This is old video from you, but thank you so much! I'm still beginner (1400) and french defense is so difficult, seems like there is no way I can win, but this one, when e takes d instead e4 to e5, it's already easier, and this is just a simple plan!

Thanks Mio. I have noticed when I play French as Black on the club level, younger players like to immediately exchange on move 3. They incorrectly assume it will be a boring easy game for White.

For some real fun chess try the Orthoschnapp gambit. e4 e6 c4 d5 cxd5 exd5 Qb3. Difficult for black to castle kingside and develop the dark bishop. Cheers guys.

Yes, this is very nice and attacking line. I remember I saw some Russian GM (some 20 years ago) to exchange pawns on move 3, then play Bf4, Qd2, 0-0-0, f3 and similar plan like you did vs 3...Nf6 🙂 Right now, can't remember his name, but those plans are very nice. Especially because French players would be out of their comfort zone, with position more resembling Sicilian!

I get every French player out of theory on move 2 with Qe2 followed by a Kings Indian structure. I found this via the lichess player database as a very practical approach. To my surprise, it is the best-scoring move even in the master's database despite c5 being considered a refutation. This can lead to dynamic positions even with double fianchetto which is usually the opposite of what a French player wants.

I tend concentrate more on the first 6 moves or so in these setups because the positions can become so random quickly. At my beginning level players tend to be more attack than position or defense early, myself included because beginners blunder under pressure. For instance, on move 4 or so in the first game what if black plays Ne4 instead of castling, before white can play f3? An exchange is forced due to the attack on the queen and what is white best move after? Or is this just a losing line for black?

Mio, do you think you could show some french gameplay from blacks point of view? Possibly the classical or winer? I'm in need of some good ideas of how to play those. Everyone shows whites point of view..but never ideas for black. And you're always so thorough. Sincerely a big fan :)
