I had the indignity of being ordered off the Castle Hill estate....but it was about 60 years ago and I'll admit to sieving lead bullets out of the rifle range near the viaduct at the time! I thought I'd created a great little schoolboy business in lead smelting until the estate warden guy caught me. A Scotsman, complete with kilt and sporran, he said every bullet belonged to the Queen. Even at 12 years old, I knew damn well the Queen didn't want them as much as me, but I left swiftly on my bike and never returned.

Great video. I felt your pain in getting to Bremridge Tunnel after a long, difficult and unpleasant trek alongside the link road. This is definitely an occupational hazard for those of us who love to walk abandoned lines. However it’s great for us to be able see something that we wouldn’t otherwise be able to and it’s not as if you did any damage or remained there long so..conscience absolved!

Excellent content matey. Appreciate you literally going that ‘extra mile’ to get the tunnel vid. Always remember, trespass is a civil matter and not a criminal offence. All the land owners can do if you are spotted is ask you to leave which I’m sure you will be more than happy to oblige. You are very professional in your work and as long as you are careful, safe and discreet which we all know you already are then just keep going bud. I’m sure you will always make the right call!!!

Great video, there must be so much history of all kinds lying on private land unknown to anyone other than those who do a bit of research. All you can do is ask.... But as long as your intentions are not detrimental to the location or the estate owners I think it's better to ask for forgiveness than to ask for permission in my experience. Great photos, I do love a good tunnel video and this didn't disappoint. :-)

Very cool. A lot of the old railbed and infrastructure near where I am in the US is now developed or at least private. It makes me feel old (at 56) that I am an authority on where tracks, railbeds, and trails used to be. I wish we had today's cameras 40+years ago.

I came across an abandoned tunnel in Tasmania last week. On a slope with a stream running along the (narrow gauge) track. Three warning signs about the footing being loose, the track bed being unsafe and underfoot erosion. Nothing about the tunnel itself. I didn't go in as I did not have a torch and I did have three children with me. After watching your videos, I could recognise the signs of a tunnel. A very narrow valley filled with trees.

@@bostonrailfan2427 Paul snd Rebecca in my mind are professionals in what they do. They don't go around wrecking structures or writing graffiti or even (normally) trespass. Some of these old sites which are of historical value get bulldozed in the name of progress or safety and are lost forever. Someone that can photograph or video them for history is doing nothing wrong in my eyes. ( of course as long as it is safe to do so )

I used to live in South Molton and I don't think you have any issues whatsoever with going into the Castle Hill tunnel - indeed you've taken a bit of a trek to get to it! I've seen photos on Facebook of people walking their dogs through that tunnel and even an organised cross-country run going through it! I believe there's a slightly easier access from a lane to the south of the old railway, but it is more open so more likely to get seen, of course.

Remember Castle Hill tunnel and the Filleigh viaduct from my shooting days with the ATC. The range was below the viaduct which I have walked over both on the track and below where there was a one plank width walkway with handrail accessible from the track by a hatch and ladder. No fear in those days! Amazed that the road has utilised the viaduct. The trains were still running then but not on a Sunday which was our shooting day.

Castle Hill Tunnel is epic but I would honestly would had done the same after all that walking. One thing that happened to myself was back in 2019 with the Tyne and Wear Metro, they do not like people showing up at their metro system to take photos without permission, So I sent them a letter asking for permission, no reply back and ended up on the day when in Newcastle it was more let just do it without permission and nothing happened, sometimes doing the right thing does get you nowhere and I'm not happy with what I did as I wanted to do the right thing and get permission but sometimes you have to do what you have to do, honestly don't blame you for breaking your own rule, great video.

You guys are good enough to be on "History" or "Discovery" Channels I reckon. another great video. Tunnels are always good fun but I do find it interesting how much transport infrastructure was built really well so many years ago. It makes you think more and more about the Beeching and earlier cuts and transport policy in this country in general. As others have said. I would not worry too much about a tiny trespass (and also the points about right to roam if you respect where you are). especially when these places used to be part of a public transport network. Great stuff as usual! (Just a quick point about canals. Before wrought iron rails were thought of, the idea of floating heavy stuff around all over the place on man made rivers must have been very exciting!)

I remember walking through Castle Hill Tunnel when I was a kid in school when we were doing some sort of project on the old railway - we also visited South Molton station and somewhere I do have some photos from that visit, probably in a box hidden somewhere at my parent's house! (Sadly, the old station building there was demolished by the site owners several years ago).
Anyway - a couple of other facts about Bemridge / Castle Hill Tunnel. Firstly, I heard that when they were planning the North Devon Link Road, there were plans to use the tunnel as part of the road. This plan was quickly dismissed as the tunnel would be too narrow for a road, and thus if they did use it, it would either have to be widened or signalled.
The second thing I've heard, although I'm not entirely certain of its validity, is that there was actually a _second_ tunnel there, and it is this second tunnel that was the one that was used for the road, but instead of the tunnel being used, it was turned into the embankment we see today. Given the gradient of the road at this point, especially compared to the rest of the road/line between SM and Barnstaple I doubt this was exactly the case, as it would have meant that a relatively level tunnel was replaced with a tunnel with a gradient. In writing this, I wonder if perhaps what I had heard about the second tunnel was actually related to the road, and the idea of a new tunnel being bored for one direction of traffic, with the other direction using the existing tunnel.

Great video again guys, it's frustrating when you're so close to somewhere like that and you get blocked. It's a tricky thing, if you treat the place with respect and don't damage anything I can't see any problem but also I'd not like having dozens of traipsing around my garden. There is a tunnel on the old Lincoln to Louth line I'd like to look into. As for Venn Cross Station, the owners boundary may only go up to the portal. I just hope we don't get two way TH-cam, although Paul in one of Rebecca's corsets😏😃

My worst fear is not humans but having an accident in the middle of nowhere or guard dogs attacking me.I am not trying to encourage anyone,it’s all down to personal choice.

You're lucky the old Lord Fortescue didn't catch you ... he went around with a big shotgun and would've blown some vulnerable parts of you away hahaha 😝!! Just an idea for you if you contact the local film/TV dept from the local council you can usually get contact info though them and make it more official if your looking to gain access to private land. Just say your a looking for locations for a shoot. Love the videos great info and even some good camera work lol

Regarding the laws of trespass as I understand it ...... Trespass is not a criminal matter it is a civil matter. It would be the Landowner who is only qualified to ask you to leave and if you agree and leave immediately there should be no problem. The landowner could take you to court which is very unlikely unless you had done some serious damage. It only becomes a criminal matter if you refuse to leave private land when asked, then it is classed as "aggravated trespass" and the police could be interested. If you are spotted and questioned, a smile and a polite conversation goes a long way and you might learn some more facts about where you are. Thanks for the videos ....

I live near that Castle Hill Estate and if you ask me theres something up with that place. You pay to go in the gardens yet there are barely any to look at. You just wander the grounds & aren't allowed in the house. There's a big gold dome & that monument opposite on the other side of the hill which has the locals believing that's where hangings took place. I feel these tunnels were used for other reasons than trains unfortunately. Along with so many of the tunnels that are being found all over the world. Why are they all kept hidden from the public, it makes no sense?
Great video though by the way I shall be following from now on 👍🏻😁

It's tricky sometimes. Straight off the bat you come across those cows. Giving that part a miss was a smart move. You really roll the dice with large livestock. You might want to get yourself a hi viz vest for those occasions you find yourself near traffic. If you have one of the chunkier ones it can also be wrapped around the top of a barbed wire fence meaning all you have to do is slide over. As for private land that is always tricky. Estates are usually more concerned with poachers than ramblers but obviously the concern is being mistaken for the former. It was daytime so I think you were ok.
