Hey it's me, Mark. Thanks for checking out my channel!
1 Month in England - Discussion
This is a discussion video in which I talk about a variety of topics from my first month living in England, whether they are positive, negative, or neutral. All opinions are my own and based on my experiences, so this isn't the be-all-end-all of life in England.
Feel free to listen at faster than 1x speed, I wanted this to be a thorough discussion, hence the length!

Here's my journey from my dorm in Nottingham to Goodison Park (and back) for my first ever Everton match! Song is courtesy of NoCopyrightSounds: Oneeva - Platform 9
Omg this is dull
This fuckwit has enough brains to one day become president.
Do they do degrees in watching sports on telly? That's the impression I got.
If you could bottle this bloke, he'd be perfect for insomnia.
If you are an exchange student I cant help thinking that we got short changed.
Its shit living in England. If you want to get ripped - off at every point and everywhere, then come for a Holiday, but don`t make the mistake of living here. You`ll be charged thrice the cost as it costs anywhere else on the grounds that this is "Great Britain,"and we should be glad to live here. Its all a load of bollocks. In mainland Europe Council Services are forthcoming at ten times the speed, and 1/3 rd the price as here in England. Rather visit France, or even better Italy and Spain rather than this cold costly hole !
Change title to UK as England is just a part of the UK or great Britain or just Britain
Good luck with the rest of your stay. I have often heard it said, and it certainly links with my own general experience, that it is easy to get to know people superficially in the USA, but that it is harder to develop a more in depth relationship, whereas in the UK it can be harder to get to know people but once you do then deeper friendships are more likely. I would be interested to know what you find. Have you tried joining any of the myriad of clubs which are available through the Students Union. They can be a good way of meeting people often in a relatively alcohol free setting?
This young man is very prim and proper. He seems a lot younger than 20. Giving my age away, at his age, I had been working full time for 5 years. I know I'm wrong but I just don't trust people that don't drink (except for reformed alcoholics). What are they trying to hide? As to the smoking problem, I don't think it's unfair to say that the further north you go, the more smokers you will find - I'm not a smoker, but I can imagine from the things people up north have to put up with, having a fag might be essential. I'm a Londoner and I certainly realise how people in the north are not given the attention they deserve.
A woffeler!
Just watched your other film, save the train fare and go to a game closer to your room, Nottingham Forest, Notts County, Derby or Mansfield, even Stoke Aston Villa or Chesterfield. Did you like it ? You didn't say.
Sorry mate just seeing your comment now. Everton is the club I support, so I loved that experience and no train fare or travel could stop that. Been trying to get to a Nottingham Forest match, will definitely go to at least one before I leave in May.
ok, nice to have a change from someone studying in London
Dude , 40 mins is too long, keep it shorter. The weather will be improving now its spring and the clocks change giving more daylight. The portions are smaller for food get used to it. go to a football game at |Nottingham Forest or Notts County , the worlds oldest pro club.
If you're struggling socially then join clubs or societies, there must be plenty of clubs organised by the uni. As for watching US college sports, if you have a TV then check the freesports channel. There are TV channels in the UK that just show US shows and prpular US shows can also be found on the major channels, like BBC, Channel4 and Channel5. You should have Freeview on your TV, or if not Satellite or cable. The UK isn't really interested in US college sports, in fact only American football seems to have much interest in the UK.
Stopped watching after 10 minutes.
"This is a discussion video in which I croak from the back of my throat about a variety of topics from my first month living in England". PROJECT your voice, you're not a Kardashian!
Start saying football and not soccer, as it annoys a lot of people 😂
First of all welcome to the U.K. I hope you enjoy your time here. I’m not sure whether you said how long your stay will be, maybe I just missed it. Just a few thoughts. Firstly the weather. You have arrived at the worst possible time of year in terms of weather, dark, gloomy, depressing. Even we natives find it depressing. Things can only get better. Just wait until spring arrives and then get out into the countryside and things will look completely different. You’re in Nottingham so get to the Park District if you can which has stunning scenery and great hikes. Next smoking. The percentage of people who smoke has declined significantly in recent years. I think it’s about 18% of the population currently and much less amongst young people. It could be that some of the smokers you see standing around are actually students from mainland Europe where the prevalence of smoking is much higher. In U.K. higher education a lot more responsibility is placed on students to organise their own time and so that ‘free time’ you feel you have is actually meant for you to be doing your own reading, research and getting on with assignments. You don’t mention the grading system which I know is very different in the US. Anyway, you seem very positive so I’m sure you’ll make the most of your time here.
Cheers for the comment. I went to the Peak District just this past week and enjoyed it, the weather really isn't too much of a bother. I'll be honest I've been a bit concerned about not doing enough reading and research, so I'll work on doing that more! It's a bit difficult to adjust when you're first thrown into an entirely new education system without any guidance. That being said, as I am studying abroad this spring (about 4/5 more months) and taking minimal credits here, getting the highest grade possible on assessments isn't my #1 priority. As you mentioned, the grading systems are very different, so I'm not exactly sure how my grade will transfer over. In the U.S. getting grades of 95% or higher is what I'm used to, but I know in the U.K. grades higher than 90% are almost unheard of. Like you said, I'm just trying to stay positive and enjoy my time here!
Mark Zobel I’m assuming you’ve got a tutor. Talk to them if you need more guidance, it’s what they’re there for.
What sort of idiot deliberately chooses to study in a different country and then complains because things are different?
pro s you forgot, free health care and you probably wont die in a hail of gunfire
Molly our NHS is not free, we still pay for it, and being beaten to death in a violent attack, having a knife stuck in you, or ran over with a truck, or the sound of acid attacks sounds so much better dont it? I am English but at least in the USA people can own items for the purpose of self defence, the UK does not respect your natural right to self defence, because they dont allow anything for that purpose That is effective.
Wow, you really have a dirty mouth dont you? I will be surprised if nobody has ever washed that mouth out with soap... and no our NHS is not free, we pay for it with our taxes, America is less violent per capita then the UK, everyday assaults - acid attacks - less truck attacks - less stabbings - less, An Armed Society is a Polite Society, Defensive use of Self defence items = 500,000 to three million per year, that's a lot of lives saved, how many defensive use of self defence items has the UK had: 0 because the UK does not allow anything for the purpose of Self defence, which means countless British people have ended up as statistics when they otherwise could have lived! and so what? their criminals, America is safer for it, American cops dont mess around.. and their Justice system dont either.. and If you think Britain is some utopia then its you living in the fantasy land... Its soft, Its a nanny state, which has draconian laws about self defence, America is free, and that's something you can never take away from them.
You make a video after only one month? And that is in a university? You haven't a clue about the UK
Ermmm, you know that Final Paper you have? Well, that 'Free Time' you like so much is for you to be working on that paper. The UK higher education system put the responsibility firmly on the student to use their time to their best advantage in order to pass that Final. I'm concerned that you don't seem to have grasped this and are assuming this 'free time' is simply time off.
