The Ecstasy of Fondness - Hafez

  • Hafez, one of the greatest and most beloved of Sufi poets, is a paragon of softness, passion and mesmerising poetry. Here, Richard Rudd takes a playful approach to Hafez, using his Divan (the collected poems) as it is used in modern day Iran - as an oracle to guide us in a journey into love. Crafted over several months, this monologue takes some radical twists and turns as the spirit of Hafez appears in Richard’s life, weaving friendship, revelation and unexpected synchronicity into a canvas of insight and intrigue. The completed monologue was sent to Iran where a living Setar Master recorded the beautiful soundtrack over the words.

As I lay here thinking of my dad, Abbas, a Sufi, artist, a poet from Shiraz, dying in a hospital room; he taught me the words of Hafez as a child. I miss him. Thank you

Oh thank you for this. Hafez came to me in a dream once, about a year ago. I do believe he was calling to me... he's helped me more than I can say.

You are so accurate in saying how hafez words touch our hearts. Its timeless wisdom and timeless love of his experiences. But its also universal as each of us at some point experience what he speaks of so beautifully.

A wonderful timeous transmission from the beloved genius, sage and mentor, Richard Rudd. So many interesting insights shared for someone new to Hafez in September 2023. I also enjoyed learning about Jahān Malik Khātunn, the Persian poet princess. Yet another woman (like Enheduanna the Akkadian princess-priestess-poet and first author and Hilma af Klint the pioneer of abstract art) emerging from the mists of his-story's obscurity to take her well earned place at the table of human splendour and art.

Enjoyed this apart from one thing; Hafiz books can never 'litter' a room. It's not all about the meaning of words, but their collective unconscious associations.

Like the four stages of love and ishq is of two types ishq e haqiqi and ishq e majazi ie path chosen by Sufis. In Ishq-majazi lovers have normal earthly feelings of joy, pain, agony and ecstasy. In Ishq-Haqiqi the lover is human and the beloved is God and then there is Fanaa ie to die for your love and have union with god.

I see you in such a deep "sohbat" with Hafez without knowing his toung. I wonder what you get at if you know. You have come a long way but as Hafez says : "A way is the way of love that has no verge , On it from passing away they can't emerge". So I too urge you to learn the language.
    Thanks for sharing.

beautifully rendered....though we never try to see our masters through paradoxes of existence but we may appreciate this by RIchard and no richard ghazal is not hip hop and rhyme... no it is not. anyhow may there be more love to know someone more closely and completely.
