Hi Laura, I have a funny story about my first experience with having chickens. I was given some chickens when a egg farm was closing, about 50, take one take all. One day when collecting eggs I noticed small bugs crawling on the eggs and all over the walls in the coup. Freaked out, I asked the guy at our feed store what they were and how to get rid of them. He said they were mites and the chickens need to be dusted, and coup cleaned and sprayed to get rid of the bugs. He sold me everything I needed to get the job done. Cleaning the coup wasn’t too hard, but trying to dust the 50 chickens was no easy task. I used the dusting powder to shake on the chicken being sure to get it under the wings and feathers. This was very hard as you can imagine. I thought about putting a chicken in a burlap bag with some of the powder and like you do with shack n bake I shook then until fully covered. I must say this method worked great, but the poor things spit and shuttered when let out of the bag. When I had completed eradicating the mites I told the feed store guy what I’d done, he laughed so hard he was crying! He then told me that I only needed to dig a small shallow hole in their run, put some sand with the powder mixed in and the chickens will get in on their own and fluff up the sandy powder on and under their wings. We both had a good belly laugh, along with everyone I’ve told this story too! I’m 65 yrs old now and much more experienced with raising chickens.

Fellow chicken keeper here. Not sure if anyone else commented about your nine chickens that had leg paralysis but it sounds exactly like Mareks disease.
I manage a thrift store and yup you guessed it, someone left a poor chicken in the store in a shopping cart. I called my cat rescue friend, and we now have a happy chicken friend. Who by the way loves cats. She laid her first egg this week. She does however have bumble foot. Sad someone would do that to her. She is also black and quite sweet. (the women left her dog food in the cart) hence the reason her feet were bad. But she is happy and running around with cats :)
I think bumble foot is from an infected cut or scrape on her foot, not her food. You can see if a vet who sees other birds could treat her or look up what to do yourself. It’s kind of gross though.

I did not "guess it." 😄 Like not in a million years. It's funny to imagine someone so frazzled by caring for this chicken with a bad foot, they sneak her into a thrift store in hopes that some frugal egg-lover will take over the responsibility.

Even though I don't actually have chickens, I love hearing about caring for them, and in fact everything about the chicken coop. The "cottage garden" around it is absolutely darling: my FAVORITE part of your entire landscape.
I wish we could have chickens in our town but it’s not allowed. Our eggs in the stores vary, Walmart they are almost 6.00 dollars & our grocery store is almost 7.00. So I found a local girl that has chickens & OMG what a differences in taste! She charges 3.00 a doz & I’m good with that. I’ve already bought 10 dozens from her already!
I shop at Krogers and the eggs were $2/dozen
Can’t you use the “bedding and poop” as compost / fertiliser.
If you can organize a group (maybe through Facebook?) and present a realistic proposal to your city government, that's how people make the change.
Include things like no roosters, minimum setbacks and number limits. Be prepared with info about sanitation, etc to address possible concerns.
Contact your state legislators and ask them to push for a Right to Farm bill!
I am in the same circumstance. Chickens are banned in town, and there is a heavy fine if you are found owning them. I was told they are considered a nuisance to neighbors, which led to the city banning them.

I have been working on remodeling a shed for over a year into a pretty chicken coop. You should consider a video about viewer chicken coops like you do with garden/water feature ones. Sadly, my coop isn't done yet to submit photos, but would love to see others' pretty coops.
That’s a great idea, Amanda! I converted a horse stall into a 5 star chicken coop, so might not qualify since it’s inside a pole barn, but I made a beautiful chicken tractor from scratch (no pun intended) which I’d love to submit. Not technically a coop but definitely a DIY structure I’m proud of.

My chicken coop has a nice wooden sign in the shape of a highway sign which says, "ROOST 66" . Plus their laying nests are five gallon buckets which are so easy to keep clean. They are mounted with the back end of the bucket in the barn at a comfortable height . Made an easy open door at the back of the buckets to collect the eggs, so I never need to go into the coop except for maintenance.
My coop is a work in process, too. It was formerly a garden storage shed. I love to see how others have remodeled, what they use, and how it all works together. Loved this video!

I had chickens for years - no matter how hard we tried to keep predators out, they still got in. We loved them like they were part of the family making every loss was just too tough to bear.

My daughter has chickens, geese, ducks, guinnea hens and a turken. When you said you sat with your hens sometimes it reminded me my daughter missed her daughter one day. She was in the chicken coop holding the pet chicken and both were asleep.

Very nice set up for your chickens. We hang our water from the ceiling and it helps keep the water cleaner. Chickens are so easy to care for and the eggs taste amazing. No comparison whatsoever to store bought eggs. Really like the heat system you have. Keep these type of videos coming. :)
I found hanging the water off the ground is helpful too. 👍🤗
Adding a few more inches off the floor by hanging the food and water really keeps the pans much cleaner.
I have seen videos where men have built moveable chicken tunnels. I love that idea and it seems nice for the chickens tip-off be able to roam further and they are protected from hawks. Also keeps the chickens out of the flower and vegetable beds.
Very nice coop! I have about 32 chickens. (It began with eight, and then Chicken Math!) I also have 4 ducks, all males! My bachelor boys. They are the funniest guys around. We just finished a new coop, so now I have 3 coops and what my husband likes to call my "Chicken accessory" shed. Funny man. I also have 6 roosters! Luck of the draw at Tractor supply. I love them all and love taking care of them. It is so calming to sit outside and watch them go about their business. So enjoyed watching how your operation works and how you care for you "girls." They look so happy and healthy.
Loved seeing your hens and their super home today! I have 10 bantam chickens and love them so much. I didn't know it was possible to love chickens! In Aug one hen went broody and hatched 3 chicks. We got lucky and they are all hens and have just started to lay the cutest tiny eggs! We free range ours but our raised bed gardens are protected with cattle panels to keep the deer out. So fun to see the chickens running around the yard all day!
I love your coop. I wish I could’ve done mine that way. One thing that I add to my coop is Diacom earth. This helps prevent worms and coccidia from getting into the chickens. I spread a dusting underneath the pine shavings.
Diatomaceous earth is the generic name for it and it does come in a “for human consumption” grade just in case anyone is wondering/concerned.
@@juliereis146 Yes. It must be human grade. The other kind is for pool filters and can be deadly.
I like pine shavings because they break down and we can have a small compost pile in the run. Then twice a year all the waste and compost gets tilled up, dug out and put in my veggie beds.
Im in Oklahoma and have similar weather as Lauras. I used builder sand inside my coop. LOVED IT! No dust no mold no smell. cleaned it like it was a giant litter box, super easy. It was great for their feet (kept them clean and mite free) Their water never got dirty. Very economical. never had to replace the sand.

Great coop tour. I’ve found that if you hang or raise the waterer five inches or about the height of the chickens breast area it keeps the shavings out and the water cleaner. I like how you guys covered your run to keep Hawks, etc. out, and the chickens in. My run is to large to cover and I find my chickens flying over the 6’ chain link fencing, they then proceed to the flower beds and kick the wood chips everywhere. I retired this year so am looking forward to addressing the situation soon. Love the idea of plexiglass to keep the weather out as once snow gets inside the run area the girls don’t care to go outside. For anyone considering getting chickens I highly recommend putting glass board under the roost area, to catch the poop. I clean the boards every third day and use it in the flower beds (once it’s dry) it’s been a game changer in keeping the coop clean as now I only have to replace the wood shavings every couple months. Chickens do most of their pooping at night while on the roost, I use an old 18” paint edger to scrape it into a bucket, best fertilizer ever. We have 38 chickens 🐓 and the eggs taste so much better than store bought eggs. Laura you should get some of the free Purina bling signs, they give them to customers once a year where you purchase their feed. I love how you are teaching the kids to enjoy and appreciate your flock 😊. Thanks for sharing all your tutorials with us. I have been gardening over forty years and am still learning from you and your mother.
Hi Guys, i find with my girls having the water container up higher, it doesn’t get so dirty and is easier for them to drink from, awesome set up, love the winter panels. ❤❤
Yep! We used to raise our water container off the floor, using a couple of pavers stacked on top of each other. It made all the difference in keeping the water clean!

When i had chickens i use to get a bale of hay. I used that for ground cover. The hens loved it because of all the hay seed heads to munch on. I made a run out of my outdoor coop where they could eat grass and whatnot. After the seeds came up from my garden i would let the hens free range, they never chomped on my garden items. Just occasionally browse through looking for a stray bug or a worm. Plus, they do a little scratching but never ever hurt the plants. It was like clockwork too at night they head straight for the coup first ray of the sun going down they head for the coop and I just closed the door and they be safe and sound. You've inspired me to maybe get chickens again they're really quite a delight and hilarious too🐣🐤🐥😂
They chicken coup has always been my favorite part of your property. They flower beds around it are so cozy and cottage feeling. The coup itself is like a small cottage. Keeping it neat and clean and decorated blends right into the yard.
I would love to see a chicken friendly garden right outside their coop that you could let them out to pick at herbs and other edibles growing around the coop with another "outer" fence to keep them contained to that area. Would be amazing and next level and something you could pull off like nobody else. Please consider that for the future no rush maybe this summer? lol If your chicken dies and you dont know why, have a necropsy done so you can possibly save the rest of your flock. @@highgroundhomestead I saw a cool coop design with the coop in the middle of 2 fenced in gardens, then rotate which side is the "chicken run" and rotate as needed. My chicken coop is 50ft long and I turn them out on an acre of pasture/woods but I would love to set up a garden just for them with mostly herbs and greens that grow back quickly
Chickens would tear the whole garden up over night. My dad used to have a bathtub in the back yard with worms in it to go fishing with. He left the lid off once and the chickens cleaned the bathtub empty of all dirt in one night. They can move mountains lol.
@@VeryGreenly You just ass plenty of hardware cloth, chicken wire and rocks around the base and they pick at the parts that grew through. Look up chicken salad bar. Laura could fill the whole area with so many plants they couldnt make a dent in an hour or so in the evenings once in awhile and its great for their health. Ive got 60+ I know they are very destructive if youre not careful youre right

We hang our water and feed from above and keep the height just so they can walk up and eat or drink, this way they can not rake the bedding from the floor
into the eating and drinking container. On the feeder, it is open on the top so I took an old metal pie plate and wedged it in the top and it keeps them out
and the mice also. We also use straw in the closed run and pine shavings in the coop. Under where they roost at night we have a shelf of sorts like a long box,
that we put cat litter in, so in the mornings when we go to let them out, we simply "scoop" the area and we are done. We have put underground the hardware cloth all around the converted pen and around the coop also. The top is covered with heavy-duty bird netting. So far it all works for us just great.

Your coop area has always been my favourite part of your garden. The cottage garden simply re-inspires me every Spring, and frankly, chickens. I just love them, they are intensely comforting, I adore that soft clucking noise they make when they are relaxed, happy and feel safe. If someone could make a night sleep meditation with just chickens softy clucking, I’d snap it up!

You truly have a wonderful set up for your girls. We had thought of doing chickens, haven't had any since I was young, but with the avian flu being really prevalent, we didn't want to take chances of getting chicks that could catch it, and not survive. It was really spreading this year in PA. Even all the Zoos had their birds (even the penguins) locked up for safety reasons. Hopefully this year we will see it has improved and the cases will decrease.
When I was a kid, my mom raised chickens (and geese and pigeons) in the backyard. It was nothing like this. Now I live in an apartment building and I suppose I'll spend the rest of my days in an apartment, but I dream. I dream of precisely the things you folks have built for yourselves. And I love what you have done it to keep your charges safe, healthy and happy. I particularly love how you present your video in a simple straight forward approach without going off in a dozen different tangents. Well done for the video and thanks for the education it offers.
Every shed I've ever owned had a lock of some sort on the outside. Where else would it be! 🤣🤣🤣 Noone lives on the inside. So funny.
Perfect video! I've been considering getting some girls of my own. They look easy enough, and with the price of eggs ($8.49) for a dozen and a half YIKES, it only makes sense. I so want chickens, but would like a setup like yours, and we don't have a spare out building to build on, so it will have to wait for a big longer. We have a very steep drop off on one side of our property into my neighbor's yard, so even with a fence, I'd be nervous to let them free range. You do such a good job keeping your hens happy - they might be the most spoiled chickens on TH-cam and I love it.
Have you ever seen chicken tunnels? These are chicken wire tunnels that you can put where you want them in your garden. I've seen them on a tv show here in Australia called Gardening Australia.

Great video with lots of information for those interested in keeping chickens (or sprucing up their current chicken coops)! I am a Certified Veterinary Technician with 24 years of experience in mixed animal practice, and my husband and I have been keeping chickens for 10 years. We currently have 19 ladies and a gent. So sorry to hear about your pullets! Sounds suspiciously like Marek's disease. Unfortunately, necropsy is the only way to know for sure. For anyone interested in getting chickens (or any animal) I would recommend not only researching husbandry but related illnesses. Preventative medicine is the best kind (I see this on a daily basis and have learned the hard way myself more than once). Purchase your ladies from reputable sources, make sure they are vaccinated for Marek's and always practice good biosecurity! Homegrown eggs are the best and what makes them even better is getting to know your ladies' different personalities! I love sitting out in the pen or yard with the ladies and a good book (not that I get much reading done)! Thank you Laura and Aaron! Keep the inspiration coming! I was just wondering about that "creepy room" in the cellar you took away, wasn't that a root cellar where you can store food and stuff? It keeps cool even in the summer and frost free in winter. Super good way to save energy! :)

Aloha from us Kwarts!🤙🏽 Your videos are definitely how my daughter and I start our day. She loves watching your kids in the videos especially and thinks Samantha is too stinkn cute. Here in Hawaii, the islands are covered with feral chickens. It's definitely a love-hate relationship. They serve a great purpose keeping the centipedes outa homes (should look at how massive the centipedes are here!) But they tear up the landscape quick and constantly have to be chased off. And if they decide to lay in your pots or shelves, etc, it doesn't matter how much you chase em off! They are literally the most stubborn creatures. They will sneak to kick your plants out of pots and lay. I have full commercial gym setup in garage, and every day, one flies in to lay on cabinets. I've gone to put equipment away only to have eggs drop down on me. 😑 If anyone is curious, we do use the free-range eggs. Even feed them to our dogs.
What a great story. I love to see farel chickens. I have rescued 2 out of 6 chickens someone dropped off in a "well to do" area here in FL. (The other 4 someone else came and rescued but couldn't get the last 2. Secret...wait until night fall)
Folks don't understand the chickens will grow to adult size, they take up a lot of Real estate and it takes about 8 months for them to start laying.
I have decided to put it out on my social media to chicken rescue to relocate these beautiful birds to folks that can handle them. Here in South FL you can have chickens in some areas but you can not have a rooster because they crow. And occasionally you'll have a hen that likes to think she's a rooster and crow too like the one I just rescued. 🤦♀️
I think 6 or 8 would be perfect for that coop and yard. I had chickens for years. I really miss them. And the Buff Orpington and Australorpes are my favorites. The only thing I would say is to be careful introducing adult chickens into your flock. Chickens can be brutal to new comers. Also, when you said your 3 black hens came in as adults when Beverley was all alone, and then Bev went in the corner while the others ate - I wondered if they have intimidated her and she has dropped to the lowest in the pecking order. I always brought in a bale of straw in the Spring and Fall. Just set the bale in the coop or yard and let the chickens tear it apart and spread it around. Mine always enjoyed that.
Yes! Chickens don't like piles of anything! I let them to all the work. They do a fine job of flattening a pile of anything.
honestly, i'm always pining for regular pop ins or updates on the chickens so this video was a luxury. thanks. sitting on the limb and hanging out with them sounds divine. more regular hellos to the coop gurls would be nice.

I agree, sand absolutely sucks as bedding. At least in my area. It might work for some people but it doesn't work for me. Use what works for you. I use pine shavings and sometimes straw in the coop itself and then when I clean it out, I throw it out into the run where the chickens turn it into. Absolutely beautiful compost. I have a poop board that I clean off and throw that out there in the run also. Again the chickens make it into beautiful compost. if you want them to stir it up a little bit better for you throw some scratch greens out there and they'll really go at it. You have the beginnings of a perfect set up to make some great compost, and to keep your chickens happy and healthy.

Even though I don't have an area for chickens it was a very nice video of information. So cute to hear how much you love those chickens. Did you say what your yield is for daily egg count? I don't know if I heard of about the eggs and how tasty they are compared to store-bought and etc. I've only had fresh eggs a few times. I love all the different colors of eggs too.

You guys have a dream coop, so much space for your gals! I especially love the spacious coop itself- - with the natural roost, so practical. Have you all heard of a company called Carolina Coops? They are the Cadillacs of chicken coops and maybe you guys can do a collab?
Carolina Coops are so beautiful. I was hooked on their videos a few years ago and wanted chickens just so I could justify getting a coop from them.

Question, have you looked at Premiere One Poultry heated waterer? It keeps everything clean. In the winter it keeps the water from freezing and in the summer you can make it a cooler by adding ice to the water.

Laura & Aron, There is a community farm near where I live that uses moveable tents to ,sort of, free range the chickens. There are lots of predators in this area, the tents keep the chickens safe and contained. Might be a consideration for grassy areas of your property in the future.
Diatomaceous earth is an awesome thing to mix in run and shavings. You can actually mix in their feed. Good for bugs in them and around them.

The disease could possibly have been Marecks disease. My sister had that sweep through one time after getting some new stock.
Wondering if there was lead paint anywhere?
I wonder if it could’ve been Mareks disease that got the original chickens. Unless ruled out, it might be good to make sure any new chickens are vaccinated before introduction.
