Aren't isopods just the sweetest creatures? They eat up decaying matter and turn it into a rich feed that is taken up by the plants! The species I use in this video are Armadillidium klugii 'dubrovnik' and they are a fantastic species for beginners!

I found mock strawberry (Potentilla indica) to grow nicely in terrariums. With its small leaves it looks like a cuter version of a wild strawberry. It has very pretty, bright red fruits (not tasty tho) and yellow flowers. It grows outside in shaded areas, so it does well in terrariums.
In such a chaotic world that’s always non stop it’s nice to watch these calming videos and it really rejuvenates the soul. Keep the videos coming!
I like them too, I made a relaxing springtails macro video for this reason!
you have absolutely nailed the art of terrarium making - looks like a literal slice of nature.
I would recommend springstails to avoid mold and mites since its a damp and warmish environment. Isopods primarily eat dead things so they wont eat mold and that's where springtails come in.
I've found just by keeping wild types of Armadillum species that springtails are easy to come by once you establish your first colony and forget that they exist because i just transfer most wood pieces/substrate with isopods with the desired traits and the springtails just tag along lol (which seems like he has as well)...BUT for educational purposes he should have thrown that out there.
@@wendymonterroso2476this is so true I just started a moss propagation bin and was wondering if I should add springtails to it and next time I opened it I noticed springtails were already present... Something I put in there must have had tiny babies on it that I didn't even notice!
Thank you for make this video, today I feel really down and your channel relax me a lot
I'm finally gonna do it. Been watching your stuff for about a year and I got a big glass jar and a couple isopods eating the plant in my kitchen. Gonna give it a proper attempt
this is so cute!! I want to be an isopod so bad 😭
Me toooo 😭
I've had a fully sealed container with springtails and isopods for about 9 months now and there's still a good number of both species thriving in there.
Isopods are crustaceans and use adapted gills to get oxygen. They can do ok in a sealed environment, but some species need more airflow than others, so do your research!
@@paeve362 I did. First hand. They're alive and well. Porcellionides pruinosis was the species. Maybe others wouldn't do quite as well.
Also read that because the plants produce oxygen the closed container is fine.
Thanks for this! I can't wait to make my own
Your voice is magically relaxing.
Peperomia Red Log has become one of my favorite terrarium plants!
Nice to see that you are back in TH-cam.
I made one like that today. Thank you 😉😊
I have always wanted to make one, but so many steps is overwhelming to me plus don't really know much about what to use since I found your channel maybe all make a list and try one I love your channel and info your sharing thank you.
There are so many different plant names it can be a lot to take in, but they can be a lot simpler :) You should definitely try it!
They can't climb glass but they can plants and escape that way Also, never use leaf litter unless you sterilize it first (boiling and letting it cool).
wow that was an awesome video, i had a question about where people get there plants !! id love to liven up my enclosures
Great video...👍
Wow wonderful Terrarium ^^

Thank you for good sharing.
I've made a wild woodlouse (isopod) terrarium, I love watching it? 🍁🌿
hi! I tried doing what you did but my moss is looking like its drying up :( do I need to mist it more often?
how big does the dog violet get. Just wondered what size terrarium you would have to have for them to grow in.
Please help!!!!
What do you do when your isopods start breeding and over run your terrarium and eat all your plants. They have ate all my moss and my veiny plants I can't remember what they are called.
Did any of them get out climbing the plant?
Very very nice!
But just one question: I read that mixing isopods is not a good Idea - is it depending on which one?
Where do you get you moss from?
Another great video, dude! I particularly enjoyed this one. One question, though. How do you keep your little buddies from grazing excessively and destroying the moss? Is there a way of sustainably managing the population without interfering too much? My sealed terrarium is looking like something out of WW1 after a couple of months.
you can have the substrate contain their food. I mix in Calcium Carbonate powder, Leaf litter, wood bits into the substrate. Then I give them enough leave litter. They should avoid living food if they have enough dead food. Leaf litter is key but depends on what kind of Isopods you have. Rubber Duckies are slow eaters but Dairy Cows are ravage eaters.
What lighting does it need for the plants but not hurt the isopods??
Yo I need tutorials for "people who aren't friends someone from every country"
I need to reassure the wife. How often do you come across escapees (isopods and/or springtails) from your bioactive set-ups? I'm in the planning phases, planning an IKEA Rusta build, and was given an supportive green light from the spouse, whom is now a little apprehensive knowing there will be "bugs" in the house, Lol. I have assured her that they can't climb the glass, but I'm not 100% certain of this claim.
I rly like the terrarium, but i would never mix dwarf whites with any other isopot. I had them bestroy several of my other isopotcollonies, since they outcompete all other, they are relentles breeders.
no springtails?
if i made a terrarium like this and kept isopods in here could i later add in a africa millipede?
Life could be dream, life could be dream. Real Isopod Hours
Love it, but you can’t have two different kinds of isopods one will kill the other over time . Also : that set up will not hold up a year the isopods will eat the plants and the moss and it will be a brown deserts. All in all nice but not sustainable.
Very nice. Although, I thought isopods can breathe through gills because I have had them in my terrarium for probably around 7 months and I only opened it a few times in between. As long as there's enough humidity, they will survive.
How long can this last before it's time to remove tons of isopod poop?

I’m interested in these and am thinking of starting a terrarium. However I still smile at making an enclosure for them as we had them in our basement when I was a kid. Gray boring one.
Awesome video ! I want to make a isopod terrarium but I do not want to breed them as i do not have much Space.
How Can i manage the population to not get hundred of them ?
Thanks again !
How do you feel about using isopods i found in my garden for keeping? They are just grey and small. Will it work out the same?
If they’re small enough, you’re good. I was told today the big ones will die off
Like so often in live size doesn’t matter it’s technic that counts. The setup shown in this video will not work for years, but you can absolutely use the isopods from your garden. You shouldn’t put two different species of isopods in one terrarium though one Spezies will dominate the other over time.
All in all this set up with garden isopods witout dwarf whites and with you feeding them once a week after 6 months will work
It’s a great idea, especially for a beginner - if for any reason you can’t keep them anymore you can simply release them, unlike non-native isopods. they will still be fun to watch!
@@Justpassingby204not necessarily, but I've found that the bigger they are, the more airflow they might need because of the frass (waste) and proper moist substrate to dig in to shed (most of the big ones that died in my terrium when i started this hobby was because of unsuccessfully shedding one or both halves). Also a varied diet is essential, from calcium to protein, and many different greens, they can get pretty competitive in small spaces and eat everything green around, especially moss. So, with proper care, proper quantity and male/female ratios, you can make them grow huge in small enclosures.
Are they able to climb glass? I’m build myself a custom tank.
They can’t climb perfectly smooth surfaces, if your tank has wood or silicon they can access they would be able to climb on that though.
can you do an update?
How often do you feed the isopods
I feed mine twice to 3x per week.
What type of isopod is suitable for a cage containing lizards? so that the isopods are not eaten by lizards
Hope I'm not too late, dwarf whites, springtails!

I guess it doesn't really matter too much which plants you use?
Why do people do these ? Just for a hobby ? I saw it on Reddit and had never heard of this . Kind of cool
I love biology, always had an interest in colony type insects but they are a pain to keep, then saw some beautiful isopods outside my then "new apartment". I originally saw and collected 4 different color variations of Armadillum species now can see over 8 distinct colors/patterns variation. They are fairly easy and cheap to keep, plus it's fun to watch them and exciting to think what hybrids might happen as well.
I notice that u don't bother to answer ur viewers questions & some seemed very important.....
The fact he never replied to this comment either…….😂
He has a website that has contact info and workshops.
@@melbapeach162yeah 😭
his comments are in the form of books that he wants you to pay for lol
He replies on Instagram and Facebook, I don't think he checks TH-cam much
Nice terrarium, but why mix dwarf whites with clowns ,one species will outcompete the other….. ………
Those Klugii are fucked.. 😅
