@@janetuss6496 I'm both hip-hop head and metalhead. i listen to lots of Wu-Tang, Joyner, The LOX, Onyx, etc and also lots of The Devil Wears Prada, Lorna Shore, AILD, Fit for a King, etc. Oh, I'm a big BlackPink fan too, the only Kpop I listen to. I also recently got into listening to IU, she's phenomenal!

@@marlogwapo oh man, if you're a hiphop head, there's A LOT of BTS songs for you! Their hiphop-heavy work is not promoted in the mainstream unfortunately, but hiphop is actually their roots, they originally started as a hiphop group and that genre is one of their fortes. A lot of BTS songs sound very old-school, like reminiscent of 80s/90s/2000s hiphop and RnB songs. 2 of their rappers RM and Suga were actually well-known underground rappers prior to BTS. Their 3rd rapper J-Hope was a trained hiphop dancer prior to BTS. The 3 of them are particularly well-versed and knowledgeable in hiphop, especially old-school hiphop. The 3 of them are also the primary songwriters and producers for BTS - they have a heavy hand in a vast bulk of BTS songs, and at the very least, they write their own parts. RM has expressed that people who call themselves rappers should write their own lyrics (not all rappers in the kpop industry write their own lyrics). RM and Suga even write/produce for other artists outside of BTS and Suga has won an award for producing. RM and Suga also write solo songs for their own BTS vocalists.
I like Blackpink and IU a lot too 😊 I've been following korean music since the mid 2000s, so I would say I know quite a bit about it haha. BTS is a very special group, well-worth your perusal especially if you like hiphop! Blackpink girls are extremely top notch performers, I know a lot about them and have followed them since their debut. But unfortunately they are not trained songwriters and producers like the BTS rappers are. The ladies have written a few lyrics here and there, but generally speaking they do not make their own music. Their company also does not give them much creative and artistic freedom, unlike BTS's company. Blackpink songs are great pop songs, but they do not come close to the depth of artistry that BTS songs have. Which is unfortunate, because I think Blackpink is so talented but their artistic potential is very restricted. The artistry and creativity of BTS songs cover way more depth. I mean, they even got a song called 134340 that is about Pluto being demoted as a planet (they use it as a metaphor for other things of course). The discovery of the dwarf planet Eris is essentially what prompted the reclassification of Pluto, the lyrics mention Eris. BTS has also risked their careers a few times by making political critical songs (in Korea, artists aren't as free to do that as they would in America. They risk getting banned, blacklisted or otherwise targeted by people in power). Also BTS also does many more musical genres other than pop. They even got neo-soul songs.
I'll give you some recs for their hiphop heavy work below, but just wanna mention that BTS made an album called Map Of the Soul 7 based on the works of the famous psychiatrist Carl Jung, the founder of analytical psychology. Their song Black Swan is on that album, it's about an artist's fear of losing passion for their craft, or fear of not being able to pursue their craft one day, for one reason or another. The song was written based on a quote from a famous dancer: "a dancer dies twice, once when they stop dancing, and this first death is the more painful.” The film Black Swan with Natalie Portman also served as inspiration.
On that same album, the 3 rappers each have a solo rap song presenting different Jungian concepts: Persona by RM, Shadow by Suga, Ego by J-Hope.
Also, I feel like I should point out the difference between learning how to rap for songs, and being a rapper rapper with the background, and vast skills and knowledge of hiphop. I really love Jennie and Lisa, they are extremely talented, but the honest truth is that they are not at the level of rappers that the BTS rappers are at. If you throw Lisa and Jennie into a real underground rap battle, they wouldn't be able to do it. Prior to BTS, RM had already developed a reputation for demolishing underground rappers, and he was only 15/16 years old at the time. A lot of rappers in kpop receive their lyrics from songwriters and learn how to rap it very well for songs and for the style, but the hiphop skill and knowledge does not run in their blood and soul like it does for the BTS rappers. Because RM and Suga started out in the underground rap scene, there's a big difference between them and kpop rappers who were molded within the kpop industry. If you explore the hiphop-heavy work of BTS, you will be able to see the difference.
The BTS song Hip Hop Lover is them paying homage to hiphop, their lyrics reference a lot of the most influential MC rappers, DJs, and producers that shaped hiphop in the 80s and 90s, as well as some legendary rap albums too. If you're not well-versed in the golden age of hiphop, you might not be able to catch all their references. Here's a live performance:
      th-cam.com/video/a_3KCRAYAFQ/w-d-xo.html
And BTS also made their own rendition of Born Sinner by J. Cole, their version is called Born Singer. It's one of their rap-heavy songs. Here's a live performance:
      th-cam.com/video/8cUQ3lF3_O8/w-d-xo.html
Their 3 rappers also have their own sub-unit where they do rap songs together. Check out their Cyphers #1 - #4, they made those in response to the criticism and hate they were getting, particular from the underground rappers and hiphop community in korea. RM and Suga were particularly targeted because they had left the underground scene to join BTS. No music vids, but there's lyric vids (though heads up, lyric vids usually don't have the best translations, check the website doolsetbangtan if you want more accurate translations and explanations for wordplay). And here is a live performance where they performed shortened versions for the first 3 Cyphers and then did the entire 4th Cypher:
      th-cam.com/video/FT930XF1vzA/w-d-xo.html
Another great song from their 3 rappers is Outro: Tear. Here's a famous live performance of it, this is one of my favorite songs from BTS:
      th-cam.com/video/UDuaJGYe8EQ/w-d-xo.html
The rappers wrote Outro: Tear during a time a few years ago when BTS was going through a lot of hardships and they were considering disbanding. Since the guys have been working and living together since their teens, they are close like blood brothers and the thought of disbanding to them was literal heartbreak. So the rappers wrote this song for the other members.
But generally speaking, a lot of BTS lyrics that revolve around love are written so that they can be applied to many things depending on the listener, like platonic friendships, family relationships, romantic love, the relationship you have with yourself, the relationship you have with your craft, etc. Sometimes BTS songs about love are actually directed at their fans too.
The 3 rappers also each wrote/produced their own rap solo mixtapes. RM has 2 mixtapes. Suga has 2 mixtapes, he goes by his alter ego Agust D for his mixtape work. J-Hope has 1 mixtape. They spent millions of dollars to make their rap solo work and released all their songs for free - they have a true passion for music, especially rap, it's not about the money. I do suggest going in order of release for their mixtapes, but here are some suggestions to start you off:
      - Joke by RM
      - Monster by RM
      - Do You by RM
      (Here's a live performance of Monster: th-cam.com/video/F58BMdl0ezg/w-d-xo.html )
      - Agust D by Agust D
      - Daechwita by Agust D
      - The Last by Agust D
      - Daydream by J-Hope
      - Baseline by J-Hope (John Cena's fav J-Hope song)
      - Airplane by J-Hope
J-Hope's song 1 Verse samples the beat from El Chapo by The Game.
J-Hope also paid $2.7 million to the original artist to re-make the popular 2000s hiphop song Chicken Noodle Soup by Webstar and Young B, and released his version for free, as a gift to fans. He did it just to pay homage to his own hiphop dancing roots, as CNS was one of the first songs he danced to when he started learning as a kid.
Sorry for bombarding you with SO much info, I actually have many more BTS hiphop songs to recommend cause they got sooo many, but I think this is quite a lot already haha sorry! If you want more recs, feel free to ask though.
I do highly recommend you check out a music reaction channel Anthony Ray, he's a rapper from Belgium. Prior to doing reactions to BTS music, he mainly only did reactions to hardcore western rap music like NF, Tom, Harry Mack, Tech N9ne, etc (he later started a 2nd channel called Rap Catalog for those rap reactions). He was initially very skeptical of getting into BTS cause he had a lot of pre-conceived notions about them, but he was suggested to start with their rap heavy stuff and it won him over. His first BTS reaction was Daechwita by their rapper Agust D. I think that was like 9 months ago or so? I suggest starting from that video and watching his BTS reactions in chronological order. You can explore BTS with him, he's very intelligent and good at breakdowns, and he's very knowledgeable about hiphop/rap.

@@marlogwapo Ok really sorry for writing a 2nd reply, I forgot you mentioned being a metal-head too. BTS doesn't have any strictly metal songs, BUT RM has a rap song on his first mixtape called Throw Away, it's got a very metal-like instrumental. He once performed it at a hiphop music festival called All Force One where he was invited to be a headlining artist, here is the part where he performed Throw Away:
      th-cam.com/video/4vC3FN6ROcQ/w-d-xo.html
I'll link you the clip to RM's whole All Force One hiphop performance that I just mentioned, he did a few rap songs from his own mixtape. And he had also brought Suga and J-Hope with him as guests, so the 3 of them also performed snippets of a few BTS songs. The set list is in the description, in case you wanna know what songs they performed:
      th-cam.com/video/ZzQ9Z0RAQ8Q/w-d-xo.html
Also, not sure if you like Limp Bizkit or not, but BTS once did a cool dance cover to Spaz by Krizz Kalico and Rollin' by Limp Bizkit: th-cam.com/video/S1Up-ZzHmuw/w-d-xo.html
Even if you don't like those songs, it's still a very cool dance performance imo haha.
Also, just wanna mention there's a BTS neo-soul song that is nearly universally liked, no matter what genre you prefer. Even hiphop heads who only like hardcore rap usually like this song. It's called Singularity, a solo song by their vocalist V. The primary songwriter is RM, he wrote it specifically with V in mind. And he based the lyrics off a book called The Singularity is Near, which is about A.I and the future of humans. Apparently it's a rather deep and complicated book haha. Here's the music vid:
      th-cam.com/video/p8npDG2ulKQ/w-d-xo.html
Also, BTS's dancing is top of the game, they could be a world-class professional dance crew if didn't make music. They are very versatile and can do many styles, but they are particularly good at hiphop style dancing. Here are some of their cool dance practice videos to their own songs:
      - Mic Drop Dance Practice: th-cam.com/video/eRkpkveBWyo/w-d-xo.html
      - Dionysus Dance Practice: th-cam.com/video/bccr1BwNI0Y/w-d-xo.html
      - Danger Dance Practice: th-cam.com/video/vJwHIpEogEY/w-d-xo.html
      - Baepsae Dance Practice: th-cam.com/video/gdUQ7GS7JXU/w-d-xo.html
      - Blood, Sweat and Tears Dance Practice: th-cam.com/video/v8z1TtlY1no/w-d-xo.html
      - Black Swan Dance Practice: th-cam.com/video/fTS1jAhWPbw/w-d-xo.html
      - Fire Dance Practice: th-cam.com/video/sWuYspuN6U8/w-d-xo.html
      - Their 3 best dancers also have their own sub-unit called 3J where they do harder choreography dances, mostly hiphop style. Here's a clip of them practicing and choreographing to songs from other artists: th-cam.com/video/ZVBciTIAUGs/w-d-xo.html
Here is 3J doing a short dance cover to Megan Thee Stallion's verse in their Butter remix:

What makes it particularly sad and annoying when some creative or person related to the music world slanders BTS for no reason, is the fact that the BTS are nothing but honest competitors, good sports, respectful to their influences, generous with their praise, and even constantly promote other artists. They carry themselves with humility and kindness. They treat their craft with love and professionalism. And they mind their own bussiness. But I guess some people can't control their envy.

I was skeptical at first but after listening to "Mic Drop" there was no way I could not admit that they are an insanely talented group regardless if I did not have a clue what they were saying through half of the song. The beat and their dance moves were off the charts. Just because they are not something I would listen to on a regular basis does not mean they are not insanely talented and deserve respect as musicians.

Joe was out of line. If you’ve heard the name BTS, you know darn well that it’s Kpop. It’s mentioned in every single English article about them. To call them Chinese (especially with the tone he used. To me it sounded like he knew they weren’t Chinese and was using Chinese as an insult, which is disgusting) and to say you dislike their music without any reason as to why (other than it probably being because they’re Korean artists from Korea who predominantly sing in Korean) is simply uncalled for. You don’t have to like BTS or their music. Thats perfectly fine. But to discredit or disregard them and their hard work is unnecessary.
I was a BTS fan (A Kpop fan since 2009) long before they blew up. Almost all of the members came from poverty and struggled like hell to make it. They were treated poorly in Korea at first (for years). Called nugu (nobodies) and mocked over their appearance, seemed to have been physically abused by their old staff (video of Taehyung being shoved and a staff almost punching Jungkook (who was like 15 or 16 years old at the time) and verbally threatening him), starved (Jin mentioned how they had practically no food), and were treated horribly by MCs on shows and so much more.
If you want to talk about underdogs who struggled to make it, look no further than BTS. They came from absolutely nothing into being the biggest boy group in the world (not speaking English or using English originally to boot, aside from Namjoon). You have to at least put some respect on that. Especially seeing how heavily involved they are in their music (not with their English releases which is understandable). They’ve worked their a**es off and have earned their success. Nothing was handed to them.
I’ve never even heard of this Joe guy but after doing some digging it seems that all he does is pick fights with those more talented and successful than he is. Laughable if you ask me. Makes sense he would go after BTS considering how popular they are right now.
Thank you so much for at least being open minded toward BTS and respectful. And thank you for standing up for them regarding this issue.

At least the people on the podcast with him told him straight up, "If you don't have a reason (for hating them), that's disgusting." There's definitely a reason; even the shittiest reason is still a reason. Admitting racism, admitting xenophobia, saying, "They look like girls", etc are all shitty reasons but they're still reasons... Like many have said, it's fine to have different tastes, but to say you hate someone/something, there's gotta be a reason behind that. If people who dislike BTS actually knows about the meaning behind their music and the things they do, I'm pretty sure most of them can at least commend them for their work and/or the effort they put behind it. Personally, I don't quite like hearing people say, "You can't say/do this because their fans will come after you." I mean, I get it, but I would rather hear someone's honest opinion over something fake, but the least we ask is for said opinion to have respectable choice of words.

      @pennybleta9721 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

@@44LillPuffin Exactly this. All these Eminem mentions about boybands are true for the western ones and most of kpop ones. BTS is the exception because they started from the bottom and received so much hate for it and still do. They still have medium 3 companies in SK trying to destroy them along with their groups psychotic fans and the western industry hates them as well because they are poc and succeeding without their approval as well. BTS are true artists and cannot really be described as a boyband more like a male group. And they are different from kpop groups and western ones because they begun as a hip hop group and still their discography covers every genre of music. Also they talk about sociopolitical issues, and their work is inspired by literature and other form of art as well as psychology. They have a lot in common with Eminem in fact. That's not including what the Male groups do besides bts... stray kids, Exo, etc. You never hear about it because the western media keeps that info on a hush basis, but they're realizing now kpop is where the money is and now you see it unfolding. The fact of the Matter is kpop is the emerging music genre and alot of cats are salty about it. Hey good music is good music in any language and it should be embraced not downed on.

It’s not possible to have beef with anybody if it doesn’t go both ways🤣 you will not find one tweet or video of any of the BTS members talking shît about somebody even if they had a reason to. That’s just not who they are. So for somebody old enough to be their dad coming out the woodworks and hating on them like that is crazy.

They dont get into drama but people always try to bring drama to them when all they do is mind their business.

Hilarity ensues. Firstly, did not know this "joe" existed but ok. Secondly, he used that "china" thing knowingly; biggest insult to a Korean is to be called chinese or japanese. Thirdly, I'm assuming he didn't have a problem with Silk Sonic performing and winning three grammys. Well, guess what Anderson Paak is, yup, Korean. His mother is of part Korean heritage and born in South Korea. And guess what else? His wife is full Korean all the way from South Korea which makes his children more Korean than this never-been can handle. Lastly, Paak is a Korean last name and Anderson refers to himself not as "blasian" but "niggerean". and he's darn proud of it.

I have friends who won't try and listen to 'KPop' because they generalize all KPop to perhaps one song or performance that they didn't care for. This is like listening to one American pop or rock song, not liking it and just dismissing a whole genre. It is crazy.
