Apoquel

  • Direct-to-consumer advertising finally reached the dog prescription arena suggesting pet owners should treat their itchy pets with Apoquel. Apoquel, initially FDA approved for canine atopic dermatitis and itch from allergic dermatitis, might not be appropriate for all pet dogs.
Unfortunately medical advertising heightens interest in treatments that may be inappropriate and not well suited to the underlying issue. As in humans, itching in dogs is not a specific disease; it is indicative of any of a large number of maladies. Apoquel is only appropriate in specific instances of sufficiently severe atopic or allergic dermatitis.
As with humans, the diagnosis of atopic dermatitis may not be straight forward. The guidelines for diagnosis remain somewhat nebulous and the range of disease severity varies considerably. Side effects include cancer with a fair number of pets being diagnosed with or suspected of developing cancer while on therapy. Many of these pets were euthanized.
Apoquel is a JAK inhibitor. It interferes with the body’s immune system and may lead to significant complications for some dogs. While the company advertises the safety of their product, it falls into the same category of drugs as Xeljanz, Rinvoq and Olumiant. These drugs target rheumatoid arthritis and are being investigated for a number of different diseases where an overactive immune system is at fault. The FDA mandates special Black Box Warnings regarding complications.
By the way, if you accidently touch you eyes before washing your hands after giving the medicine to your pet - the package insert suggest rinsing your eye for at least 15 minutes and seeking medical care. And if you accidently swallow the pill - call the doctor or poison control.

i had my dog on this for a month and had a bad feeling about it when he started to have some bad side effects. I started to do my own research. Please do your own research its out there and you can find it. A few days after stopping this medication he was eating again and acting like himself. This is just my opinion but I know we all love our furbabies.

If the FDA read all the reports about the lethal side effects, why did they approve this dangerous drug?

My dog’s allergies are seasonal and are the result of pollen. My vet had her on Apoquel which stopped working and then tried an injection of Cytopoint which did work. One injection was over $100 and he wanted to do it monthly. I turned that offer down. A holistic vet suggested 1/2 tsp of nettle leaves (I grind it into a powder) daily and honey. I give my dog a capsule twice a day of quercetin with bromelain. Since I have allergies and asthma I started using both for myself. I just started with the honey and nettle so I can’t say if it’s working but I will try anything other than pharmaceuticals on my dog

Doctor, I read somewhere that Apoquel is Vioxx or Celebrex renamed. Is this true? And if so, why give it to pets knowing it was very harmful for humans?

Many times dogs or cats get mites that u can’t see cause they burrow under the skin. U want to get rid of the mite that causes the itch!! Just to treat the itch is preposterous in that case!! Dogs get mange from mites eating their hair follicles!! Treat the mite, not the itch.

Yes, I took my itchy dog to vets, query field mites, was given Apoquil without an explanation as to what it was. No information leaflet in box so I googled it and now horrified it's an immune-suppressant! My dog is old, but with lots of benign lumps. I'm now worried it will have triggered a cancer.

Pesticide based control flea methods can cause rash, itching, skin disorders because of the toxicity of the insecticide running in the bloodstream of the dog.

Does your dog have allergies? Has your conventional veterinarian offered you a popular allergy drug called Apoquel®?
It’s touted as being “a fast-acting and safe treatment for the control of acute and chronic canine pruritus.”
Pruritus means itching. When your dog is itchy, you get desperate to make him feel more comfortable. Nobody wants to be itchy and constantly scratching.
Apoquel can ease your dog’s itching in as little as 4 to 24 hours. And dog owners do say it relieves their dogs’ itching.
Sounds like something you might want to try, right?
    Well, not so fast …
Before you expose your dog to the risks of this drug … you need to read on.
If your dog is currently on Apoquel … you will probably rethink your options by the end of this post.
Why? Well, let me share why I would never give my dog this allergy drug.
Apoquel demolishes essential parts of your dog’s internal disease-fighting systems.
Let me tell you more … so you can keep your dog itch-free and safe.
