Its amazing any of them are left. People are buying them and tearing them down to build modern houses one after another. That's why there is no big music scene up there any longer. Musicians can't afford it. That said, its still a great place to take a walk in.
@@RockessentialTim I'm wondering how these young musicians, at the time, could afford these houses? Was this area considered inexpensive, low rent at the time? OR, had they all hit it big, money wise, at this point? What's the history before they made it famous?
@@salgaldenco It was cheap to live there back in the day. There have always been a few posh estates up there--Houdini, Ginger Rodgers, Bela Lugosi, but there were a lot of funky wooden cottages too. These 4 videos of you dudes wandering around Laurel Canyon are magical. I'm from rural Ireland, never have or probably will be in Laurel Canyon so to see it like this is just phenomenal. I'm obsessed with the mysticism of the place, I study its backstory right through to when it was still Spanish. I listen to records that are connected to the place, I read books on the era, study its mapping. I dedicate part of my work to it regularly; I own a small indie record shop so I can happily spend large parts of my day obsessing over it with customers/friends and we do run special promotional albums runs from the area. Sure even Bojack Horseman lived there (!) Timetravel-wise if there was one place in time I could go to, it would be here in the late 60s. I've always wanted to see what it really looks like and you've totally captured it. Loved your Doors video too. Thank you, gra mhor.

All these years (70 of them) I never realized that the Byrds "I Wasn't Born to Follow" was penned by Goffin & King. Amazing. May have been written when Goffin was experimenting with mescaline and LSD (which could explain the psychedelic-type lyrics)
Hi Tim...I've enjoyed the tours...I just have one little critique...I know you've done it a few times, but if at all possible show photos of the artists in front of the houses or businesses you're showing if the photo exists...really drives the point home that they lived or worked there. Other than that...keep on making more walking tours...good stuff...thanks!
I haven't read all 252 comments, so someone else *may* have already said this, but Robert Frank, best known for his groudbreaking collections of photographs, "The Americans" (1958) directed Cocksucker Blues.
My folks moved us into the canyon in1973 when I was 15. We lived in the Hangover House and I watched David Carradine build his famous glass house next door...

@@RockessentialTim I could tell you stories...My dad was a record producer, Waylon Jennings, Jessie Colter, Don Ho and had worked at Apple for the Beatles so Ringo was around often. There is a wall in the downstairs bar that has signatures from silent film stars like Clara Bow and Charlie Chaplin, John Wayne as well as sixties stars like Hendrix, Neil Young, Ringo, Waylon, Dolly Parton...

I'm closing in on 70 and taking a walking (or riding) tour like this one has been on my bucket list my entire life. Is there any way possible to reach Tim or Randy to possibly take a tour???? If they don't do tours, does anyone know of someone else out there that does a tour specifically like this one of key houses/streets in Laurel Canyon? Just a dream I am trying to fulfill . . .
Arthur: Hey there and thanks for the inquiry about a tour. Unfortunately its not something I do but I will say that Laurel Canyon is not a very big place and it is possible to follow what we've done in a tour form without too much trouble. I'm not sure if someone does Laurel Tours but I would guess that they miight. Anyhow, good luck and good rocking to you my friend!
@@RockessentialTim Thanks so much for responding! I will check into possible tours. Will also take a good look at your videos to see if we could find our favorite spots on our own.
Again, thanks. I don't want to take up your time, so I guess my last question would be this: If you were me and wanted to find a few favorite spots in the canyon (for example homes that were occupied by Carole King, Jim Morrison, and a Stephen Stills, and so forth), basically how would you do it?
@@arthurlastra Well some of them are as easy as putting the name in google search and seeing what comes out. If you check out our video of 21 Jim Morrison spots, they're all in there. There are 2 parts to Laurel Canyon: Kirkwood Bowl, which is right at the base of The Country Store on Laurel Canyon and then if you go up Laurel Canyon Blvd another half mile and make a left on Lookout Mt. is the other ones like Joni Mitchell and the like. I would just suggest looking at the videos and if you see somewhere that you want to stop, write down the address. We did all our tours in a fairly linear fashion so it shouldn't be too hard to follow along with a map.
Every girl I ever met in the 70s had the Tapestry album. And also The Best Of Bread. Chick record or not, Tapestry is a great record. I loved “Harold & Maude”. Too bad people didn’t appreciate it when it came out. I love the Jaguar XKE hearse conversion in it. Where is that car now, I wonder.
Hi Hiking4life, did you remove that video about the five Frank Zappa homes in Hollywood/L.A.? It was(?) the really best covering of the Zappas homes in Laurel Canyon/L.A.!
@@RockessentialTim I see, thanks for telling. I don´t think Frank had been for a ´stiffer legislation´ in this matter. I among assumably quite a few others too appreciated that video, just fiy. :)
I am so sorry. I was wrong and you were right about David Crosby.....where he lived...I was thinking of Gary Crosby(Bings nephew).......who lived in the A frame house.....well, I guess you really can get confused when you are approaching 80......take care.
I'm afraid that you guys are mistaken about some details of the house rented by The Rolling Stones. They were in LA in January of '72 to do some final recording and the mixing of tracks that would become Exile on Main Street. Cocksucker Blues did not exist yet, because it was filmed by Robert Frank during the North American Tour later that summer. He had full control of its contents, The Stones did not make it, and were advised by their lawyers that some of the things depicted would make it difficult for them to obtain visas to return to the U.S. if the film was released, so they blocked it. It can be seen in its entirety on TH-cam, or at least that used to be the case. Ladies and Gentlemen The Rolling Stones, released in '74, is The Stones official concert release of the '72 tour, and shows the band at the height of their powers. It's well worth seeing and I returned to the theater to see it many times upon its release.
Hi Hiking, what do you know about the many musicians living in the Canyon who had family ties to power in DC i.e., Jim Morrison's dad being a Navy admiral during the Vietnam war?
Well, you can't research anything about Laurel Canyon without coming across Dave McGowan's book. God bless him but I'm just not a conspiracy kinda guy.
I heard that too and I have been looking everywhere for his former address. I heard it was at Glenn Frey's former home on Kirkwood. If you have any leads on that, let me know!
did you know the late singer Dan Fogelberg in laurel canyon on 8778 lookout mountain ave an cross from Henry drietz . away in Hollywood hills did lived late singer and actor David cassidy
Fascinating bit of music history! It was nice to see the house that Cass lived in before the famous one on Woodrow Wilson. I can’t help wondering what was her reaction when she came home to find the house had been cleaned - I think she might have felt a bit invaded and embarrassed - not a very nice thing for Michelle to do really!
@@RockessentialTim That would be great to see! Indeed I think the other one (7708 Woodrow Wilson) has a very interesting history - if the walls could talk they would have some amazing stories to tell :) Apparently Dan Akroyd was inspired to write Ghostbusters after he lived there and thought it was haunted by the ghost of Cass. I think he has a very active imagination!
Leslie GMN Yes, I read that article. It sounds like it was one of those _’I know, and I know you know that I know, so let’s say no more about it’_ things - I really can’t imagine she was terribly happy about it.
Weird I am halfway through the book. Changes the way you see these bands, not what we thought, in my opinion. This was cool seeing the homes and areas spoken about in the book. Strange place.
It is a super high risk area. Many times as I have driven over to Hollywood down Laurel Canyon Blvd I have seen at people smoking in their cars. (I let them know and they are usually cool about putting it out.) A wildfire destroyed John Mayall's Laurel Canyon house in I believe 1971. From down below on the Sunset Strip I personally watched at least 20 houses burn one after another up there in 1979,
I wish you could just list all the exact addresses in the comments for each house.. So we can Check them out on Google maps and one day do the same walking tour :) I'm also looking foe "Shared Google maps" that may have all these addresses already plugged in - anybody know where I can find that ?

This evokes the atmosphere and spirit of the 60's. I would love to time travel and meet Jim Morrisson!
I would love to time travel and hang out with Ray Manzarek!
@@RockessentialTim that short video of Ray walking in Venice is so rad! Cool to see him show what really made that area great for so many people before the whole shit house went up in flames! Ray got his kicks for sure!

Really great stuff, love your perspective and personalities... great stories. Why isn't this in syndication... soo good!
Thanks!
You are my favorite person to invite for a dinner when I am in LA next time.
No wonder these folks wrote such great music, being secluded like this.
Just bumped into you here. You should put a box set of all those movies together you talk about. I’d buy it. From an old Detroit hippie now living in Nashville.
Thanks, from an old Detroit rocker living in LA!
Another gem.
Thank you so much! I'm sincerely hoping to be able to do a little wandering around rural Ireland when all this Corona-19 mess is over. I am a hiker but my great pleasure in doing these videos is talking about music. Take care my friend.
@@RockessentialTim Tim, no problem buddy, you're welcome. I'll check out more of your videos... Plenty of down time at the moment. Been missing music so this is a nice new angle. And, obviously if and when you ever get to Ireland, let me know, you can check out our mountain ranges here in the North East (of the South part)... You've got a new friend here brother!

Hey man love the comment, I'm irish like you, love the whole Laurel canyon vibe as well, I'm 55 I'm hoping to get the money together to go and see it in person for my 60th birthday, God and health willing, peace
Hopefully we'll still be here!
Hi I'm from the UK and love your channel. Would love to visit Laurel C one day. You should do a video about Eden Ahbez and the nature boys. Oh man if only we had a time machine and go back. Keep up the good work.
Another great film by Hal Ashby is 'Being There,' starring Peter Sellers and Shirley McClain. BTW, the music was pretty good in that film too.
Who did the music in it, do you know?
I live in england but its on my bucket list to visit laurel canyon..71 now so better make it soon.😁
I hear ya!
I’ll be staying at Fritzi Ridgeway property on Lookout Mountain in November!
The laurel canyon Doc out now is fascinating, must watch if you like the 60s scene
Used to downhill skate Laurel as well as Coldwater back in the 70s. Valet parked cars @ parties on Lookout. Zappa was down by Donna Marta off Laurel. There and nude Topanga were my early memories. MK ULTRA. YEW!
Hey , Just stumbled across your site tonight .. Love It !! I think Marshall Chess had something to do with The Stones movie ... These are just all great episodes !! Thanks Jimmy ....
Would love to get to Chicago one day and explore Chess and Maxwell St and all that cool stuff.
Great upload dude. Thank you.
Thank you. I'ts really good to know that people are still interested in these great artists!

All these years (70 of them) I never realized that the Byrds "I Wasn't Born to Follow" was penned by Goffin & King. Amazing. May have been written when Goffin was experimenting with mescaline and LSD (which could explain the psychedelic-type lyrics)
I did not know that. Interesting to say the least!
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ I LIVED ON GRAND VIEW DRIVE! !AMAZING AND MAGICAL TIMES
Maybe the best street in all of Los Angeles!
Would love to have the address in all 4 parts. Thanks for the videos
I know, after much thought we kinda left em out on purpose. That said, they're easy enough to find if you follow the tour.
Check out my new Todd Rundgren video. I took your advice. Thanks.
Possible that 'Tim' is really Graham Nash?
Talk about how all those rock stars father's were all high ranking military, Morrison etc
I haven't read all 252 comments, so someone else *may* have already said this, but Robert Frank, best known for his groudbreaking collections of photographs, "The Americans" (1958) directed Cocksucker Blues.
It is a fact that bears repeating. Right on, thanks!
My folks moved us into the canyon in1973 when I was 15. We lived in the Hangover House and I watched David Carradine build his famous glass house next door...
That is really cool. Where is the Hangover House?
@@RockessentialTim it’s on Utica Dr up off Kirkwood. It was built by Tay Garnett in the 20’s & 30’s and was the home of Lash Larue in the 50’s and Buffalo Springfield in the 60’s...
@@kukukev No kidding? We went up there and filmed for our Laurel episode 3. it was so magical looking. I'm aware of some of the history, just a totally cool place. Would love to do an episode on it.
@@RockessentialTim I could tell you stories...My dad was a record producer, Waylon Jennings, Jessie Colter, Don Ho and had worked at Apple for the Beatles so Ringo was around often. He threw grand record release parties. John Wayne was trying to get into film and was smoozing Tay at the time and he helped build the 77 stone steps to the front door. There is a wall in the downstairs bar that has signatures from silent film stars like Clara Bow and Charlie Chaplin, John Wayne as well as sixties stars like Hendrix, Neil Young, Ringo, Waylon, Dolly Parton...
@@kukukev Did you know Randy, the friend of mine with me in the video?
currently staying on appian way...and these are my neighbors houses!
Hard to believe the traffic is so light in a place so famous and beautiful, and you can just walk around no gates really. Wish you would show the places Christina Applegate lived, now that would be fascinating
Again, sorry but if if you have a question I will try to answer it.
Must have been fucking paradise in the 60's
It still is---just a lot more expensive one.
I just saw Harold & Maude again and it really holds up well. It doesn't seem dated at all.
Hi Hiking4life, did you remove that video about the five Frank Zappa homes in Hollywood/L.A.?
It was(?) the really best covering of the Zappas homes in Laurel Canyon/L.A.!
Yes, I did. Someone in the Zappa camp had a real problem with it and thats the way it goes. It also happened with my Neil Young video.
@@RockessentialTim I see, thanks for telling. I don´t think Frank had been for a ´stiffer legislation´ in this matter. I among assumably quite a few others too appreciated that video, just fiy. :)
@@MrStrengelegen Thanks. I put a lot of effort into that video and your comment is appreciated.
I lived on lookout my 1966
No not that window - but on the 'front'. 💪❤
I'm sure you're right! Thanks!
I wish I could see where Phil Ochs lived. Just a curiosity. I think he lived in more than one place, but if I remember he lived in Topanga road.

Mick Fleetwood lived in Laurel Canyon according to Sound City movie.
I heard that too and I have been looking everywhere for his former address. I heard it was at Glenn Frey's former home on Kirkwood. If you have any leads on that, let me know!

I did not know that! I did know about David Cassidy though.
David Cassidy also had a house near where I live on the Studio City side of Laurel Canyon. I know the street but not the address.
I am sure it was amazing to be there back then, if you were of the right age and interests.
When the Covid lockdown is over here in Los Angeles we're gonna try to explore the other Mamma Cass house. Its got quite a bit of history.
Michelle told the story in an interview (in Vanity Fair, I believe), and says Cass never even mentioned the kitchen clean-up!
Leslie GMN Yes, I read that article. It sounds like it was one of those _’I know, and I know you know that I know, so let’s say no more about it’_ things - I really can’t imagine she was terribly happy about it.
Carole King and Gerry Goffin DID write “Chains,” recorded by the Beatles and others.
Thank you for verifying that! I wasn't sure and it slipped my mind to check. What a song!
Weird things in the canyon is the book if your interested in this topic
Dave McGowan. I haven't read the whole book but I've seen some excerpts. Heavy stuff. I need to read the whole thing, thanks!
Weird I am halfway through the book.
Changes the way you see these bands, not what we thought, in my opinion.
This was cool seeing the homes and areas spoken about in the book.
Strange place.
What are the chances of a California wild fire ripping through Laurel Canyon? Is it considered a high risk area?
It is a super high risk area. Many times as I have driven over to Hollywood down Laurel Canyon Blvd I have seen at people smoking in their cars. (I let them know and they are usually cool about putting it out.) A wildfire destroyed John Mayall's Laurel Canyon house in I believe 1971. From down below on the Sunset Strip I personally watched at least 20 houses burn one after another up there in 1979,
I wish you could just list all the exact addresses in the comments for each house..
So we can Check them out on Google maps and one day do the same walking tour :)
I'm also looking foe "Shared Google maps" that may have all these addresses already plugged in -
anybody know where I can find that ?
