Hearing the Voice of God vs Sola Scriptura w/Jim Osman

  • Popular evangelical Christianity teaches that God's children need to hear the voice of God to live the fulfilling life God calls His children to.
But is this true? Does Scripture teach that we need and should expect to hear from God?
Does this teaching help or hinder Christian women?
Let's talk about it with Pastor Jim Osman, author of the book "God Doesn't Whisper" who helps us see how the Hearing the Voice of God doctrine undermines Sola Scriptura, presents a weak God, and brings Christians to walk in doubt rather than faith.

Then there is the opposite belief. I grew up with people believing that if there is a lot of adversity, then you must be doing the will of God because satan is after you. They also believed that if you are a true christian then you should be under attack from satan all the time. And so they go around telling everyone how much spiritual warfare they are going through to show how spiritual the are and if you don't have spiritual warfare then you must not be a true christian. Maybe it was just my impression. Did anyone else see this in other Christians?

Yes I have heard of this as well I have always been a skeptic of the correlation people are making of having a lot of spiritual warfare to whether you are true Christian or not. Being we all have our flesh to die to, a sinful world to live in outside of demons spiritually attacking us so spiritual warfare is pretty much promised to every believer. It’s a strange way to boast about how good of a Christian you are loll😂

Yes, I did. I grew up inside a pentecostal denomination that taught this through and through. It is one of the false doctrines my mind needed to be reminded that it's NOT the truth, and the bible is the authority and its not found in there so its 100% false. So I now belong to a solid church and read God's word to renew my mind to know what is actually true and what is truly of the Lord. I believed a lot of lies from a lopsided pulpit, unfortunately. Praise to God our Father who knows how to reach us. This type of teaching is one of the vast that promote man (self) and demote God. It's crazy. People who say to the world they love the Bible but then they actually hate it when it really boils down to it. We can't love God but hate His Holy Word! Good comment. 👍

Hearing the voice of God is not contrary to Sola Scriptura. In fact, the Scriptura of Sola Scriptura is where I get the understanding that, if I am His sheep, I do hear His voice.

Christ calls his sheep to salvation. That is the teaching of John 10.
But if you mean he communicates personally to equip me for good works, you must explain to me how that is in line with 2 Tim 3:16-17.
It is clear that Scripture speaks and is all I need.

    • @busker153
      @busker153 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@melbatoast9281 Ok, perhaps it is on you to show me how it is inconsistent with the passage in Second Timothy.
It is clear from scripture that the first believers had no scriptures of their own, and no New Testament, as it had not been written yet. But, the truths contained in scripture were true before they were revealed, so, Jesus' sheep hearing His voice cannot, by Biblical revelation, be limited to the Biblical revelation.
That Jesus speaking to me does not make my words on par with scripture is also scriptural, as the words of Philip's daughters who prophesied did not speak anything to include in scripture. So, hearing from God does not imply any authority.
Which is fine, because there is no "authority" in His church. He clearly said, "It shall not be so among you." He calls me friend. Do you require leadership to engage in a friendship?

Have you ever read in the Old Testament where the prophets of My God mock the idols of the nations because, like your little god, they cannot speak.
The Bible has words for speaking and reading. They are not the same thing. You just do not hear His voice because you do not pray as you ought.
When you develop the prayer life you have been resisting since the day you got saved, then you will have something to say on this subject. Until then, find a place alone and begin praying.
Jesus' sheep hear His voice. Perhaps the problem is not that we do not hear His voice. Perhaps the problem is simply that you are not one of His sheep? Who is true, God or you?

I would be considered a cautious Continuationist, and I am not a Calvinist, but I thoroughly enjoyed this interview.
I have often experienced the crippling anxiety of wondering what God's will is for my life in this or that specific situation, but the Holy Spirit is very good in leading me to ask, " but what does God's Word have to say?"
And the more I am in His Word, the more peace I have and the more grounded I become.
The modern theology of trying to be led moment by moment outside of scripture sounds very dynamic and freeing, but
    ultimately it enslaves us.
The opposite is also true. It sounds very limiting to stick with the revealed Word of God, but ultimately it leads to freedom and peace when understood correctly.

Yes, the Lord God of the universe speaks. How does the Holy Spirit reveal the truth of scripture without speaking? He speaks to people throughout scripture. Millions of honest, respectable people have testified to this wonderful truth. The HS spoke to Cornelius and to Peter. He spoke to John in Revelation. He speaks through conviction/unction, revelation, dreams, visions, power, signs, wonders, and/or audible voice. Obviously, he will never contradict his own (properly translated and interpreted) written Word. How could someone say the Bible is sufficient yet not see that the same Bible shows clearly, in book after book, from Genesis to Revelation, that God speaks? He speaks all through the Bible. He speaks. He can talk. He's the Lord God. How arrogant for us to think we can talk , but God can't. And if you're not hearing his voice, then you're missing out. Again, just to ask him yourself. Ask him directly. Ask humbly.

God spoke to people in the bible through dreams and visions. And when God revealed himself to Moses it was through a still, small voice. And so I can see why people believe God will speak to them in that way too. I've never heard an audible voice, but I've had a strong impression/nudges to do something twice which I believe was God speaking to me. In a previous video I watched about Jim Osman, I didn't agree with him, but after hearing a fuller explanation, I find that I do. Before, He made it sound like we can just do what ever we want ( as long as it doesn't go against the word of God). We don't have to worry about doing God's will because he doesn't speak to us about it. He gave the example of his strong desire to go to Bible college. In the video he didn't attribute this desire to God leading him, but to me that sounds like God was leading him to go to Bible college. I believe if we are truly praying for God's will to be done that God will lead us to fulfill his will. We don't have to look for signs or strain to hear the still small voice, we can trust in God's sovereignty that he will lead us to do his will.

I think this is where some of the problems lie. We use the word "speak" which would involve "hearing"; it is an action done outside of ourselves, where we don't have to discern if someone is speaking. We don't say "I think you are speaking to me", or search for confirmations when your boss SPEAKS instructions to you.
Yes, the Spirit guides us. Absolutely! The Spirit's leading is not the same as God speaking. If God wants to speak to you, He will make it clear, and not leave you or I to have to discern if it is from Him. To do otherwise, would be to leave us in confusion, and God is not a God of confusion (1 Corin 14:33).
Moses literally HEARD God SPEAK and SAW God's power through a bush that was on fire but did not burn. It was clear that it was God. Nowhere do we see any of these prophets making use of ways to discern if inner impressions or even if "the sound of a low whisper" was from God. He was powerful and clear enough to leave no trace of doubt that it was Him.
Ps- even the passage in 1King 19 was an actual VOICE. The text states "he [God] SAID"; "SOUND of a low whisper"; "Elijah HEARD"; "there came a VOICE to him [Elijah] and SAID"; "the LORD SAID"; etc. None of these are even remotely described as inner impressions.

If God is alive than he speaks. He’s the same God. He hasn’t changed. (According to the Bible)
To deny that he’s alive and speaks is to deny a relationship with him.
Relationship is a two way street not a one way.
This is heart wretching to watch people deny the POWER OF HOLY SPIRIT. And scriptures that clearly state that he speaks!!! Just to fit their narrative

hmmm---let me use some critical thinking skills about this issue
First, God says He wants a personal relationship with us. We are to seek God's will for our lives and follow where that may lead. And God says He will always have His remnant.
God spoke to men and women long before the bible was ever written. heck bible stories are rife with God spoke to Moses, Abaraham, David, and many many others.
Jesus was God in the form of man and many recognized that from ancient jewish texts or actually hearing from God if they were prophets. . Jesus himself spoke to many many people. After Jesus, God continued to speak to Paul, the apostles and others.
All this before the bible was ever written.
All through history before the printing press was invented, any Christian only had access to God and His word by a personal relationship, perhaps some ancient Jewish texts and letters, IF he or she could read. Most people were illiterate in those days. and illiteracy continued to be a major factor up until modern times.
People in prison for their faith may not have access to a bible. so they are dependent on a prayer life and "hearing" from God that way.
So yes, people can hear from God apart from the bible.
final point, we all know of cults who have developed some really strange theology from what they say they read in the Bible .

Based on 1 Timothy 3:1-7 Jim doesn't need to hear God's voice to be a pastor/overseer/shepherd. In short, if Jim aspires to be a pastor and meets the biblical qualifications in these verses than God will cause it to happen.

@@wokefreeChristian funny, we read in the scripture that God called His servants into their callings. Hence the term “callings”. The last thing we need is people just deciding to become ministers

“Now that we know we don’t actually need it” referring to relationship with Jesus and hearing his voice….
Wow that’s pretty prideful to say!!
You are dismissing millions of peoples testimonies….
And take that “emotional-ism” to hell where it belongs!!! Stop ASSUMING that that’s the basis….god created our emotions we are not robots, ppl in the Bible had emotions, they were not robots, God considers these things. So it’s a part of it but not necessarily the basis of it. And if it is for some doesn’t mean it is for ALL!!!
This makes me so angry 😡 that this is being taught to people…so demonic in all levels

What is your belief? That we came into existence by one singular atom that appeared out of nowhere and evolved over billions of years? I encourage you to seek the truth before it’s too late, and that Truth is Jesus Christ, He is the only one who can save you and me. I don’t know how old you are but consider that you are very young in the grand scheme of things and we really don’t know anything at all. We all have Faith in something, you certainly have faith in something other than Jesus, but you still have faith in something. If you believe in Jesus and repent of your sins, you will go to heaven, but if you don’t eternal damnation awaits.

Imagine if your wife wrote you a book and you actually believed that because she wrote you that book that she would never speak to you again. Cessationism is so blatantly anti-biblical. i hope you see that some day. God speaks today - He is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

    • @melbatoast9281
      @melbatoast9281  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +22

God is not a human, who is limited by time and space, whose word becomes irrelevant with time. He can speak once, and it is powerful enough to CREATE, SUSTAIN, and accomplish what He wills by it. "So shall My word be that goeth forth out of My mouth: It shall not return unto Me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it" (Isa. 55:11).
Cessationism does not believe God "never speaks to you again". It believes God's written word as given in Scripture, has power, is eternal, and continually speaks to His people.
Your god's word might be compared to to a wife writing a book and never speaking to you again, but that is not the God of Scripture, whose word is eternal, has power, and is sufficient to equip us.
