots of great options that kicks a glocks ass. I love the glock 23 (40) and glock 32 in 357 sig and the glock 21 is probably the best 45 ever, and I would probably choose a glock for end of world BUT ONLY BECAUSE OF PARTS AVAILABLE BECAUSE THERE ARE MANY PISTOLS THAT ARE BETTER.
I prefer a Walther P99 or H&k vp9 if I’m going plastic I don’t like Glock for the simple fact that they “Austria” took Germany’s polymer H&k vp 70 design and striker system and made it some cheap ugly crap and now all Americans are eating it up like a Toyota Camry or a Chevy equinox. I get it it works….it’s not classy though lol says common man status I prefer to stand out with anything I own when I hear Glock I think average.
The only thing I change on my Glocks are the sites and everything else stays completely stock. I bought a gen 2 g19 that was a police trade in around the mid 90’s and other than replacing a few parts that wear over time (with oem parts of course) I’ve never had any problems with it and shot thousands of rounds through it and it’s still going strong to this day.
Although I have a 1911 and I love it, I feel like both have a place in the world because of their history
For me personally, there have been a few handguns that chose me. The IWI Jericho, the 1911, the Walther PDP Compact, and the Beretta 92FS (so far). Bottom line, I like Glocks and if a Glock 19 was given to me and I could only have that as a lifetime handgun, I could learn to love it. I LOVE 1911s (in 45 or 9mm) I love the way they handle, the way they point, etc. If I was given a 1911 as my lifetime pistol I would be happy with that being my do-all pistol.
Get your hands on a p80 frame. It’s 1911 shoot angle and double undercut. Great feeling when shooting.
@@Irish_Hooligan The supernatural pointability of 1911 comes from the whole design, not just the grip angle alone. And a CZ75 or a clone like Tanfoglio in 9mm or even 10mm is better then 1911. For actual target shooting the grip angle is best to be as angled as posible, even more angled then Glock has, so as to block the wrist in line with the forearm when recoiling, and Glock handle is more straight then that as a double compromise, one reason being to have reliable feeding with diferent bullets, and the other reason to be not that diferent compared to other contemporary guns. Luger P08 has a more angled handle, and the Steyr M9 unveiled in 1999 also has a more angled handle, and so are most real target pistols from top brands like Pardini, Morini, Anschutz, etc., and even russian ones like Margolin.

Still one of my favorite videos because it contains my two favorite guns the 1911 and the Glock. They both have a great reputations. I love firearms especially the great ones. I also happen to think Clint Smith is one of the most upfront and honest gun guys I’ve listened to over the years. He tells it like it is with a style all his own. Great video James and I think we should make it point to bring as many women , moms , daughters , sister and so on , into the gun community. This is something they could benefit from as well. Great video thanks for putting it out there.
Over the years, I've owned several 1911s and several Glocks. I like both of them. I currently own one of each and carry each of them. Some times the Glock, sometimes the 1911 and feel comfortable with with either. And sometimes, when small size is important, I carry either a Springfield Armory 911 in nine millimeter or a snub nose revolver in .38 special. At the end of the day, it comes down to carrying a firearm that you know is reliable and also being able to shoot said gun effectively.
1911:
- Better trigger.
- Has a safety.
- Classic.
Glock:
- More affordable.
- More ammo, generally.
- Simpler manual of arms.
I prefer the 1911.

Me too. But weight is a factor. So I bought and carry a Browning 1911 380 Black Label. It's 20% smaller than a full size 1911 and a lot lighter. Yet, it has all the features of the 1911. I love it and shot it at several Back Up Gun (BUG) matches with good results. I know, I'm a woos for shooting a 380 but ammo has come a long way.

I really enjoyed this. I have a Glock 22(gen 2), and a 1911 in .38 Super (among other stuff). The Glock was my duty carry for 5+ years, and a daily carry for a while after. I love it. I also love my 1911. It's my Sunday Go To Meetin Gun.

I love shooting the 1911 but as far as carrying one I'm not comfortable with it. I ended up carrying a CZ 75 it's the best of both worlds much more comfortable carrying on a double action trigger pull and I still get a beautiful single action trigger pull like a 1911. Plus I can get the capability of a Glock capacity wise.

@@StewieStew820 I've been checking out aftermarket triggers. I'm on the fence about it though seems pretty hard to find an enhanced action upgrade for an IWI Jericho specifically. Whether everything for a CZ or tangfolio will work inside a Jericho is up in the air.

I did see that Alpha Foxtrot is making a double stack 1911 that actually does use the Glock magazines yesterday. They are a bit pricey though 1300$ is above what I would personally spend on something that only sees the range. Like I said I'm just not comfortable carrying a 1911 how it should be carried. My job is a bit rough on guns and the last 1911 I had most of the time I spent finding that the manual safety had been bumped off without me physically doing so.

Nice job James. Im 68 and a 1911 fan, but I own 8 Glocks in a variety of size and calibers and 6 1911s in 45 ACP and a variety of sizes. Clint is correct, 1911s are not for everyone And (my opinion) whether Glock or 1911 Most malfunctions are Operator error and or weapon modifications. Glocks are more forgiving of poor or no maintenance for sure. Training thousands of LEOs over a 25 year period we had many failures with the Glock and 99% were caused by "limp wristing." Never seen a limp wrist failure shooting a revolver 😙
No limp wrist, they just short stroke the trigger and skip a cylinder. When teaching new shooters I always load 1 round to see how they handle it before we move on. So when they short stroke the trigger on a double action pull, they hear a click instead of boom.

I don't know why others have problems with 1911s. After my 1911 was broke in, I've never had a single malfunction ever. And I've put thousands of rounds through it over the years. It also has aftermarket parts too.

I hate to be captain obvious here, but people who don’t have problems with the 1911, stock or not, probably clean them like they should and lubricate them properly. There are a myriad of reasons why a gun will stovepipe, failure to fire, failure to feed, failed to return to battery fail to eject etc. Usually the problem is between the gun and the ground. When it’s not that, it’s usually because the owner needs to be cleaned and/or lubricated properly. I shoot competition with a cult special combat government edition that is stock and I have never had a problem with it. I also shoot competition with 9 mm and I have only ever had two problems. Bad primers and Remington green box factory ammo. I love that ammo and it’s pretty much the only thing I shoot aside from my reloads. Just so you have an idea of the scope here we’re talking about over 10,000 rounds and I’m being modest with only two bad primers so please don’t think that I am knocking Remington ammunition. They are the best.
Every 1911 that I've seen malfunction, and there's been a lot of them, was modified from it's stock 5" configuration. And I'm a glock guy. Gov models will run well if treated well.
If the 1911 is outdated, so is every revolver, which is more reliable and accurate than any glock.

The biggest problems with the Glock are: bad ergonomics, bad trigger, bad sights. That's why I chose the CZ P-10: the Czechs pretty much copied the Glock design and it works the same way, simple and reliable, but they come from the factory with legendary CZ ergonomics, a smooth, crisp trigger that rivals the PPQ, and three-dot metal sights. For the same price.

The 1911 is the best looking handgun imo. It's got amazing history. It's fun to shoot. I own 3 and would buy more if money was no object and there weren't other guns I wanted as well.
I carry a Glock 43 right now though. Thinking about changing to a Springfield Armory Hellcat Pro though.

The only time I ever had a failure to feed with a 1911 it was due to a magazine with a weak follower spring. I'm now very picky about 1911 mags. Only those with strong springs are picked for use.
My take on the 1911 has always been while I shoot them well, they handle really nicely, and they feel great in the hand, for the same size/weight I either want something with more rounds or something with more power on a round for round basis. Great examples, the Glock 19 is as Clint said... Lighter, more rounds, but more rounds doesn't mean you have to shoot them all off. Hell, even a Glock 21 is a good option if you want to stick with .45 ACP. In the case of more power, a S&W TR8 revolver is ounce for ounce nearly identical to most all steel A1 style 1911's unloaded. Fully loaded, it's often lighter due to ammunition weights, but nobody is going to be able to debate that .357 Magnum is more powerful than .45 ACP. Loaded up hot it's without question one of the most versatile handgun rounds out there but also has the luxury of being able to go super light with recoil on .38 Special.
I like 1911's at the range, and while some lightweight models have good promise as carry guns they often are counter productive to what makes shooting the 1911 platform good. The removal of weight adds a lot of additional felt recoil which can be solved with a stiffer recoil spring, but it's still a relatively large gun and still close in weight to a G21. But, if you're a fan of the 1911 and shoot them really well, I suppose it would be a natural transition.
TLDR: 1911 is good on the range but nearly any modern option is better for carry.
I dearly love my Springfield 1911a1. It was the first pistol I ever bought when I turned 21. I carried it for a decade. Then I bought a Glock 26 and have carried everyday since.

When people ask me "what should I carry", I simply reply "the most comfortable firearm in your hands, that is reliable and has good stopping power". When I used to live in California, I couldn't afford a glock or a 1911, at the time so I bought a 92fs 11 years ago, to work as a armed security guard. I wanted the 1911 but, 11 year's later I want to get a 357 magnum as a back up gun, and a 1911 I'd carry every day.
Both are good guns. 1911s need a little more love to keep them running with high round counts. I like Glocks and my wife prefers slim gripped heavy 1911s. Nothing wrong with either, and LOL at the guy saying he saw a Glock catch on fire. It's been a long time since I've been in a gunshop and gotten to listen to their stories.
I absolutely adore 1911s. I shoot better with them, they feel great, they're absolutely awesome. My daily carry is a stock (aside from night sights) Gen 3 Glock 19. They work. Every time.

Well, that is the legend. More popular fiction that fact. I've seen many failures with Glocks. Anyone remember the chamber failures of the .40 cal Glocks? Glocks are very susceptible to limp wristing which is common with new shooters. And the elephant in the room is the Glock is a VERY unsafe for a new shooter. The lack of a real safety is a biggie. Yeah, it has a tab in the trigger and it can only go off if it is pulled. Wait, even though many other types of guns have no tab, don't you have to pull the trigger for the gun to fire? This is a Real safety? How?
What I have never understood is the almost obsessive safety in shooting these days. (Such as being required to show the chamber is empty on TH-cam. Is the presenter going to shoot the viewers thru the computer screen? Really)? Yes it is very important. Extremely so. Yet over and over I hear instructors teach that an actual manual safety is a liability. Being more safe with a firearm is a liability? WTF???
Yeah, I know, the real safety is the mind. So you trust the mind of most of the public out there? Kinda naïve don't ya think? You may be exhausted, bad situation, rushed, do you always trust your actions completely. Does anyone?
There is a good reason that the FBI labeled the Glock "The Toe Popper", and with the newer trend of appendix carry-hello!!! It is the very reason that Glocks are the number one returned new purchase by first time buyers to the store they purchased them from. They simply do not feel safe with the Glock. Oddly, in todays sue happy world, others Countries do require a real safety for Glocks purchased for their Law Enforcement uses as well as Military. But in our Sue happy Country, we do not. Odd to say the least!
Only the Sig 320 has surpassed the Glock in AD's in Law Enforcements circles. This speaks volumes.

Last month I purchased a brand new Smith & Wesson CSX. I'm used to carrying my glock 26. But there's just something about an all metal 1911 Style handgun. That the polymer gun just don't offer..
Better perceived recoil? I have a rotation I swap between at will for everyday carry. It could be a full steel gun it could be a polymer gun or it could even be a striker fired gun. Just depends on the mood I'm in when I open the safe.

"Mom" did pretty well. A range instructor at Camp Pendleton once told me that in most handgun engagements it would be more effective to hurl the pistol itself at the enemy vs. aiming and firing it. He felt that was the sorry state of handgun marksmanship generally. Interesting video.
I have a Colt Government 1911 and love shooting it, however; it only goes to the range or maybe as a back up for hog hunting. I don’t own a Glock, and probably never will, I hate how they handle. But if you pidgeon holed me into a Glock 19 vs my colt gov, I’d learn to love the Glock.
As far as 1911’s being “horribly unreliable”, keep in mind, all Glocks are made by and QC’d by Glock. 1911’s range everywhere from hand built master pieces, all the way down to pot metal garbage that makes a Taurus look fantastic. So when someone tells you that 1911’s are unreliable pos’s, dig a little into that, they probably aren’t shooting something that was made correctly.
My daily carry Series 70 has an estimated 190,000 rounds through it. Its been maintained.. slide tightened, bushing replaced 4 times, 5 slide stops.. the usual.. but it shoots and shoots and shoots. My last jam was 10,000 rds ago.. bad charge of powder..only pulled the slide back 2/3rds the distance and stove piped.

Love my 1911s. They're easily my favorite to shoot out of my collection. I also naturally shoot better with them. That being said, I carry an Arex Delta gen 2 and Glock 45. Have to practice more with them to hit the same, but they just run and don't complain.
A 1911 if properly taken care of and not a crap brand will function just as good as any glock. I say this having owned multiple Glocks, in every caliber they offer besides .357 sig and 10mm, I've even owned the .45 GAP(shot fantastic), and having owned multiple 1911's.
@@m.w.2401 I agree that the .45's will run well, you just have to maintain them more. All of mine are genuine Colts, including one that a buddy gave me; he had it as his sidearm in the Navy during Korea. What a beauty, and still a great shooter. --Old Guy

I grew up with the 1911, I own 3 . Colt Commander and a Government Model both in 45 and then a Officers Model 1911 in 38 Super +p. Never saw a reason for anything else and yes, I've carried them in harms way.
i never been a fan of plastic guns and stiker fire guns.

Great video, as always. I have a few .45's (mine are reliable), but my SHTF gun might be an M-9 or a P-38, this last because after decades of shooting them I really don't have to think much about the gun so I can worry about my tactical situation. The quicker target re-acquisition of the 9mm over the .45 is a plus. If I am at the farm, I like a 686+ for its added power, and its ability to carry different ammo types in one cylinder. Got snakes? Coyotes? Bears? A revolver won't gag on different ammo. Your situation will dictate what you feel you should carry, and finances are a big factor, too. I personally don't like them because of the trigger, but I think they've gotten a bad reputation for reliability because of the high round count military firearms see.
@Contingency IBCT I got a G19 for that SHTF situation...you know in case my HK USP were to break where could I find parts? And then I remembered that USPs don't break.
I think that the 1911 "CAN" be a really reliable friend. IF the parts (extractor properly tensioned, quality magazines) are there, I've shot the darn things over 40 years with nothing more than the Series 70 magazines - today there are better ones from Wilson/Vickers. Set of decent sights and a 4lb trigger, that's pretty much it after you've vetted it by shooting a lot. Of course the G19 has more rounds on board. It can get the job done as well, it's just a bit harder to manipulate the long stroke trigger. Pays your money, takes your choice.
My main issue is how many companies there are which makes it hard to find a good one maybe? I’m not too sure
Mec Gar makes great mags too. They are also an OEM manufacturer so you probably own some without knowing.
I have 38Super, 9mm, and of course 45ACP. I use Wilson Combat magazines almost exclusive with mine except on the range I will use the 1 mag that came with each. The ONLY times I have had reliability issues was when shooting underpowered reloads that were fired in a Glock first, and the 38 Super needed a break in period. All of my Glocks are golden right out of the box also. I have never shot any of my 1911's more than 400 rounds without cleaning. I use to take my Glock 22 out of my dusty truck door and shoot a 150 round match without a second thought. I would clean a 1911 the night before a match. lol Love them both for what each offers.
James - as always, great video. I pray every morning at the altar of the 1911, but couldn't agree more with Clint. A stock Glock 19 is an excellent 1st choice.

I'm a 1911 guy, they're just what I'm comfortable with. I already have a metric butt ton of ammo, I know what to expect and how to deal with their quirks. But... When someone asks me what they should buy as a new shooter, I tell them to get a Glock. They're simple, affordable and reliable.
I have a Springfield 1911 Operator and I have had no malfunctions even through what would be considered the break in period. The slide is also very tight so it honestly surprised me.

The "best pistol" is the most reliable one you can shoot well. For me it's 1911, CZ and S&W. The caviat to the 1911 is it must be built by craftsmen/gunsmiths not mass produced garbage.

Absolutely agree!!! I own the Springfield Armory A1 Mil Spec 1911 .45 & the Ruger SR1911 .45 both excellent pistols!!!!
