  • This week we take a look at the discrepancy it the `fit` of Piles that can be found when using varying cutting tools and varying Piles from different manufacturers and a method of fitting the Piles in a more satisfactory way, check out the videos we produced showing the basics of using the 2 main types of available nock/pile cutter before watching this one.

I think I’m going to try using “spent” brass as piles. Right now I’m looking at 38 Special brass. It weighs about 60 grains, I can trim the arrow shaft to fit the inside diameter and with the primer taken out, I’ve got a center hole at the front to fit various points into/onto the end.

      How did it go?

@@longbows haven’t made any yet, but I tried fitting one on a new shaft. It’ll work alright. I think some fast setting epoxy for bonding, and since 38 Special is a rimmed cartridge, I’ll grind off the rim.

And.... another “great idea”..... I’m going to find a local turkey farm to see if they’ll sell off turkey feathers on the cheap.

Perhaps, as a hobby project, you would like to demonstrate how you would make a taper tool for whatever pile you may have. I have fit a few hand made bodkins which required that I cast a positive of the hole in the bodkin to make a tool to fit the pile.
All of this a huge waste of time for 3 arrows for a friend, but it is a hobby after all....
I would imagine a professional would simply get it close with a rasp, and then burn the taper onto the shaft for a final fit. Or?

We use quite a few different types, its been a while since I make the video, they are probably pine shafts.

I use screw on piles these days. No need for glue at all.

I still use glue on the screw on piles.

Purely out of interest, do you have any opinions on parallel vs tapered piles?
