Dave, get yourself some Tamiya Liquid Surface Primer. You can brush it on, it's self levelling, can be thinned, and when it's dry you can fine sand it. It's amazing stuff.
She looks much better now. I always have a hard time with metallic paints and protective coats too. She deserves her own base though, she is certainly display shelf quality👍
Thanks! I totally agree, she definitely needs a base. To be honest I was so over this build I didn't have the energy to do a base. I do have her on the shelf and we're becoming friends again so I may come back around and build her that base at some point! 😂
BETTER THEN IT WAS!!....DID A REPAINT ON SAME FIGURE AND HAD SAME TROUBLE AS YOU DID... BUT AT END!! IT STILL CAME OUT LOOKING BETTER THEN IT WAS!!. SO AWESOME WORK!!
Hello always enjoy Your builds. Thanks for the ideas and entertainment. I haven’t tried it. But I’ve seen several TH-camrs paint with gloss black, before coming back to paint with silver to make a chrome look.
After I made this I kinda did a rabbit hole on YT seeing how others do Chrome and I saw the same thing. I will definitely give it a try next time I attempt something like this!😃 Thanks so much!
Rust-Oleum Automotive High fill primer. Prime then sand it will fill in all kinds of gaps and dings sometimes you have to shoot it again and sand again. I think the build looks great just moving the arms made all the difference in the world like 300% better. Sweet build just found your chanel. Been watching alot and i have learn tons and had alot of fun smiles. Thanks brother
It may not had came out as you envisioned but it's yet quite an upgrade. Look, they say one is it's own most ruthless critic; you will forever look at it and will think of all the things that look wrong or could've looked better, but everyone around you will get marveled. From my part I admire that you went the extra mile in every way possible and didn't just gave up halfway. This is done, move on, to the next project. By the way; I did the exact same with all my 3.75 Rogue One Imperial troopers figures; they are all so gorgeous but look so silly just standing there, so I just sectioned their arms and reposed them so at least they could hold their weapons at an "attention" stance. Gave them some weathering and voila! they look great!.
Looks way better than before! A good primer coat should fill in any scratches from sanding and silvers generally look better over a black undercoat. In terms of silvers, Molotow (the graffiti brand) they do a chrome silver marker that is incredible. Guarantee you’ll never use another chrome product ever again. You can pour it in to an airbrush and it’s ready to go!
I think it looks great! I can understand how a great plan turns upside down really quickly. It has happened to me more times than I care to think about. The point is you pushed on and got it done. I think what you did really improved the model. Thanks for sharing this.
I think the silver came out well. The problem with reposing (in my experience) is that it involves more joint than you first think. Move an elbow and the wrist and shoulder moves etc.
Nice remodel. I find a nice black base coat makes silvers pop far more plus it gives u a nice first surface to even out the overall texture. Worst thing about most silver metallics are you have to leave them for 48hours to let it set so that any future weathering doesn’t upset the surface. That wait is painful but worth it. Love your videos mate.
The best metallic spray paint I've found when making prototypes was Dupli-Color automotive paint. They sell small cans and have a great selection of differnt metallics so you can experiment
I just wanted to say that when you said how "ugly" it looked in the process, that's what keeps me from doing things like this. I'm afraid of the ugly stage, but you make it look so easy & show us how you fixed the "ugly" & that gives me confidence in trying things out. I've had pieces to a little robot that I want to make, but the "ugly" part scares me. I think I'm going to pull them out today & see what's what. Thank you, sir. You are greatly appreciated. If you want to give that skull away, do it, it's really cool looking, but as for me, I'd much rather see what you can do with it. I'd like to see you make some kind of character just based on it. Is it a head? Is it some kind of decoration on a person's suit? Maybe it goes on a vehicle of some kind? I don't know, but I'd like to see how your mind works with it. As for it not being perfect, learning something is often a much better reward, not to mention you've taught me a few things and encouraged me as well. That said, the pose is much, much better. I almost kinda wished you'd have taken a Barbie head & showed us an unmasked Phasma, if the size was a close match. LOL Regardless, thanks for another cool video.
Jay, thanks so much... one of the main reasons for my channel is to encourage people to just try because you'll never know if you don't. Your kind words have made my day. Thanks
It does stand out better and now I can see why it was so long since the last video, dang there was a lot of sanding and redoing, but it does look better than it did before.
Krylon makes a Specialty High-Gloss Silver Mirror spray paint that I think would be perfect for this. Lowe's has it for $10. However, I think the real issue with the way the color looks on the suit is because her suit is actually chrome; which means it's incredibly smooth. Almost like a mirror. So you would need to do a lot of smoothing on that plastic to get the texture right, in order to get that same mirrored look if that's what you're going for.
Sometimes it's a struggle. I think it turned out ok but I also know it's never good enough as the creator 😂 That's what makes us try harder and keep going in the craft 👍
Too bad the heat gun didn't work great, different plastic maybe? Have you tried using any enamels? They stink and you need solvent to clean up after, but it might have covered better over the shiny chrome spray. I like AK Xtreme metal chrome paint too, if you can find it.
I have never had luck with enamel paint and my space is so small and it so cold in the winter I dont have good ventilation. I also have never really invested in good enamel paint so that could be a thing as well.😀
It's funny, I was just watching Adam Savage Tested and he did a clear coat over a Mandalorian helmet and it looked amazing. He even mentioned how surprised he was because he said it normally never works like that. I rolled the dice and lost. 😂😂😂
@@DRToysCreations Yeah I saw that video too. I’ve actually painted life-size captain Fasman in Mandalorian‘s cell this is in my arena. I believe Adam mentions later in that video why it worked and it’s because the helmet wasn’t smooth it actually had a texture so the clearcoat was filling in the texture which made it shiny which is an anomaly. On a smooth surface any clearcoat is going to doll chrome unless you know some trade secrets.. but great build! Love your channel.
Well, here are some hints that might be helpful: the sanding job was lousy because you did not "build up" your grit numbers...you do not start with a 1200, you go 120, 240, 400, 600, 1000.... each finer grits take away the sanding marks of it predecessor. The buffing wheel on the Dremel is meant to be used with a polishing compound that is applied to the felt. The way you used it it just generated a lot of heat - not something you want on plastic. Oh, and paint sticks so much better when you use a primer!
Man that was stressful, I think she looks way better. Great job Doc 👍
Thanks 👍
I’m so glad you didn’t trash it. It turned out fine! Thank you for sharing.

Sounds good, will have to look into that myself
Thanks for the tip!😀
Captain Phasma got an upgrade! Looks great 👍🏻
Cool, thanks

Yeak, it stinks when you put so much work into something and run into snags at the end. Just part of being a maker.😂
Much more depth to it after! Love the natural background with the snow!
Thanks so much! That snow makes it a real pain in the butt to spray paint! 😂😂😂
@@DRToysCreations you are welcome!!! I bet it was lots of cold fun lol 😆

On to the next project! 😀
very cool sorry it was frustrating to do
Sometimes it their easy sometimes their not! Keeps ya growing! 😀
yes cosplay Chris is awesome!! :) great job on this
Amazing video as always! Really enjoyed this, great work!
Glad you enjoyed it!

Great look to phasma
Thanks.

Exactly! I was gonna do the legs as well but once I did the arms I though "the legs look pretty good as is..." 😂

That's one of my huge problems... I'm so impatient! I hate waiting for paint to dry! 😂
I think she turned out great!
Thanks
Great job!
Thanks!
that came out wicked awesome .. would love that lil skull for my fridge
Cool, I'll see how to put together a little giveaway contest!
Your might try when using silver paint is to put gloss black as an undercoat.
I did try that the second time I painted the helmet but I didn't notice much difference🤔.
The best metallic spray paint I've found when making prototypes was Dupli-Color automotive paint. They sell small cans and have a great selection of differnt metallics so you can experiment
Automotive paint makes sense... I'll have to check it out! Thanks Jon.

Looks pretty cool I say. Well done!
I need to get me some of that sculpture putty.
Mili Putt works as well and you can find it at Hobby Lobby if you have one near you.
@DR Toys - Custom Toys Awesome, thanks for the info. Hobby Lobby it is.
Looks great
Thanks!
Great vid!!
Thanks!

😀 That and life just happens 😂
Thanks!
Lol! I never had a use for that buffing wheel either
😂
Looks great the paint job came out good how you may want to try some rub and buff. Just a suggestion. Have a great day
Great suggestion! I haven't ever tried Rub N Buff but something on my list to try. 😀
You might have been able to get some tubing for wiring harnesses from the hardware store to put between the arms?
Great idea! Thanks.

Alclad laquers makes a great chrome.
Awesome! Thanks for the great tip.
Somebody please tell this man about molotow chrome paint! Adam Savage uses that stuff and WOW
I have since seen Adam use Molotow. Got some and you are 💯 right, it’s amazing!!!😃
Sometimes it's a struggle. I think it turned out ok but I also know it's never good enough as the creator 😂
That's what makes us try harder and keep going in the craft 👍
So true! 😀
Thanks
I have the K2-SO you have on the background, any chance you're customizing that one as well, maybe a diferent color?.
No plans as of yet but you never know when inspiration will strike! 😂
Hey Dr.Toys! I love your videos and customs a ton. I wanted to know if you'd ever sell any customs? I'd be honored to buy one
I did sell some for the first time last year at D-Con in CA. It actually went way better than I thought it would.😀
If you're not happy just do a full crazy customization on it.
😂 Right! Battle scared allways does the trick! 😀👍
Too bad the heat gun didn't work great, different plastic maybe?

You might want to try Liquid Masking
Good idea. Thanks. 😀
ALSO USING BLACK AS A BASE COAT WILL HELP THE SILVER TOP COAT POP OUT MORE..
Thanks!
10x better
❤ Thanks!
battle damage
You can’t put clear over chrome it dulls it. You should have just not used it. Cool build though.

Thanks! I do start with 240 then like 600. I need to invest in more sandpaper. 😀 Great tips.
It's terrible how they treated this character in the sequel trilogy...she was weak af...
😂 Right!
