  • Fans are a tradition around the world, as is the craftsmanship to make them. The fan was invented in Asia, and has existed in Europe for about 600 years. Portuguese sailors were the first to bring fans to Europe from Japan and China in the 16th century, at which time they were also a status symbol. Depending on the country and time, the function of the fan varied: they have been used to exchange love messages, attract attention, hide, cool down or simply to make a fashion statement. Anne Hoguet is one of the last people to preserve the traditional craft of folding fan-making. From her Paris studio she creates lavish fans for Hollywood productions as well as haute-couture fashion labels.

Folding fans were already in use in Japan around the 7th century. At that time, it was not used to create wind, but as a memo pad for officials. In the 10th century, its role as a memo pad ended and it came to be seen as an item of accessory for the aristocracy.
