Ford Door Striker Pin Bushing Mod Using PEX 1/2” Tubing, Rattle / Closing Issues, F and E Series

  • This is a cheap fix for the common door striker issues that plague many Ford E and F series trucks of this vintage 1980-1996. If you’re missing the bushing this fix works better than replacing the whole assembly. The replacement assemblies out there don’t fit right making the door stick when opening. The PEX method doesn’t do that and fits perfectly.
    Playing with my new iPhone 13, 1T, Pro, Max and thought I would share this fix while I figured out the video issues. First 2 cuts were in Cinematic Mode which had focus issues up close and the last cut was regular video which seemed to work well for this.
    Hope to do a lot more videos of various and hopefully helpful things from complex systems to simple things like this.

    Brilliant. So it doesn’t spin. At this cost and easy install it’s almost like grabbing another paper towel. Thanks for sharing.

    I've replaced these using 3/8 in. sch 80 PVC pipe. The ID is the same as the original, so it does roll, but you do have to machine the OD slightly to match the OD of the original or the door won't close.

    Great idea ! They don’t sell that even as a part, you have to buy the whole striker

      they do sell them, at Orielly. I just bought a set today. It comes with 2 for the doors, and 2 for the tailgate strikers. They are right next to the striker assembly

    I've done this for my 1997 F350 for the past several years. I still have plenty of PEX tubing left from a 5ft length I bought from Home Depot.

    I'll give the 1/2" PEX a try the next time those aftermarket plastic bushings crack and fall off. I think if they were Delrin and the correct length, Id and Od they would never need replacement again.

    Now why didn't I think of this! They do sell the bushings by themselves about $6 for 4 but I usually get them for nothing at salvage yards when I go picking.

      Can you buy them at auto supply store? I don't want to go to Amazon!

    Well I just did this to my 91 Ranger now the door is stuck closed. Any tips on where to go from here? Hoping I can get the door card off to mess with it while the door is stuck closed

    Torx T50 is what's needed to remove. Think I am going to make a new video noting the required tools, most vids I have seen jump right to removing the bolt. I'm also going to try and stick a magnet next the post to try and hold the nut in place.

    Lol, it took me 4 hours to get the doors to open close right after replacing the striker pins. 😂

    How well are they holding up? You know that they have repop bushings right? Wind noise and rattling is probably due to the missing weather striping.

    • @GVR1670
      @GVR1670  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good. No problems so far or wear. In my case the rattling was caused by the striker pin. When the bushing is worn and gone it will not allow the door to close all the way and it will sit loose on the pin. So you then have rattles and wind noise. I have none of that now and didn't touch the weather stripping.

      @@GVR1670 you're correct the bushings add to the rattling but the weather striping actually seals the door thus reducing the rattling and eliminating the wind noise

    • @GVR1670
      @GVR1670  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Purosanluispotosi what some people are doing is cutting the PEX tube diagonally across and slipping it on to the pin. That way so nothing needs to be removed. I never tried that but some swear by it and the PEX holds and doesn't pop off.

    I replaced the striker on n my 94 Lightning and it closed perfectly BUT now the door will not open! Any ideas?

    • @GVR1670
      @GVR1670  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I did the same thing. If the striker pin alignment is too far off (up or down) it will get caught on the door and stick. You have to pull on it pretty hard to release the door. Then loosen the striker assembly and move it up or down to better align with the door. Sometimes you can see markings on the truck body where it was before and just match it back to where it was.
