    Thank you for the vid fellas! I gotta get back in the water! If you get winds out of the N/NE at around 35 knots for over 24 hours, the north shore of Lake Superior has dozens of epic spots to surf! It's clean and looks like ground swell. It is ground swell. The intervals can get up to 8 seconds or more. (The winds do have to be from way over on the the other side of course. They can't be local winds) It's just incredible! A dream! If the winds come out of the N/NW, Marquette Michigan and around that area has beaches with A-frame peaks everywhere and point breaks as well! I remember surfing and sheltered spot there once when the off shore buoy was reading 17 feet. Then we surfed the beach and the A-frames were perfect clean barreling waves. Maybe up to 8 feet at the peak on the bigger ones. They quickly get down to about shoulder height though. That's one difference I've noticed about the lake waves vs. Ocean waves. I remember surfing Park Point once (beach break) and it was on shore and then for about 5 minutes the winds switched and we had these perfect little shoulder high peaks that were pitching. Only about five minutes though. That's what makes it so amazing to catch a good wave on those lakes. God bless ya'll and the Great Gitch!

      @@bunt1691 Yep! I believe it. I remember going up to Lutsen back around 2008/9 around September/October and I found this little cove type beach (tourist spot because there were plenty of people. There was this little waste high (maybe slightly higher) clean wave coming in a-framing. I think the left was slightly better but there was some kind of debri in the water at the end(old dock or something, I can't remember but sketchy). Super small and quick little wave. It just popped up around this little headland, peaked and broke clean. No wind. I surfed it for about 45 minutes alone. It can be like a weird little dream bubble up there.

    As a native to the lake. born and raised baby, that lake has a mind of its own, she doesn't ever give up her dead, or leave any trace. Many have died, many have survived. Though of her history, she is our home. Lake Gitche Gumee, is the devil beneath the waves. It takes guts to fight against her.

    I spent about thirteen years surfing up there. I met the best guys and girls ever. After surfing in paradise around the world, I never had better friends than my lake surfing friends! From my local Twin Citiot crew to the Duluth Legends like Greg, Luke and Laddie and then there's the Marquette crew; Rusty, Amy and hardcore Dan on the other side! That's just one lake. Then you have all the boys from Lake Mich and Ontario all the way to Buffalo NY. It's a completely different vibe compared to places like Hawaii, Cali or Oz. We get that crowds can be annoying but there's so many undiscovered spots and plenty of room to spread out. SP is a spot that people could get agro but that's because the wave comes from 600 feet deep and then breaks on rock shelf about 5 feet deep. Stand up barrels! Don't be droppin in there.

    To the others that have commented in disbelief:
    The waves definitely can reach 28’. Born and raised on this lake, right beside me right now as I write this in Ontario Canada, and I’ll tell you one thing all locals know: You don’t mess with Gitche Gumee.
    That lake will turn on you in the blink of an eye. Its cold in the middle of summer, and will turn into a churning storm with the lightest breeze out of nowhere.
    A high wind will make this lake deadly to be on in anything. Period.
    Surfing though! I’d never heard of surfing superior until today! I cringe at the thought of jumping in on a 95F day in the middle of July! Let alone October! Or winter as some other videos!

      You can drink right from it once you are away from shore. Been doing it for years. I've heard that some surfers use a larger board for buoyancy.

    • @italyavenue
      @italyavenue 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dustin Morrison the only measurable salts come from pollution:. sodium fluoride and sodium chloride and on and on....I would NOT recommend drinking that water regularly. Lol. The hardest part about surfing a lake has nothing to with salinity but rather tidal forces. Waves on Lake Superior are generated by winds so there is no energy transfer like you see in an ocean where waves appear to be "moving" columns of water heading toward shore. If that were the case then why don't all buoys get returned to beaches? Right? They just go up and down as another form of energy passes through water. Surfers aren't really riding water waves- they are riding waves of energy that the water simply restructures itself it to just for that moment is passes through. No such energy exists in measurable amounts on Lake Superior. It's all caused by winds and so is most isolated to the surface. This makes it hard to get that lift you do surfing on the ocean. The board is oriented the way it is to capture as much of that energy as possible before it passes you by and ends up getting absorbed by the increasingly shallow sandy shore.

    • @italyavenue
      @italyavenue 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not where they were at. I have lived in Duluth, MN on and off for years. I have also surfed some of the biggest and best waves in the world. The swells on Lake Superior can easily reach 40- 80 ft and that is terrifying and deadly when you are out sailing but there is no beach break to speak of on the coast. There is no shelf for the wave to lift- to pick up speed and energy- so you might see 10-15 footers at the most and its all chop. These guys were in Michigan. Its a lot more shallow there compared to the Minnesota coast so there are more options for surfing but it still sucks. Lake Superior is an incredibly powerful and scary thing to behold. Even in the middle of August the water doesnt get above 40F. So if you are into sea kayaking or sailing like I am you better know what the fuck you are doing because if you take a spill you have minutes before your dead from hypothermia. Throw in the sudden and extreme changes in weather and you have something rare . I spend half my year surfing and living in Dominical, Costa Rica, known for having one of the most wicked mid tide breaks in all of surfing- very few experienced surfers are fit enough to handle that water and even fewer still would be able to handle what Superior would throw at them. It is a beautiful yet evil thing.

      Booger Presley depends on where you go. There are places in Costa where the waves aren't even half as big but unless you can run a 5k in under 18 minutes and then hold your breath for 2 your ass isnt going to make it back to the beach.
