    I'm Old Corps 1966 PI. Seems training was different then. The most memorable event concerned the slapping of a mosquito. The mosquito murderer was quickly identified and the mosquito, after a diligent search, was finally found and placed in a matchbox. Then, we took turns digging a 6 ft. X 6 ft. 6 ft. grave for the poor creature. Mind you, this was a red flag day in mid July. Finally, we placed the matchbox in this hole, being careful to orient the bug's head towards the East so it would be ready for Judgment Day. Only after the hole was filled did the drill instructor ask what was to him a very important question....was the mosquito male or female ?

      Trackrock haha, don't worry, that still happens. Lots of really dumb punishments still take place that make you hate life.

      Don't forget the drill Instructor yelling I don't slap you while your eating. Let him eat!😂 Sand flees are a different story for another day.

      Brad Foster good luck, man. Push through the hard times, remember why you joined, and never forget that the drill instructors can't stop time. Positive guy, thank you. About the CS House.....maybe in the mid-eighties it was different for the Army. We went is as a squad, I think 8 guys. We got asked questions while our masks were on, One by one, we had our masks ripped off and asked our DoB and Mom's Maiden name. Once answered, we hat mucous every where. We were told to run for the exit. It said "PUSH". Took a few seconds, but I found the handle and pulled the door open. Ran at full speed and got intimate with a Pine tree. I know I'm necro'ing this, but again..THANK YOU.

    This made me feel much better about going and it made me less nervous. I'm shipping out in 3 months after I graduate high school and all the recruiters at my Rss are making bootcamp sound terrible and it's so hard. I figured it was probably just a scare tactic but I wasn't sure. Great video sir, thank you!

    • @justamarineveteran9546
      @justamarineveteran9546  7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Realistically, yes, it does suck. There are parts that may be the hardest thing you've had to do, but it is all temporary, and you'll look back a couple months after it is gone and laugh about all of the stupid stuff. Trust me, you want the meanest drill instructors you can get at boot camp. You want your training to beat you into the ground. It may suck in the moment, but it makes you a better Marine in the long run. If you go on combat deployments, there will be times in your life that make boot camp look like a walk in the park.
      Before you go to boot camp, write down the #1 reason you feel the need to become a Marine. Hold onto that reason during the hard times of boot camp to help you get through. You definitely can make it through if you want it badly enough. Good luck! Hopefully in around 6 months I'll be able to congratulate you on being my brother.

      Severtson02' Many things can change in a short time, but once you're in, you're committed. The best advice is to put everything else aside once you're there, and focus on it. Your recruiters are hard on you because realistically what you go through now should be harder than what you will experience later during training. If you make it through, the world opens back up, and your closest comrades will have your back long after you've left the service.

    I never learned to swim. My recruiter said swim Qualifications isn't actual swimming, and they'd show me what to do to pass. My recruiter was right, it's just a way to to stay afloat with gear and clothes. Just do swim Qual exactly the way they show you and you'll pass.

    Hey. You might not respond to this but I just gotta ask; would you recommend I join during or after college? I’m still in college at the moment but thinking of joining. Also, what should I do to prepare? I know I have to be fit, but what kind of diet would you recommend?

    • @justamarineveteran9546
      @justamarineveteran9546  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's something that only you can decide; there are pros and cons of each, but if you finish college and have above a 3.25 (i think), you can be an officer, and you will have better pay and a more comfortable life. You could then use the gi bill for grad school or your kids. Joining now would let you get the rest of your undergrad for free and you would get in at a younger age which makes things a little easier.
      As far as preparing, honestly, I would say do a ton of running and body weight exercises like pull ups, push ups, squats, and sit ups. Don't try to bulk up since that will slow you down a little in boot camp. As far as foods go, avoid fad diets like keto and other "pop" diets. Just make sure you are eating lean protein, healthy carbs like sweet potatoes and brown rice, and eat plenty of veggies. Avoid soda and fast food and don't binge eat, and you will be fine if you work out 5-6 days a week. Is that what you were asking?

    I've recently been thinking of joining the Marines ALOT I'm 16(almost 17) junior in high school but I'll be graduating a semester early so I've been thinking of what I want to do after high school. I want to weld or work on cars, I was going to go to a trade school for cars and it has welding too but some Marines came to my school with 2 kids fresh out of boot camp and one was going to do the same thing I was wanting to do but for free and in less time. I started looking into the Marines and it's now something I think about more and more and it's not just because of the free college, I'd like to have something to be proud of and maybe make a difference, stuff like that. Is it normal to have a almost doubt or fear of joining?

    • @justamarineveteran9546
      @justamarineveteran9546  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Go into it with the mindset of not giving up no matter what, and you will be okay. Just don't let failure or quitting ever be an option. Boot camp is physically tough, but it's a lot more of a mind game than physical. Just follow directions and don't quit when it gets hard. It's really that simple. If you can do that, in about 3 months, I should be able to welcome you to the brotherhood. Even if you get hurt, 90% of the time you will still get to graduate; it might just be a few weeks later. In the scheme of life 3 months of crap is nothing.

    • @justamarineveteran9546
      @justamarineveteran9546  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      My honest thought is that you should probably ask your recruiter to delay your ship date. If you have a stress fracture that hasn't healed 100% by the time you ship out, you will likely make it worse, and you could permanently injure yourself. I know people who tried to push through stress fractures instead of letting them heal, and they ended up spreading and snapping the whole bone during a hike. Your recruiter won't like it possibly, but if you let it heal, you can still go to boot camp and become a Marine a few months later than planned. If you get separated from the Marine Corps during boot camp for failing to tell them about an injury and then getting hurt worse (they could hit you with fraudulent enlistment in that case), it will make it much harder to ever become a Marine.

    • @justamarineveteran9546
      @justamarineveteran9546  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Cole Rader honestly with the acog, it shouldn't be that bad. As long as your vision is good enough to enlist, you should be fine. With iron sights, I'd say you might have a problem, but the acog on the rifle, you can easily see the targets even at 500 yards

(he did work out but he should have a lot more than he did, PLUS, they moved up his date by 1 month and told him he had no choice... so that was a surprise.) It's not an unusual letter for recruits to send. His attitude should shift around second phase, and definitely by 3rd phase. It's a complete physical, emotional, and cultural shock when you get there, and most people aren't ready for that no matter how much they prepared. I'm pretty sure my first letter home said something about how I think I made a mistake.

    I wasn't tough enough to be marine, I joined the army
    On Sundays we had 10 mile runs,at the end was heart break hill, one long steep incline
    I am sprinter not long distance runner,I can walk for several hours at brisk pace. The run I was surprised I made it. Last week of basic had to wear boots ruck sack and n16 it was a killer

    • @jeffalan6339
      @jeffalan6339 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Seriously, you must be mentally tough, and elite to be Marine
      Whole army is no joke it is more mass and overwhelm , verses Marines few can take on many, Navy seals are one can handle many.
      Lke in Iraq a small unit with typical heavy armament few held up entirw t Iraqi division
      Army is force in #s overwhelm not surprise.
      The military of the US each had it's role.and purpose

    • @jeffalan6339
      @jeffalan6339 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am by no means degrading the US Army, from my relatives that were Marines told me they will be rough on you.
      I was only one of all in my family to join the Army, it was demanding, tough, the drill Sargent's make it so you don't depend on you, you are to depend on the others.
      They called "i got your back", one would do ,the others were in support, someone yell out or say cover him.
      As team one watched the back of the other.
      As a group one watched point, others flank another rear.
      All US forces are the best, Marines are normally land via air or ship, Army rail, air, columns, etc. Air Force can still in array of bombardment. Navy supply attack or support, fire from off shore.
      All makes the US the best.

    Boot Camp has changed dramatically since the summer of 1962. Ageless basic advice for those shipping for boot camp is do exactly what you're told to do, immediately and exactly the way you're told to do it. And at all times, keep your suck closed unless ordered to speak. Marine Corps boot camp is not a walk in the park but millions have done it before you, you can do it too.

  • @ruthlessofficial_

      @justamarineveteran9546  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly, that's kind of a hard question to answer because it depends completely on the boot camp platoon. 2 platoons in our company had the same guide the entire time because their parents were high ranking Marines. Some platoons seemed to change guides almost every week. I'd say your best bet is just to stand out by being the fastest and loudest at everything.
      If it doesn't happen, don't worry about it. No one will care that you were the guide in boot camp after you graduate boot camp. Other than the potential for getting promoted to E2, there's not a huge benefit to it

      It's really up to the battalion command what you guys wear. Some of it depends on weather too. If you graduate in summer, you're less likely to wear blues because they don't want people passing out

    In your opinion, what was the absolute worst part about boot camp?

    • @justamarineveteran9546
      @justamarineveteran9546  7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      We all got what the DI's called VGE, which was basically bad vomiting and diarrhea that lasted a few days. unfortunately, you don't really get a break from things, so everyone was puking on hikes, while doing drill, while cleaning, and basically everything else you do in boot camp. It was a disgusting and unpleasant week. Other than that, the worst stuff is just mental. Yes, boot camp is physically strenuous, but it is really just a mental game to break you down and build you back up as a Marine, so it messes with your head a lot.

      richard harrison I don't mean that boot camp wasn't hard; it was. What I mean is that there were much bigger things in my time as a Marine than boot camp. Being an engineer chief in Afghanistan was much more difficult and stressful than boot camp ever was
