  • In school, or really in life, we will face setbacks. When failures compound, our minds often run wild with self-doubt and hopelessness until we aren't able to continue working toward our goals. We aren't taught in school how to manage this, only that it needs to be overcome. What has helped us get past these roadblocks is following a set of principles to shift the focus from negative to positive. So here are our 5 principles, 5 mental habits to stay mentally strong and secure.

Best quotes for me from this video are the following: “no one is more miserable in life than the person who wants to be someone else” and “If we spend energy wishing we were someone else we're not using that energy figuring out ourself and what we can actually bring to the table”. Great job guys, keep it up!

I’ve always disliked the “be grateful instead” advice, but it’s been a stressful week for me and this video gave me a little push to reflect and be thankful. It’s still a good life. :)

I think it’s somewhat good that school don’t teach us directly about these, but some conceptions on these ideas would have help. Though I think School already give us the chance to “strengthen our mind” through assignments.

I donr think school can , school should teach alot of things , but it should not. Because that's process of learning thru mistakes. And it's more valuable when u have learnt they mistakes. If school spoon fed us everything, i don't think it would have been better

In these 2 yrs of pandemic which unfortunately coincided with my life's 2 most important years ie; undergrad/highschool/11th & 12th it's been a tough journey.
The biggest negative was it's mental health implications like: depression, anxiety, self-doubt etc.(even though I was a meritorious student)
I'm not here to tell my sad story, but to appreciate what Mike&Matty addressed today.
    Thank you.

I know it feels like these are the do-or-die years of your life, but trust me, I've been there and I can assure you that's not the case. You'll get plenty of opportunities so don't take it too seriously. I'm not encouraging you to be complacent but life doesn't end here. The pressure is tenfold if you're a science student (again, been there) but it gets better. Just hang in there and do your best.

reflect on setbacks: no room for pity, feel grateful for having learnt the lesson
just because you didn't fail, doesn't mean there's nothing to learn
research before taking risks (the pros and the cons and whether you'll be doing it)
everybody's strengths and weaknesses are different. so don't compare yourself with others
don't let pride get in the way of your collaborations with people who are better than you at what you wanna do

spent most of my life at a desk in front of a computer and a book too....sigh.....there r worse things in life tho....thnx!! I am beginning to realize that the body wants balance, thus, we need to spend less of our time sitting down and studying. The body was not meant to sit long periods of time or to stay up late studying every day for years. That takes a toll on the nervous system and plays a major role on how the mind, hormones and organs behave in the long run. Also, how people deal with setbacks depends on one's life situation. Some setbacks leave a greater impact than others....but if you do keep on going and find out what methods to change, it does help one grow but you don't necessarily look back at it with gratitude tho....

So from your guys' experiences, what do you feel about doing work at your desk, but also having it be your relax/break time area too? My girlfriend recommended I should change sceneries and go somewhere else to take my 15 minute break after I do my 45 minutes working/studying, but I typically stay at desk space and just watch an anime episode or a youtube video during that break. What are your thoughts on having the same area be your work area and break area as well?

Hey, may I suggest another mental habit to get into 🤓...start listening to lofi music🎶 quietly while studying. It has been shown to help students stay focused by triggering the cerebrum and makes studying more enjoyable, which, obviously will make you study longer if you are enjoying it. Good luck to everyone!🙏🏻

Thanks for sharing, I liked the 5th point the most since it relates to me trying to figure how to synthesize multiple disciplines and how much I've yet still to learn. Although, with how academia is set up for publishing academic scientists - being first to publish X result and being original is key at least in the U.S. from what I'm familiar with the whole schema it makes it hard at the same time since it ties into your "success". A lot more can be said.

I'm don't the what to do with the last tip. My ex bestie is the only one who does better than me in exams. She betrayed me in a way that i longer trust anyone . She always make me feel miserable by pinpointing my flaws .so it's better to stay away from her . And also all my other friends are not at all focusing on studies . Even though they are some good friends they pressure me to join them to play and hangout even if it is near my exams .. Recently i started focusing more on myself. Starting studying consistently and make some good habits for that i had to ditch my friends.. They are kind of distant to me these days for not hanging out with them and being studious . But yeah it's the end of my high school i had to do well in my exams if they can't understand it then let it be 🙃

It's good that you're focusing more on your studies these days. But, make sure to give yourself some time to relax too. Friends aren't bad at all. Maybe you can hangout with them 30 minutes a day or something. Socializing is good for you too. Just explain to them that you're gonna have to study.
