Canker Sores

  • Canker sores remain problematic, poorly understood and recur frequently. Also know as recurrent aphthous stomatitis or recurrent aphthous ulcers, canker sores affect approximately 1 in 4 individuals. After peaking in incidence during childhood, canker sores tend to become less frequent with increasing age.
Regularly associated by the general public with recurrent herpes simplex, canker sores bear no relationship to the common cold sore. The underlying mechanism responsible for canker sores remains a mystery. Neither viral nor bacterial, canker sores may represent a reaction to local tissue injury in a genetically susceptible individual. Trauma may originate from irritation with a tooth brush or the sharp edges of crackers, potato chips or pretzels.
With pain disproportionate to their size, canker sores generally appear as small round to ovoid ulcers covered by whitish-gray debris and surrounded by a red halo. After the first several days the pain resolves with total healing of the canker sore in about 1 week.
Canker sores target the mucous membranes lining the inside of the cheek, undersurface of the tongue and the gutter between the lips and jawbone. Most canker sores remain less than four tenths of an inch in diameter and occur either singly or in groups of up to 10.
For the overwhelming majority of people experiencing canker sores, medical investigations are unnecessary and unhelpful. Treatment generally consists of ignoring the lesions or applying some over-the-counter protective topical adhesive paste. For some Orabase, Bendaryl elixir, viscous xylocaine or even a topically applied antacid suspension might provide relief. Vitamin supplements fail to reduce recurrences.

Wow, who knew canker sores could be so interesting to learn about! Thank you for explaining this topic. I had canker sores growing up all the time. I had braces all through my childhood due to cleft lip and palate. Wires rubbing my inner mouth caused so many that I got used to it. Oragel helps, as well as wax to cover the wires. I got through it, but it is quite interesting. Never thought too much of this. Thank you!

I had canker sores my entire life until I was diagnosed with Celiac disease at the age of 47. After quitting wheat, I never have any canker sores. If you suffer from these symptoms, consider having yourself tested for Celiac Disease. It is just a simple blood test that can rule it out. Most Medical doctors including gastroenterologists do not know anything about Celiac disease. So, you have to educate and advocate for yourself.

Chinese medicine has solved for canker sores. It is inflammation/ heat in the digestive system manifesting as ‘hot’ sores in the mouth.

I used to get them very frequently until on a tip I switched to toothpaste without SLS (often listed under an alias to hide it). Zero problems since. One of the versions of sensodyne has no SLS.

After getting my wisdom teeth removed, I developed a canker sore on my uvula about 3 days later. The pain is worse and more debilitating than anything related to the wisdom tooth extraction itself. I really hope this doesn't recur.

Food and herbal allergic reactions need to be added as causes, as well as those from toothpaste, gum and mouth wash or spray ingredients.

As a child growing up I would get recurrent cases of canker sores. As I grow older, I have notice, like Dr. Landow has said, that they have decreased over time. The last time I got a canker sore was a few months ago, and I haven't had any sense, and I hope it stays that way.

This is absolutely fantastic information. It is a serious problem in life. In my teen years I used to get average ulcers but since I quit smoking after the age of 23 I have had huge ones that last forever, and leave scars and are ten times more painful than ones I used to get.

I have been a vegetarian for 4 years and rarely have canker sores (3 times a year). Strange as it may sound, as soon as I savor about 300g of pork, I get canker sores. There might be something in the meat, probably hormones.
