when the common app tells you if you will be applying to the program, at what time lapse should you apply to both schools? do you apply at the same day?
hi! you apply to both schools separately according to the deadlines of both schools. So you can apply to Brown or RISD early decision then apply to the other school regular decision, or you can just apply to both schools regular decision. Remember that you have to submit the exact same BRDD essay with your Brown AND your RISD application (whenever you submit the application for each school). When filling out the Common App for each school, you need to indicate in the Application > Questions > Academics section that you intend on applying to the BRDD program. After you select yes, the BRDD essay blank will pop up-for Brown, it shows up right under the part you selected yes, for RISD, it shows up as a separate section you have to scroll down to see. Copy and paste the same BRDD essay in the section for each school's application, and you'll be good to go. hope that was helpful! please lemme know if you need me to clarify anything :)
@yellowceiling I have a couple more questions. I know it's possible to take courses in brown but have risd as tha main school, so it is not necessarily a dual program. I was told that in a scneraio, it's possible that you can actually apply to the dual program while attending risd or brown, and if accepted, then you'll manage to attend both schools. Can you fact check this? Also, When I apply to either risd or brown with the requirements of the dual program offer, does it affect my chances of getting in? Does it decrease the chance of me getting into risd if I apply for the dual program?
It is possible to cross-register at the other school as either a brown or a risd student (see cross registration details risdregistrar.wordpress.com/students/registration/risdbrown-cross-registration/). However, the number of classes you can take cross-registered and the options you have for those classes tend to be limited because the school will prioritize its own students. This is especially the case for Brown students cross registering at RISD, because RISD is already pretty small (and overenrolled) so it’s more difficult to accommodate non-RISD students. If you are satisfied taking a few classes at the other school instead of the whole concentration/major track, it’s not a bad idea to just be a student at one and cross register at the other. Brown students can take a maximum of 4 classes at RISD (college.brown.edu/learn-beyond-classroom/us-study/risd-cross-registration) and RISD students can take Brown courses in order to fulfill their degree requirements at RISD. You cannot apply for the BRDD program while enrolled at one of the two schools or transfer into the program from another school. However, if you are in the BRDD program, you can drop the program and just be a student at either Brown or RISD. (www.brown.edu/academics/brown-risd-dual-degree/prospective-students/faqs) Applying to the BRDD program affects your application in the sense that the admission boards of each school will have an additional piece of information about you in the form of your BRDD essay. Whether that extra info is beneficial or detrimental is completely up to what you submit. Hope that helps!
