    I was kind of hoping there would be one for “please go away, I’m not interested, contract influenza”

      That would be putting your closed fan to your left ear (I want to be rid of you). (Although depending on who you ask, it could also be twirling your fan in your left hand. If you choose the 'placing fan to ear' option, then twirling the fan in your left hand means "we are watched", while if you assign twirling the fan to mean "i want to be rid of you" then "we are watched is drawing the fan open across your forehead.)
      Drawing the fan through your fingers is "I hate you", snapping it closed is "you're being a douchecanoe", quickly snapping it open and closed means "you're being cruel" and throwing the fan at the other person is...pretty self explanatory.
      Keep in mind that this video is more of a modern interpretation that can be more easily used/understood within modern flirtation, whereas the examples I've provided are Victorian fan language (and while "traditional", may be less likely to get the point across)
      If you want some extra subtle Victorian razzle dazzle, give them a fuck you bouquet: orange lilies for hatred, yellow carnations for disdain, scarlet geraniums for stupidity, false orange for insincerity and falsehood, rhododendron for 'beware', hydrangea for boastfulness, bragging, and vanity; tansy for a declaration of war, or a purple carnation for 'rejection, with disgust".
      Hope this helps, I love helping out people who want to sublty tell people to eff off.

    I’m designing a character with fans as weapons and this information will be fun to apply to her characteristics and animation

    I’ve been trying to learn and I wish you had been a bit more detailed because a lot of the things you showed have a double meaning, while placing a fan on your ear _can_ mean something along the lines of “Give me a call” I have learned that placing your closed fan on the _left ear_ specifically means “I wish to be rid of you” which you wouldn’t want to mess up seeing as this video went for a flirty tone. I have also learned that placing the fan on your left and right cheeks mean yes and no, along with a few more insults you’d want to avoid in the situation the video is pointing towards:
    “I hate you.” Draw the closed fan through your hand
    “You are cruel.” Open and close the fan in a waving manner.
    *Be as **_sassy as possible_*
    Other than that the video was great, thanks for the help!

    Was fan language used outside of Victorian England? I feel like some of these differed from other interpretations... might make things confusing in different courts

    • @professorroundbottom438
      @professorroundbottom438 ปีที่แล้ว

      These are different from the traditional signs. I don't know where these came from, but some of them are actually backward, the signals opposite of the traditional meanings. It looks like someone either heard of "fan language" and just made some stuff up, or they tried to modernize it which it didn't need. For example, touching a fan to the left ear actually means "I want to be rid of you" and fanning rapidly with fan edge facing upward means "I'm engaged," exactly the opposite of what this said. There is no signal I've ever heard of that involves fanning downward; that's just awkward and way too obvious.
