In this week’s episode, we review a Lightroom glow effect you must try on your landscape photos! One of the most popular editing techniques over that past few years with landscape photographers has been the Orton Effect. If you're not familiar with what the Orton Effect does, it gives you the ability to create a soft and dreamy look to your photos, which looks quite nice when done correctly. But, this technique is something that has previously always needed to be done within Photoshop. And, in this video I'll show you how to create the same exact look only using Lightroom. Very nice Mark, I’m gonna make a new preset for this! I’m bewildered, however, thinking that the net effect of the total mask intersected with a luminance range is absolutely equivalent to just selecting the luminance range alone. Would be great if you could clarify (no pun intended) how they are different.

Love it! I made a slight change to the process that might make it easier. Instead of using a Brush mask to select everything, I'm starting with a Luminosity mask that uses the full range. You're still able to intersect this with the Luminosity mask to dial the effect into the brighter portions of the image later. It *seems* to work identically. Maybe?
Hi Mark, another great video. It's nice to see different ways to achieve this effect. It shows another way Lightroom is closing the gap with Photoshop and there are fewer and fewer reasons to bring an image into Photoshop. I am curious why you create the mask over the entire image and then intersect it with a luminance range, and don't just use a luminance range to begin with?
My thoughts exactly. The "total mask" does not seem to do anything 🤔

I was intrigued by why you put a mask on the entire image rather than...editing the entire image. The intersection with the luminance range was a total joy for me to discover by watching your, once again, most excellent tutorial. Great tutorial. First, I watched the video. Then I opened up LRC, selected an image and applied the instructions step by step while going back and forth between the video and LRC. I did change some things for my particular photo and it came out much better than my original edit. Thanks!
The Orton effect has been popular for the the last 30 years, but judicial use is a good tip!

Why are you not just using a luminance mask to begin with? Doesn't seem like you need to use the extra step of a brush mask.
I had the same question. Also, you can save the mask as a preset which can be reused on other images.

Thanks for the tip, I will definitely use this, and try it out on some older photos to start with. I use Camera Raw to edit my photos, and some Photoshop if necessary. I loathe the filing system of Lightroom with the catalogs.
Sure... AFTER I start using photoshop (from your other video on OE), now you show us how to do it in Lightroom! HAHAHAHA! I've been doing something similar in LRC over the years, but didn't realize it was the OE.

I use the Grad Filter, but just put it completely off to the side, rather than the brush method. Other than that, pretty much exactly the same!
Mark, this is very useful. An easier way to create the entire mask is with the linear gradient. You don't have to worry about changing brush size, opacity, or anything. Make sure your image is reduced on the screen. Then, place your gradient start on the right side, for example, just outside the image frame. Drag the linear gradient from left to right. Voilà! The whole image is selected.

@@MarkDenneyPhoto The best thing about this video, for me, is that these instructions can be applied to editing in general, not just the Orton Effect: 1. How to target particular areas in a photo using luminance masking; and 2. How to use masking in the sharpening tool. 👍👍
Hi Mark: thanks for this video and all the other great work. I have found a flaw in this workflow, and I think there's a way to overcome it, but I don't know if that's what you did or not. Everything is fine until your step for global sharpening. Problem is that for most cameras, there has to be a step of "input sharpening" that is roughly close to what Lightroom chooses, plus or minus some tweaks. You essentially eliminated that step with the 100% sharpening with a high mask, and thus we lose the global detail provided by this input sharpening. Of course, this can be overcome by saving an intermediate version (as a tif or dng) that just has the input sharpening , and then you apply the whole Orton effect steps, including that global sharpening with a high mask as you do. Or one can do this Orton alternative in ACR on a globally sharpened image in PS, or some other combination.
I am not sure that this was your intent or workflow, so please comment.

Thanks for sharing this ... almost all of my editing is done in Lightroom because I find that Photoshop is too complex for me. I will start using the Orton Effect now.

hi Mark Thank you so much for sharing this technique - Honestly, Not quite sure it is actually Orton technic but it helps to improve some of my photographies. Especially those which have a large portion of darkness and shadows- and a small portion of High lights. The gloomy softening effects enhance the areas of high luminance. So thanks again Mark

Mark, as always another informative and interesting tutorial. I am curious though what you used as your starting point. Had you already done all of your other edits such as the sky and the gold trees? And, then you just put the total mask on top of that? I may have to give this a shot.
That was fantastic, thanks Mark! Do you apply this as a last step to fully edited photo's though? The photo you worked on didn't have any other edits?
I use LrC to prepare the image and get a good histogram. Then Ps for detail work and colour grade. Yes, everone is telling me I should be doing more in LrC. But I find the Ps masking to be much more controllable.
That's a great alternative to Photoshop. Easy preset to get in the ballpark.

Thats great! Is there a way to also slightly blur the Orton overlay? In PS you normally use Gaussian Blur to the Orton Mask. The Dehaze or Clarity slider only affect the contrast, not that smooth dreamy blurred effect.

I'm surprised you didn't make the final step setting this technique as a Masking Preset that can be tweeked on a photo by photo basis Mark. Think I shall do just that.
You CAN use the Linear Gradient to create your "total mask." Chose the Linear Gradient Mask, place the cursor in the margin OUTSIDE of the image and drag AWAY from the image. That selects the entire image evenly, all at once.

1:20 u only need to zoom out like 25% and u can put the gradient filter below the photo so the entire photo got 100% covered
Hey Mark, love the channel, I generally use camera raw and find that I only use lightroom for making panoramic stitched pictures. Camera raw has it in the drop box but doesn't work. Do you know how to make it work?

Excellent. Is it possible to save the final Orton Mask as preset, so that it can be applied to any photo quickly?
I did so, saving just the selected mask and the global sharpening adjustments. Then just tweak the settings as needed when applying to another image.
Gradiant mask. Just start the mask near a corner, drag diagonally out. Results in an all image mask. Fewer steps.

Also, I shoot a lot with an infrared (720mm) converted camera. Do you think this would help digital infrared black and whites look like the Kodak HIE infrared film I used to shoot with? Thanks again.
Cool video. I didn’t understand why you marked the whole image and then subtracted the luminance. Why not just start with a luminance mask.
This is gonna sound stupid, but the mask intersect with lumiance range can be found in Lightroom CC? I dont use classic and while they are similar, I've noticed some missing features or perhaps just things moved around that im not used to.
How do you find the "Orton Effect' after you create it??

With a linear gradient, surely you just have to pull the top handle all the way to the bottom, creating a hard grad and the whole image will be affected 🤔 Of course you're brush technique works perfectly fine anyway.

Seems like you could get the same result by applying negative dehaze to a luminosity mask?
Good video. Please remember that not everyone uses a Mac (Re: Your reference to using the masking slider.)
If you want to use the linear gradient to create a full image mask, simply start at the bottom and drag down just a couple of pixels.
could you save this as a preset ? Its a pity you can't stack presets in lightroom (yet).
Can this process be realized in PS Camera Raw?
Maybe it's just my monitor but before looks way better than after. Orton works best on Autumn woodland shots..mountainscapes need to be dark, moody, contrasty and dramatic, not softened. But hey it's just my humble opinion. We do whatever works best for us. When we do things to please others on social media you know you going down the wrong path ;)
People have been using the Norton effect for years. Although this way does feel like it mimics it to a certain degree, I don't feel like it fully did. Can we call it an orton effect still then?
