  • This is a place to get away from it all without sacrificing the big-city offerings of art, theater, music, and dining. You can put on a black tie and take in the symphony, Bach Festival, or k.d. lang at the world-class Sunset Cultural Center, or slip on sweats and a pair of sneakers for a walk on the famous Carmel Beach, window-shop, or wander the hidden passageways and courtyards. You can dine at a number of four-star restaurants or eat al fresco at the beach. You can curate art, collect art, or just covet the art and artifacts among almost 90 galleries and antique shops, and you can buy anything from t-shirts to Tiffany. Even those who travel the world are unlikely to encounter another place that has so much to offer in one location.

I am Italian and I was there last year in passing, I knew it was the city where Clint Eastwood lives. In July the temperature was autumn, the super exclusive shops and the houses look like those in fairytale books. I would stay there again.

Beautiful place. It was fairly affordable in the 1980s when you could buy a beautiful 3-bedroom 2-bath 1930s home 4 blocks from the beach for under 200k. Friends of ours bought their 1600 sq foot vacation house in Carmel By-The-Sea in 1985 for 150k. It's now worth 3 million dollars!

I hate that I left that entire area waayy too early. Live in San Fran when it was very affordable in the 90's, then San Diego. Wish I would have stayed and bought a home. Looking forward I live in Tampa, Fl and my home has appreciated by 80k in 3 years!

It's a wonderful community but be prepared to pay over a million for a small 2-bedroom 1-bath cottage on a small lot if close to downtown Carmel. The weather also isn't for everyone as it can be cold (60s) and overcast even in summer.

Yes, it is very expensive. Expect to pay over a million for a small 2-bedroom 1-bath cottage on a small lot if close to downtown Carmel. If you want an ocean view and a little more sq footage expect to pay over 2-million to start.

Carmel is beautiful, but one major issue I had during our 2 visits over the past few years was I could only find one unisex public bathroom. It's too far to walk down to the beach to the public bathrooms there. To walk, shop, do wine tastings as we did, to interrupt the fun to have to find a bathroom, to realize there is only one public bathroom and that you are the third person in the quaint garden area waiting on that door to open IS a detraction from the lovely Carmel Village.

John Kenney was attacked here by his neighbors Mel and Elizabeth Grimes. He was later wrongfully convicted. Governor should look in to this case.

Meh, too many tall trees for me. Makes the community look dark and depressing. Beach is nice but I'll pass on Carmel's $6 million dollar homes. Will gladly take a $700K brand new house with a view of a lake instead.
