    Informative and helpful.
IMHO, you might want to skip using a pressure washer (even a low household psi) on your engine bay and just thumb a garden hose.
I have an e28 M30 - a little bit older - but the M30 is a rock solid engine. Still, it’s always been suggested to cover the distributor and plugs - like all my life, any engine - and even run the engine whilst your are cleaning.
Nowadays, I stay away from harsh chemicals in Gunk due to the age of the plastic and rubber. Instead, Simple Green - Heavy Duty or Industrial - works well and you don’t have to worry about harsh toxins stuck to your plates catching fire or the driveway runoff killing your dogs.
… But it is Citrus based and needs to be rinsed well on aluminum or it will turn it black.
Then, I’d skip the brass and just get busy with Brake Cleaner and steel wire brushes using a drill/rotary oscillator to polish the metal. Use Mass Air Flow cleaner on the inside to remove carbon. Chemicals might mess it up but the aluminum on the M30 can more than take a physical scrub. Ive bought new parts only to send them back because of quality differences. Just polish the old but original pieces and it will bling like factory new.
And then hit the outer cover with Brake or Engine Block clear coat. You’re there so you might as well.

Thanks for saying so, Spencer! I enjoy this style car, its just becoming so hard to find one in decent condition nowadays. If I had one, I'd definitely go for the wagon E34. Maybe one day!

Similar thing on mine, completely loose one side and finger tight on the other. Thankfully didn’t fully back out. Well worth checking

If you make a painting mistake, aircraft painter stripper should remove most of the paint. BE CAREFUL! It is extremely caustic.
