Luciano sings this difficult aria very well, if not really as freely as an italian might. I love this performance over the falsetto/lieder method delivered later in his career.
Having studied Pavarotti extensively, this recording sounds like it isn't sped up correctly. Either that, or this is actually much older Pav than 1973. The key is lower and his tambour sounds too dark for a 1973 young Pavarotti. Just a thought :)
I listened to this recording again and I think you may be correct. This is definitely taken from the 1973 LA recital, but the timbre seems a bit lugubrious for the young Pavarotti (and it is a half tone lower than his typical performance key). I will have to go back and reexamine all the recordings from this recital and possibly repost them at the correct speed. Thank you for noticing this!
Oh wonderful! I was hoping you didn't take my comment the wrong way. I'm a die hard fan of Pavarotti and I just noticed, definitely lower key which isn't typical especially in that era of his career, but more importantly it doesn't sound quite like him. At that age Pavarotti has a youthful, bright vitality to his tambour. My favorite of his career honestly. Would love to hear it after its sped up! :) Thanks!
