      Margaret M I love my Hunters but they do not last forever. I’ve owned and worn mine everyday for 2 years. They are now cracked with holes where they bend at the ankle. They are so comfortable though. That’s why I wore the daily. Also beautiful.

      I agree, army green Wellingtons are a classic, since I was little, and probably before that too... I am now 55 😊
      I am on my fifth pair of wellingtons since I was in my early 20ies, they do NOT last forever, they dry out and crack, and I mostly wear mine in rain and muddy roads

      I'm afraid that is no longer true.... When they were made in the UK they were excellent. Now they are made in China the quality is awful. My fist pair lasted over 20 years, £5 from the factory shop in Dumfries, the last pair got taken back to the retailer after 4 moths having split. Save your money, don't buy Hunters.

      Hunter wellies wear out very quickly on pavement. I live one city block away from a large beach where the wellies are very useful, but walking that one block wore down the heal very quickly.

    My friend has the Chanel nude and black ballerines. They look lovely and get her a lot of compliments which is nice. I would not buy them personally though. They are extremely fragile. The leather is so delicate it gets dirty easily and within a month or two the pumps were showing wear and tear. If it rains my friend will wrap her Chanel ballerines in plastic and walk to the metro that way. Honestly owning a shoe that expensive and that fragile is anxiety inducing.
    I do agree that the shoe selection here is representative of iconic shoes. I would include the Gucci loafers too.

      One of the best things about being in a wheelchair is never having to worry about wear and tear on my shoes! 😂. Also, I can now wear heels again without having to worry about sore feet (or in my case badly hurting my back).
      Maybe that would make the more expensive shoes worth it in my case. They’ll certainly last a lot longer on me than they would most people.

    I bought a pair of Dr. Martens a few years ago when I was working a minimum wage retail job that kept me on my feet for 8 hours without a break. At the time of purchase I was barely able to justify the cost, but I quickly realized it was the best money I ever spent-- and I stand by that. I've worn them as a college instructor, I've worn them to protests, I've worn them to conferences, I've worn them hiking. If I could only wear one pair of shoes for the rest of my life, it would be those boots.

      I’m so sad that my pair of Cherry Docs was stolen when I was about 17. I’d had them for a few years at that point, and even though I’d worn them a lot, they barely showed any wear, and they were so comfortable! I remember being rather annoyed that I couldn’t wear them to school (uniforms).
      And now I’m in a wheelchair, I don’t think I could justify buying another pair. Not only are they very expensive now (and I’m poor), but I no longer need comfortable shoes, and I couldn’t put them on and tie them up myself anyway. Pity, because I love them so much.

      The only problem with them is that they are too much associated with neo-Nazism. But the product itself is absolutely good and worth the price. Unfortunately, I cannot buy them, because I do not want to send a message that I support neo-Nazis. I actually feel the opposite about them.

    • @NineTailedFate

      @@borzix1997 I live in the UK. I wear Docs, I see at least a few people wearing Docs on the street daily, and I've talked to people who wear/love Docs. Never has their historical link to nazis comes up, and never have I encountered anyone who linked them to Neo-nazis. But it might be a matter of where you live. Generally 'white supremacists/neo-nazis/etc' have been known to lace their Docs with white laces to symbolise their allegiance. I imagine if you stick to the standard black or yellow, you shouldn't have much of an issue.

      @@borzix1997 I think that might depend on your location. In Europe, they're associated with punks and metal heads, mostly. You see them at most shows with alternative music. I'm a leftist, very anti-nazi, metal head, and I wear them all the time. Same with my friends. It's true they had that association way back (in the 80s I think?), but luckily that is no longer true. Now a days, they are associated with alternative clothing styles and great music.

    • @katherinemorelle7115
      @katherinemorelle7115 5 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      Yes!!!! Thank you! They’re (extremely comfortable) pyjamas for your feet, not fashion wear! I loved my Uggs when I lived up on a mountain- I have feet that get extremely cold extremely easily (seriously, as soon at it gets below 22*, my feet get cold), and winters especially were very cold (cold for this thin blooded Queenslander at least- it got to -6* at my house in the winter).
      But with proper Uggs, I didn’t even need to wear any wool socks with them, they were warm enough on their own. And that’s what they’re for really, keeping your feet warm. I have heard people think it funny that the warmest slippers come from Australia, I think because plenty of people don’t think it even gets cold here. But it does- we have snowfields, and even in Queensland, we get snow occasionally (though given our usually dry winters, not often), and it can get below freezing if you’re at a high altitude.

    • @katherinemorelle7115
      @katherinemorelle7115 5 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Though apparently Ugg brand do also make winter boots made to wear outside in very cold temperatures. My Canadian friends say they’re great. Though unlike the original Uggs, they have proper soles and a different shape to the slipper type.

    I feel that Louboutins are rather basic in their design. That wouldn't necessarily be a problem, however, they seem to continuously release shoes with little creativity put in, just some new colours or studs. I feel that brands like Pucci, Chanel, and Manolo Blahnik offer more artistry. Louboutins are great for a simple, basic shoe that screams status, I wouldn't necessarily say they are as fashionably innovative as they seem to think they are though.

    For the recyclable Adidas it seems like a system should be set up where you pay a several hundred dollars flat payment (ex. $250 USD) but then if you grow out of them or they break you bring them back to be recycled and receive a new pair. I would pay a lot for a lifetime guarantee shoe like that.

    • @SeaUnicorn
      @SeaUnicorn 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      People who man the re-cycle facility need to get paid, so they price would need to be much higher than that. I think best of the both world is pay X amount flat and then 30-50% of that for re-cycling, that would motivate people to re-cycle them, save money to loyal customers and guarantee that people on the factory get paid.

    I'm Italian and we are very lucky because we have a huge tradition of shoe makers here. We can get lovely, well made and original shoes at a reasonable price tag. Of your list I have the converse, that I don't like because of their non existent support sole, a pair of dr. Martens (not the classic design though) which I unexpectedly love, and a pair of Grunland Ugg- look-alike very comfy (also a brand made in Italy - affordable, very well made). Of the shoes you mentioned I'd probably invest on Chanel ballerina flats (which are made in Italy, BTW) but I'm afraid they wouldn't be worth the expense. I can buy made in Italy ballerina flats for a quarter of their price 🤔. To your list I'd add espadrilles wedge shoes. They're comfy, romantic and feminine.

Very warm, very comfortable slippers (can attest as I get super cold feet and lived on a mountain where it got quite cold in the winter. I didn’t even need to wear socks with them, they were that warm. Whereas with my outside boots, I had to get a size up just so I could fit two pairs of thick wool socks on my feet).

    Why don't fashion-forward, elegant, sexy shoe styles incorporate a practical insole design that promotes foot health? The comfort category has a look that screams frumpy, earthy, and commonly in the US worn by older women. Is it hard to incorporate, let's say, an arch sport or heel cushion? The store Clarks is the most fashionable brand I have found, but they are still for an older demographic.

      Same as why not to make cars estructured as Lamborghinis without the expensive sport engine? It is not allowed... It would change status quo, many things are made to be able (or "appropriate") to be used only by young women, since, if you want anything to be desirable, just market it with beautiful young women being happy with it... Many try to go out of the box, but the dominance will be as always in ways to make the most money out of people

      bloocarty this has nothing to do with bad genes. There is a reason why men as well as people from tribes that do not wear shoes rarely have foot problems. Bunions and other painful conditions are mainly due to the constriction of the toes in tight shoes (men’s shoes are wider), a problem that is compounded when standing on the high heel because the weight of the body is unequally distributed across the foot, and not as it is meant to be distributed. I wear high heels, but let’s not pretend they are healthy, comfortable and good for the feet. They cause a multitude of problems.

      bloocarty I honestly do not see what the fact that men wore heels first has to do with anything (and believe me, as a shoe collector and lover I am well aware of of heels and their rise and fall in fashion or theatre - e.g., Ancient Greek “kothorni” or men in French court, or medieval use of high heels to avoid excrement on the streets). The problems associated with high heels wearing are not passed down to the next generation so it is irrelevant who wore them first. My point stands: Men and tribal people that do not wear shoes do not suffer from health related problems associated with high heeled shoes or tight ballerinas, such as bunions. And just because you do not experience pain now, I am afraid to tell you that this is not a guarantee for the future 🤷‍♀️ Just giving you the facts.

    Fantastic video!! 👠👢👟 The only thing that comes to mind that would be worthy to add to this list is the original and iconic Mary Jane, and yes that joke Carrie Bradshaw made about Manolo Blahnik Mary Jane's as an "urban shoe myth" 😂😄. As an Australian the whole thing about the American company Deckers owning the trademark in other regions and then suing Australian companies for using UGG and derivatives is actually heartbreaking and infuriating 😡. Justine did a decent job in researching this for the video, but of course the problems are very complex and far more nuanced than can be explained in a few minutes. In cases where certain protections are not possible; I am personally a big supporter for the term/naming/labelling of UGG to be completely regionally protected (e.g. like champagne can only come from Champagne and everywhere else it's sparkling wine), because counterfeiting is such a huge problem.

    I have Chanel, Ugg, Converse and Louboutin shoes. My rationale is that your body changes from size to size but your feet tend to stay the same so iconic shoes can be kept forever. Btw to anyone longing for a pair of Loub heels - they are crippling so prepare to display them as ornanents. My favourite comfortable shoes are Josef Siebel.

    I have one pair of Louboutin shoes that I purchased and almost never wear because they are horribly uncomfortable. I had special red rubber bottoms put on the part of the sole that touches the ground to protect the red lacquer because it scuffs off if you even look too hard at them lol. SO not worth the money honestly. I never really found Doc Martins all that comfortable TBH, they rub in the back like crazy when they are new, but they are iconic and were so popular when I was a teen in the 90's so I had them in a bunch of colors and styles, even the knee high kind (which are a nightmare to lace) and a special patterned pair that I got in Covant Gardens back in 1997. I guess I should tell my parents they better not throw them out, they are still sitting in my closet back at their house hahaha. This video was actually really interesting, I knew of all of them aside from the ADIDAS.

I'm shocked even some of the higher end retailers use cheap labour from unsafe factories abroad. I know you have mentioned a few brands that I regularly buy from such as h and m, marks and Spencer, zara etc. Use these places, but I wanted to know which companies don't? How can I find reasonable and readily available clothes that don't get manufactured at a cost to someone else? If you could do a video on what to look for and where to shop that would be great! Xx

    I love my Louboutins. Personally, I feel the wear adds character and safety to the shoe-- when the shiny painted leather sole wears off, they are less slippery. At that time, I usually get them resoled with a vibram rubber in red-- combined with patent leather, this could be pretty water resistant. The shoes I purchased are not "classic" and this makes them timeless in a way... like a piece of art. (I've had people stop me for a picture!) When purchased in the right size and shape for your feet, they are just as comfortable as any high heel-- the trick is to make sure the shoes have enough room for your toes, and that the pitch/ height works with your balance.
