"This is a discussion video in which I croak from the back of my throat about a variety of topics from my first month living in England".
PROJECT your voice, you're not a Kardashian!

This young man is very prim and proper. He seems a lot younger than 20. Giving my age away, at his age, I had been working full time for 5 years. I know I'm wrong but I just don't trust people that don't drink (except for reformed alcoholics). What are they trying to hide? As to the smoking problem, I don't think it's unfair to say that the further north you go, the more smokers you will find - I'm not a smoker, but I can imagine from the things people up north have to put up with, having a fag might be essential. I'm a Londoner and I certainly realise how people in the north are not given the attention they deserve.

If you're struggling socially then join clubs or societies, there must be plenty of clubs organised by the uni. As for watching US college sports, if you have a TV then check the freesports channel. There are TV channels in the UK that just show US shows and prpular US shows can also be found on the major channels, like BBC, Channel4 and Channel5. You should have Freeview on your TV, or if not Satellite or cable. The UK isn't really interested in US college sports, in fact only American football seems to have much interest in the UK.

Good luck with the rest of your stay. I have often heard it said, and it certainly links with my own general experience, that it is easy to get to know people superficially in the USA, but that it is harder to develop a more in depth relationship, whereas in the UK it can be harder to get to know people but once you do then deeper friendships are more likely. I would be interested to know what you find. Have you tried joining any of the myriad of clubs which are available through the Students Union. They can be a good way of meeting people often in a relatively alcohol free setting?

Ermmm, you know that Final Paper you have? Well, that 'Free Time' you like so much is for you to be working on that paper. The UK higher education system put the responsibility firmly on the student to use their time to their best advantage in order to pass that Final. I'm concerned that you don't seem to have grasped this and are assuming this 'free time' is simply time off.

First of all welcome to the U.K. I hope you enjoy your time here. I’m not sure whether you said how long your stay will be, maybe I just missed it. Just a few thoughts. Firstly the weather. You have arrived at the worst possible time of year in terms of weather, dark, gloomy, depressing. Even we natives find it depressing. Things can only get better. Just wait until spring arrives and then get out into the countryside and things will look completely different. You’re in Nottingham so get to the Park District if you can which has stunning scenery and great hikes. Next smoking. The percentage of people who smoke has declined significantly in recent years. I think it’s about 18% of the population currently and much less amongst young people. It could be that some of the smokers you see standing around are actually students from mainland Europe where the prevalence of smoking is much higher. In U.K. higher education a lot more responsibility is placed on students to organise their own time and so that ‘free time’ you feel you have is actually meant for you to be doing your own reading, research and getting on with assignments. You don’t mention the grading system which I know is very different in the US. Anyway, you seem very positive so I’m sure you’ll make the most of your time here.

Cheers for the comment. I went to the Peak District just this past week and enjoyed it, the weather really isn't too much of a bother. I'll be honest I've been a bit concerned about not doing enough reading and research, so I'll work on doing that more! It's a bit difficult to adjust when you're first thrown into an entirely new education system without any guidance. That being said, as I am studying abroad this spring (about 4/5 more months) and taking minimal credits here, getting the highest grade possible on assessments isn't my #1 priority. As you mentioned, the grading systems are very different, so I'm not exactly sure how my grade will transfer over. In the U.S. getting grades of 95% or higher is what I'm used to, but I know in the U.K. grades higher than 90% are almost unheard of. Like you said, I'm just trying to stay positive and enjoy my time here!

Mark Zobel I’m assuming you’ve got a tutor. Talk to them if you need more guidance, it’s what they’re there for.

You make a video after only one month? And that is in a university? You haven't a clue about the UK

Do they do degrees in watching sports on telly? That's the impression I got.

Dude , 40 mins is too long, keep it shorter. The weather will be improving now its spring and the clocks change giving more daylight. The portions are smaller for food get used to it. go to a football game at |Nottingham Forest or Notts County , the worlds oldest pro club.
