Barber Shop South Africa brings the story of the impoverished white middle class who decides to insulate itself from the outside world and settles in strict religious communities (Filadelfia Ark) in the countryside.

South Africa has known a turbulent history of occupation, discrimination against the black population. With the ANC in power and today in the post-Mandela era, the roles are reversed. We see a true ‘Black Economic Empowerment’, in which the black people are favoured in terms of housing and employment. The white middle class is slowly slipping away into poverty.
Adri (36) is the white female hairdresser of Filadelfia Ark, a community West of Pretoria. She cuts hair on a chair outside her bungalow. Her customers appreciate her gentle approach and visit her for an enjoyable talk. Filadelfia Ark has almost paradise like surroundings, with lakes, animals and an outdoor dining-place, but the community radiates a story of fear, exclusion, poverty and religion.
South Africa needs a real policy of transformation that provides opportunities for the whole country and reopens it to the world economic sphere. The BEE has become a source of instability for South Africa, has created an elite linked to a corrupt government that feeds the scourge of inequality and impedes the country's economic advancement.
We meet 6 populations in transition via the microcosm of the local barbershop. In every episode, a population finds itself on the verge of change and a barber plays his role. As opinion maker, as confessor, as story collector, as society barometer. Gradually, Barber Shop measures the state of our world, offering dialogue and human resilience as a hopeful perspective for the future.

Exactly. It is illegal to segregate people in South Africa first of all. If anything white people isolate and separate themselves from black people. Black people are far more welcoming than whites. We’ve lived with other races in those impoverished townships for many years with no problem. Now that preferential treatment is no longer the law of the land suddenly they feel discriminated against. No. This is what equality looks like. Far more black people in the country live in these circumstances and have been doing so for years. So please stop with this ridiculous nonsense.

    This is fascinating.
A few thoughts: I grew up around people like this, and they are definitely NOT middle class, and probably (mostly) do not come from from middle-class backgrounds. They are “ poor whites”, and they have always existed in SA, even under apartheid. There has always been a class of poor Afrikaners in SA, this is not a problem created after 1994, it has always existed. Of course this is no comfort to these people - poverty is poverty not matter what race you are.
Oom Dirk is doing something he feels called to do, and that it's good. Feeding fears and blaming blacks for their plight is toxuc, though. While you blame other people for your situation you can never solve them.
Oh, and joking about feeding some to crocodiles because they're black is just psychopathic...and it's all wrapped up in a religious sauce. This is feels like a weird cult to me, and it's vaguely creepy.

Surprisingly these folks still refer to blacks as kafirs(spelling) and of you listen to them you can truly see that they are unrepentant racists blaming blacks for their misfortunes. You can just tell that these people are in their situation because they have no skills and can't integrate because they were benefiting from apartheid. This video has honestly left me very torn: I feel pride in the resourcefulness and discipline of the Afrikaner volk - a resourcefulness that's brought our forefathers through many hard times before. This is both shocking and shameful. I'm a black South African, I stay in Pretoria, and have close friends of all races, even white Afrikaners. I definitely think mindset goes a long way in self-determination. These people, who are hopelessly racist, have given up their agency and chosen to isolate themselves as opposed to giving their part in a democratic nation. I have little sympathy for people who revel in a lifestyle built on oppression, violence, intimidation and conquest, and then moan when that "utopian" lifestyle is taken away. South Africa isnt short of problems, but a racist regime will and should never be the answer. I dont think this man is helping them in the slightest by confirming their biases and putting them in a self-sufficient community, where they will never learn the skills and temperament to live in a changed society. He seems to waiting for the inevitable fall of the current system? Well if it does, it definitely wont be in favour of a resurgence in apartheid lol. They tend to forget that people of all colors are living in peace right outside their fences.

The current system is more racially orientated than the previous regime. Cannot exist without racism. They haven't chosen to isolate themselves , they had no choice. Like admitting you have no sympathy for whites the feeling is vice versa.
Not if the current system falls but when it does, there will definitively be no more apartheid, because there won't be more than one race left. Either Or...

      @meloworx221 4 ปีที่แล้ว +21

@@deonfrederiknortje7629 you're right in saying that the current system is more racially oriented, but unlike apartheid, it is built on the principles of inclusiveness as opposed to segregation. 'Racial' is not equivalent to 'racist' , just by the way. No change will come without hardship unfortunately. And the balancing act that is now resultant from decades of oppression will inevitably leave some of the previously privileged feeling disenfranchised. The solution, however, is not to wallow in hatred and longing for a past that benefited them at the cost of others. The solution is to swallow their deep-seated racist pride and participate in the new order. Insomuch as you're not wrong in saying this system cannot exist without racism, I'd like to assert that it doesn't mean the system itself is racist : it's not run on the intent of ensuring the suffering of white people, and it gladly rewards those who try. That's why not every Afrikaner is living in poverty. I assume that you yourself are Afrikaans (and not being forced to live in a decrepit compound) that shouldn't go without acknowledgement and proof of there having been a choice for all white people. I simply cannot accept that "they had no choice". Frankly, that sounds like a lazy resignation more than anything else. I'd also like to correct your statement about me not having sympathy for white people, I never said that. What I said essentially was that I have no sympathy for people who maintain a counterproductive mindset of victimhood (in this case the Afrikaners on that compound) and those sentiments extend to any race or person. By the current system falling, are you referring to democracy or?

Take 12:13 for an example… Dirk is describing his “run in” with a criminal here. This criminal is Maleven who was interviewed by Louie Theroux (Google it) and he is quoting almost word for word what Maleven said in this interview from decades ago😅. This guy is a fraud.

The majority of these workers seem to have issues (drugs, psych), and in Atlanta, would most likely make a HONEST living as permanent temp workers. Crops may be seasonal as well, so to stay on long term, the workers peacock low dominance behavior. I just finished reading John Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath and it gave me a great deal of insight on these workers desperation and Uncle Dirk's character - he's a good guy. Even his racism is balanced and honest.

Oom Dirk is on a Mission. he benefits from free labor. Therefore he makes sure that he brainwashes these people to see no hope for a better life outside his farm. That is why he is turning them against the systems, against black people, against everybody else who is doing well outside his farm. With this racist mentality, they will never be accepted anywhere in the system, that way oom Dirk wins.

Shirley Tatha: yes a landlord so to speak, please learn about their culture before you make statements like that,a little lesson in the AFRIKANER BOERE culture it is seen as just straightforward respect to call somebody a uncle that are ten years or more older than yourself, i wonder Shirley, why nobody are putting up some videos of what the Majority of South Africans do in the (trust lands) as i call it (black/orania,s) culturally by the way, seems like no one no a thing, well i do, talk about a cult really! ! !

How do you claim to love the Lord but still hate your neighbor because of his skin color..... to be honest i think blacks are the most forgiving people, considering everything they were put through for so many years, they still came out at the other end of the tunnel and called a white man his brother, its sad though, how do you find it ok to hate a native in their own country.....
nonetheless a silver lining in this is that Uncle Dirk gets this people the rehabilitation they need, keep them off the streets and out of criminal activities.... side note** there's a little cultish signs on this farm
