    I think I figured it out. Rutherford did those illegal races to pay for his parts, but eventually got caught by Starfleet. Instead of prison though, the Admiral/Captain who caught him wanted to get Rutherford to finish his new technology (Better impulse engines?)
    So Rutherford is forced to work for his freedom, and under the pressure of the Admiral/Captain he pushes the technology to far to quickly and gets blown up.
    In order to cover their tracks, the Admiral/Captain then had an implant installed into Rutherfords head, to do four things:
    -Save Rutherfords life
    -Cover his tracks with a fake story about Rutherford getting the implant willingly
    -Remove large chunks of Rutherfords memories to control him or mold his personality
    -Possibly turn Rutherford into some sort of operative

      Cover-up on a secret project could also mean Section 31 is somehow involved.

      In a sense that admiral actually murdered the previous Rutherford.

      @@athroughzdude I don't think it was an admiral this time. I took a closer look at the higher up that was in Rutherford's flashback and it looks like he holds the rank of Lieutenant Commander (at least when the events of the flashback took place). It may be the lighting messing with the image but it's definitely not an admiral given that the uniform he's wearing (again at the time of the incident) is worn by officers, not admirals.

    This was a much darker ending than I was expecting. I thought for sure that Rutherford and his younger self were going to merge at the end, and he was going to become a complete person. But instead his younger self died, meaning that all of those memories are now lost to Rutherford forever.

    • @Electrolux219
      @Electrolux219 ปีที่แล้ว +37

      True, but I think it could also be interpreted as Rutherford choosing to be who he is now over the person he was years ago. He’s coming to terms with how he used to be this rebellious aggressive kid with something to prove & deciding that it’s time to let all that anger go; to move forward as the person he is now even if it was a result of someone tampering with his mind because he likes who he is now, & having friends, & working on the Cerritos.
      It’s such a cool moment! It’s like the best kind of trek where it metaphorically tackles something abstract, like the feeling that your not living up to your own expectations, & uses sci-fi stuff to present it as a concrete issue that can be solved. Rutherford literally gets to talk with his past self & understand that where he is now is likely better than where he wanted to be as a kid. LD rules.

    • @CabbageSandwich
      @CabbageSandwich ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@Electrolux219 Its also nice that this time, as opposed to the usual Cathartic ending as a cop out - we get this.
      Dealing with the reality of becoming who he really wants to be NECESSITATES to a large extent, the forgetting and leaving behind the unstable, unreliable and dangerous person that he used to be.
      Now thats good human commentary, a splash of Sci fi, seasoned with just a bit of comedy and drama.
      Now thats good trek.

    At least Rutherford found a use for the Delta Flyer after Voyager

    • @pendrake40
      @pendrake40 2 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      *@The Lost Subrosian ~* The following is _'Beta'_ Canon (NON-official, but generally accepted by the ST-community), drawn from *[Star Trek Online* (STO) *MMO-RPG* (2010-present 2022)] so take this with a grain of salt... *;)*
      1. *_Return & Repurposed_** ~* The Delta Flyer *_WOULD_* find continued service after the USS Voyager's successful 'Odyssey'-journey back from the Delta Quadrant to the Alpha Quadrant. Starfleet would see the value in the Delta Flyer, and make use of the design.
      2. *_Redesigned & Reclassified_** ~* The Starfleet Engineering Corps, with a team headed up by (promoted) Lt. Commander B'Elanna Torres-Paris and (still same ranked) Lt. Tom Paris, the Delta Flyer design would undergo extensive redesign and refit to more current (25th Century) Starfleet standards & Federation technologies. Eventually, the updated refit-design would be reclassified as the _Delta-class_ High Velocity Shuttle.
      3. *_Rapid Response_** ~* In the STO-era (ST-year 2409-2412+), the _Delta_ HVS sees service in Starfleet as a Rapid Response shuttlecraft, with assignment (usually just 1-2) to many capital starships, and squadrons (5) in-use at planetary garrisons &/or watch-posts across Federation space.
      - a.) Larger than a standard (TNG) shuttlecraft, but smaller than a (DS9) Runabout, a _Delta_ HVS can fit up to 6 people. Excellent for sending a squad of personnel to (short range) locations quickly.
      - b.) The _Delta_ HVS has a stable maximum Warp Speed of 9.98, but (rather obviously) a short range. Some _Delta_ HVS are equipped with Quantum Slipstream Drive (Warp 20 speed), but also only for short range QSD jumps; having a QSD also drastically reduces passenger capacity (max 2).
      - c.) The _Delta_ HVS is armed with a Phaser Array, Transphasic (shield- & armor-penetrating) Torpedoes, and Tachyon Beam (shields- & sensors-disrupting) Emitters.

    It's kinda brilliant how many life lessons the writers can put into this show. This particular episode showed how different you think between early and late 20s while the 2nd episode focused on "sometimes" taking risks to advance your life and the 1st one on how you don't need to do everything yourself and rely on others.

      @@philtkaswahl2124 I'm looking at a screenshot of the starting line up of that race and I don't see anything that resembles young Rutherford's ship at all, but it sure does follow a lot of Star Wars design quirks.

    • @philtkaswahl2124
      @philtkaswahl2124 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@posindustries Look at the line up again. One that's a cockpit with two gold-glowing nacelles on pylons is right next to the Delta Flyer (which is what I immediately thought of first time I saw the episode and its race reference). Also one with quad pylons-ironically more X-Wing like-in the foreground as the race starts.
      EDIT: Mind, I'm kind of the same mind as EC Henry and his vids on ship design, so it takes more than superficial similarities for me to consider something as "Star Warsy" in design. And there are parts of Rutherford's ship that don't twig "SW design language" to me.

    Theres something here that I think most people have overlooked and havent really put much mind into and thats the fact that Rutherford here is an absolute GENIUS. He is far smarter than La Forge, B'lanna, Tucker, Scotty, or even O'Brien as he has not only built a custom Cerritos scale model with a WORKING Warp Core and working Phasers, but he has also the complete engineering schematics of the Delta Flyer committed to memory so well that he can perfectly replicate one and build one himself INCLUDING the Borg tech that would be unobtainable for him.
    Yes, I know this is the mindscape and he can conjure up anything here, but instead of fully making the DF just appear out of nowhere, he actually built it from scratch.
    Im willing to bet that the Cerritos was a sleeper ship filled with some of the brightest and most advanced that Starfleet has to offer but were far too chaotic to serve on a frontline cruiser and were regulated to a supply workhorse instead.

      Technically, he might be accessing data saved to his implant, even if it and his brain is kind of a mess. (And why _wouldn't_ he save the Delta Flyer schematics to his personal hard drive? It's the kind of thing that might come in handy someday!) But yeah, he's sure simulating an awful lot within his noggin at once.

      Probably just a continuity error but my explanation is that Rutherford got transferred to the cerritos after some issue that forced them to overwrite his memory again(or he was just in stasis and they needed an excuse for the missing time) so they implanted memories of him working on another ship without the implant to make him pass it off as something new to the cerritos.

      @@NotTheLastSoL Yep, pretty much my take: continuity error, but they could retcon as false memories. Alternatively the first implant was less visible, but he began to remember after nearly a decade. So they slapped the external Vulcan one on him, and he merged the memories of two surgeries. (IIRC the flashback at the end of season 2 had only the two surgeons, so maybe the third figure was only there for the first one.) That way his memories would match his verifiable career ... mostly.
