This song makes me visualize a Town that I live near, but it is Vacant during the Winter. It's right off the Beach (literally you have to drive on the beach to get there or a boat. It's strange...has it's own Water Tower and everything. We went there on a Snowy day a few Winters ago to smoke a blunt. It was a dark grey day with snow on the ground...it just looked so Lonely. Nobody walking around a mini-town (about 7 buildings/homes including a tiny convenient store). There is a long dock that goes over the water...next to an abandonded house we actually went in because it was wide open, old and seems untouched for like 2 decades. It was VERY creepy upstairs actually (2 small cots, and shredded paper everywhere). We also went on top of the Water Tower just to get a better view. ANYWAYS I'm saying all of this because as soon as I hear that Piano at 0:10 I think of that LONELY Ghost-Town in the Winter...and how people Vacation here in the Summer, but come Winter...it becomes a Lonely place. Lonely but Beautiful...and Heroin is a very big problem here (actually ranked the worst in the Nation). It has become an Epidemic, lost some friends to it. This song puts me in Tranquility and I think of that Town on that same Day.
i saved hearing any of Trent's score until seeing the film, so i could feel the essence of it stronger.. and this film in the opening credits it made it possibly my favorirte opening sequence i have ever seen. Gave such a dark vibe that a packed audience will be in complete silence at the awe of this track.
I'm not surprised at TR's work in movies. He dabbled in it way back in 94 with Natural Born Killers and did sound design for iD Software's Quake in 96. I mean the guy is a walking renaissance man when it comes to music. One moment he's blasting you with ear splitting anthems like Happiness In Slavery, gentle tunes like the quiet version of The day the world went away and now this. Awesome.
NIN. HTDA. I just recieved "Broken" in the mail today, its an excellent EP and possesses the equivilant amount of vital importance to any of Reznor's albums.
This soundtrack is so beautiful. I have to listen to Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross in small doses because there is a depressing aspect to their music. Deeply emotional yet so simple.
@NIN8898 - First off, to a certain degree artists can't help the success they attain - some artists "sell out", others mature and evolve, others "fade out". Secondly there's nothing wrong with loving something your passionate about. I love art - and I have an equal amount of respect and admiration for this particular artist - and the significant impact his work has had on my perception of music as a medium and an art form.
@NIN8898 - It's within the nature of the artist to evolve and develop and experiement with different material. Trent Reznor has never repeated himself musically; lyrically and subjectively perhaps - yes. But every album or release in his discography never sounded (or to a certain degree "felt") the same. It's individuals like Trent Reznor that keep music alive.
I had no interest in seeing this film. Then heard David Fincher was directing, then I heard this and now I have to see it! This soundtrack is doing more to hype me than any of the trailers!
@NIN8898 - I'm just simply expressing my love for the artist. People can perceive the man anyway they want to - but (in my humble opinion) he's one of the greatest - in contrast to how popular other "artists" are - it doesn't matter to me.
@NIN8898 - What matters is the legacy you leave behind - especially if you work within an art. When it comes to certain artists that have inspired me - such as musicians/musical acts like: Radiohead, Nine Inch Nails, The Rolling Stones, The Who etc. - sure they'll never always produce their "best" material - but their "weakest" material is better than what most "artists" will accomplish within a lifetime. Nothing "disappears" for me when it comes to these artists.
IKR. There's just some sort of sadness in it.I can picture myself graduating high school thinking of all the memories I had about school. makes me tear up a little.
John Sailors I think the mellowness of the song is what gets me. The movie came out around my freshman year. and now I'm a senior, looking back at my previous years high school was pretty rough for me where it makes me look at back at all years and how things have changed so fast when I graduated. The movie does have to do a little with school so I pretty much was thinking of my school.
+John Sailors This makes me think more like a particularly dark period in somebody's life - years of trials, tribulations, heartache, emotional and physical pain, loss, and general overwhelming hardship - has finally come to an end, and the person is in the process of moving on. Like he or she can sleep peacefully for the first time probably in their whole life. They can finally look in a mirror, and say, "I am content with who I am. I can move forward with my life, and I am at peace with my past."
@NIN8898 you're crazy bro...i know you ARE a NIN fan cause of your username...but have you even seen the film? the songs were made for specific scenes...i mean sure, listening to this alone isnt AMAZING..but seeing it synced perfectly w/ each scene made it the best Score of the year easily (next to Daft Punk for Tron, but this was more poetic).
Along with "In Motion", "Intriguing Possibilities", "Complication With Optimistic Outcome", and the rendition of Edvard Grieg's "In the Hall of the Mountain King" - the best song off the soundtrack/compilation. But there really isn't a "best song" they're all great in their own respect.
this is by far the silliest junk I have ever heard I m so disappointed right now omffffin G I cant believe my ears Michael Trent WTF is that noise??!!! SSsooooooo Disappointed right now omg I was such a hard core fan of nin, srsly for decades and now this?? after fragile I was stumped- sooo let down -what happened trent? what happened????
To say that Trent Reznor's music possesses significant dimension and depth - would be a large understatement.
One of the best songs from the soundtrack, and amongst one of Reznor's most artistically and aesthetically significant instrumental pieces to date.
Meditative, soothing, comforting, relaxing - and yet simultaneously dark and disturbing - Trent Reznor at his most layered and dimensional. His best.

That feeling of being left out, all the anger and sadness being compiled; mixed with frustration and anxiety.
Beautifully intricate. Genius. Modern masterworks here...

This makes me feel like I'm coming home from a funeral or something.
IKR. There's just some sort of sadness in it.I can picture myself graduating high school thinking of all the memories I had about school. makes me tear up a little.
Not tryna change your opinion or nothin but it's kinda too mellow to me to think of graduation.

That's funny that's pretty much the same thing that happened to me.
