I was listening to this shootout and was surprised at how balanced they both sounded. I was especially disappointed in the Audix i5. Anyway since I own both the ADX51 and the superlux, I'll be trying them out on some blues guitars and also some heavy stoner guitars in a live setting. I'm wondering how feedback resistent they are on a smaller stage with wedges though. But the sound is so balanced, I think they take minor EQ tweaks really well. For the heavy stoner guitars I always struggle with the aggressiveness of a 57.
The Oktava 319 😍😍😍 and the Rode K2 presented here as completely mix-ready mics that could be used without having to blend with another mic. People need to stop lying to themselves about 57s--they really aren't that damn great. The Beyer m201n did a better job at what the 57 is trying to do. Once upon a time, I had the 319, but mainly used it for vocals, I had no idea it was that good on electric guitars. It fit exactly like I mix guitars. Had the punch and clarity in the lows, clear-yet-balanced mids and a darker hi-mid so didn't sound shrill or stomp on the bass guitar "clank" frequencies. Kind of a boutiquey mix.
Nice shootout, but I don't understand why the tracks are stereo. There is a lot of ambience, and you don't mention using reverb. They all seem to sound a little strange (phase issues?) when summed to mono. Thanks.
I have gotten really interesting results mixing a 219 and a 57 also the behringer ecm800 placed correctly can give you very good results since is almost flat two other mics i was kind of impressed for budget recording are audio technica atm 2035 and behringer c2 sdc check them out on guitar the 57 is boring and thin
Unfortunately I dont own one at the moment. But I am constantly in hunting for the 409. So when it happens there will probably be a part 2 of this video.
If get the chance try the sE RNR1 ribbon mic, a dream on cabs and as overheads, I use them on vocals too, a dream mic
I really wish you did a more detailed rmp mod so quick i could not take a usable screenshot and the forum link its dead
Great video! Thanks!
The audix adx-51 sounded really good. So did the superlux.
