    "It's just a flesh wound." Oh, man. First of all, such an epic climb/hike and a magnificent setting. You inspire us all with these vlogs and you certainly have the knowledge and experience to self-assess the situation. Glad it was all good and I think the idea to make another vid on the injury part will be quite helpful to myself and I'm sure plenty of others. Thanks for getting out there and sharing these hikes/climbs with all of us!! I have 3 weeks til I'm there in CO for a few days, so this is getting me stoked!!

      @KarlDeckerPresents  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, scalp wounds tend to be bleeders, it's quite alarming to have blood dripping down from an area you can't see! Thanks for the very kind words Dan, you guys are so supportive of the efforts going into these productions, all of your comments mean alot...I will be doing a short vid reviewing the first aid kit, and so forth, that may help someone at some point. Karl 👍👍

    We used to say “Life’s too short to climb bad rock”. Lots of big faces and summits are not worth the risk.
    But I love watching your videos. Stay safe young man.

      Yes Bruce! Rugged and absolutely spectacular are the San Juan Mtns, especially in the Ice Lakes area!! Thanks for your support 🙏, Karl.

    Wow, man, you're really cranking them out. I absolutely love that you assessed and decided to push through some adversity - the modern ethos of turning back at the first sign of adversity and celebrating that as some sort of moral superiority has gotten super old. You don't need to apologize on camera for self-assessing and deciding to push forward.
    Your adventures are great to watch while I've got my work open on the other screen! Incidentally, your editing and production keep getting better; loved the music in this one. Keep 'em coming!

      Yup! The San Juans are a very passionate, revered area for so many, we're going to get some more done so the channel has a solid foundation of adventures to experience and memories to jog! Thanks for the interesting comment, and stay tuned✔️. Karl 👍

    Pilot Knob is gnarly man! Last September, I did V4 (sketch!) and US Grant. Ice basin is an amazing place, and I am looking forward to more camping and summits in that area. Awesome vid!

    The entire summit of Golden Horn is one huge overhanging block of stone. The whole thing feels like it could fall into the abyss at any second.

    • @KarlDeckerPresents
      @KarlDeckerPresents  ปีที่แล้ว

      It is a stunning formation hanging out at 13,500, Amen to that!!

    My personal bucket list was to climb 50 highest San Juan peaks. I worked hard on Pilot Knob...maybe the same subpeak but that was more than enough. Good weather, early in the day, good climbing partners..nope...the whole idea of a bucket list is not to allow it to put you IN the bucket. My friends eventually summited but said the exposure and loose rock was extreme and they weren't going to come back, My vague idea (it was about 35 years ago) was that we went to the left (north) side of the ridge. I didn't summit Pilot Knob but it didn't kill me.
    Not be a nag I think your Crockadile Dundy hat is REALLY cool and helmits are so nerdy and uncooll but the head scars ain't cool either. Let alone an obituary.

    • @KarlDeckerPresents
      @KarlDeckerPresents  ปีที่แล้ว

      About the hat...I have blue eyes, a family history with Macular Degen, a sunburn in 20 minutes, lobsteresque. So those hats afford me UV and burn protection, along with the high dollar sunglasses. I wear helmets when I feel the risk warrants, and will continue to do so. Sure appreciate your comments! Karl

    • @huskerhank9896
      @huskerhank9896 ปีที่แล้ว

      Every step beyond the trail head is a matter of risk assesment. Happy trails and may your rocks remain well glued in place!

    I just recently diiscover your channel. I'm was a long time resident of Colorado and my favorite part of the state is the San Juans. There is no other place in the state that matches up. I don't do this kind of activity any more because I'm 78 and I no longer live in Colorado. I like your videos because they take me back to places I love without being there physically. Thanks, and get a helmet

      Great! Welcome aboard. Agree that the San Juans are so beautiful it's hard to describe... hopefully, the videos do the area fair justice, I sure try! Definitely going back this season. Any suggestions of specific peaks, trails, routes, etc. you want to see, let me know here and we'll see what we can do!! Karl 👍

    I hiked Vermillion Peak via ice lakes last September. This is a very beautiful area. I did not use gaiters or a helmet either. But it seems like a good idea. Glad you were okay after that rockfall incident. Your videos really capture what it was like to hike there, especially all that loose scree, miserable ascending and fun descending.

    • @KarlDeckerPresents
      @KarlDeckerPresents  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks brother really appreciate those words! The San Juans are unrivaled in CO aesthetically in my pretty extensive experience! Treacherous but incredible

    Karl, you are a Übermensch! I thought you’d pack it in after that rock 🪨 strike, but you pushed on! Glad you’re ok but the helmet 🪖 is always a good idea. Gaiters would be a good addition also. That said, awesome 😎 hike and views!

    • @KarlDeckerPresents
      @KarlDeckerPresents  ปีที่แล้ว

      Well Aamon, I defer to you on the first point LoL. Yes, I was in the San Juans and a helmet would have been the prudent move! No argument there... thanks again, Karl!!

    Glad you are ok! A helmet makes sense. The drone footage from on top of those peaks is epic. Which one were you flying? Appreciate what you do and can capture. Amazing. Us older guys did go up Black Bear and Porphyry Basin this week and encountered some rain which shut down the drone. Got a little footage, but not what I wanted. Another great KD Adventure!!! Thanks!😀👍

      Sorry Lynn, missed your reply LoL! Air 2 for the flying, thanks for the nice words, I'm absolutely fine 🙏. Hopefully the weather is beginning to normalize to an extent and you can get that bird getting some great footage for you 👍👍!! Thanks again, Karl

    Quote of the day: "The real trick to is to never ever get really tired" - Ahhh, so that's the secret! I will keep that in mind next time I crawl up to 13 thousand feet on a loose tallus that constantly slips from under my feet.
    In all seriousness, I have been to this region from the other side, from the Ice Lake trail, and that "normal" trail is quite the lungbuster. This trail is the hard core mode of that. I am in awe of the physical stamina demonstrated by this hike.

    That looked like a class 4/5 dihedral on Pilot Knob to reach your high point. Did you downclimb that?

    • @KarlDeckerPresents
      @KarlDeckerPresents  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I did and it was gnarly, that whole freestyle attempt on the knob was a bit over the top, the standard route was easier but still not really "easy. . ." Cheers!
