  • A reading of a selection of Hafiz's poems translated by Thomas Rain Crowe.
Persian lyric poet Hafiz (born Khwāja Šamsu d-Dīn Muḥammad Hāfez-e Šīrāzī) grew up in Shiraz. Very little is known about his life, but it is thought that he may have memorized the Qur’an after hearing his father recite passages. He is one of the most celebrated of the Persian poets, and his influence can be felt to this day. As the author of numerous ghazals expressing love, spirituality, and protest, he and his work continue to be important to Iranians, and many of his poems are used as proverbs or sayings.
Music: Maok - "Universal Love". With deep thanks to Maok for the use of his beautiful, transcendent music on these readings. Please find more of Maok's music at his following sites:

My lips tasted the salt drops of longing which fell from my eyes, yearning to coalesce with The Beloved, a love that can't be expressed by any words. Thank you, Samaneri. Please upload more poetry from Hafiz and Rumi for they dance with the essence of God, they fell in love with Love Itself which is the Truth of creation. I lay down the dull blade and whisper, I Love You...(crying)

I started a “tradition” of texting my son and daughter a “wise” saying most every day. Some are stoic, some witty, some of a Love greater than all other pleasure. Today I sent my kids this:
Once a young woman came to Hafiz and said, “What is the sign of someone knowing God?”
And Hafiz became very quiet and stood in silence for nearly a minute. Lovingly looking deep into the young woman's eyes, he then softly spoke:
“My dear, they have dropped the knife. The person who knows God has dropped the cruel knife [] so often used upon their tender self and others.”
    - Hafiz, born ca. 1320 AD, Persia.
    At 5:36

When ' I ' see through his eye , I saw all are mirror images, I laugh at the dust and it's power, to hide the simple universal truth of oneness.

There are many misunderstandings and misperceptions about the use of the image of wine in Sufi poetry (it is used as a metaphor for Divine intoxication and Love). This short extract explains it well and is worth knowing about:
